@GrannyRocks
I don't see connection between anger and (negative) criticism. That is, if I say that I don't see improvements in Genos2 (related to acknowledged shortcomings of Genos1), I'm not angry at all when I express my opinion. I just tell my point of view, which might be informative for others, or not... and then I move on.
Some say (or think) that negative criticism comes from envy people who can't afford Genos2... well, so be it -I'm still not angry  :)
Anyway, when I decide about my next keyboard I simply try to sum up all negatives and positives (that are important to me) and make a move.. or not :)

Greetings,
Bogdan

I have read all the comments in this thread, and I am amazed at many of which were written by individuals that have not seen, touched, smelled or have really considered purchasing a G2. They didn't buy their car this way, or their home, and I seriously doubt that they will buy a G2.

I really felt like deleting this thread, as it is totally meaningless and of absolutely no help to anyone that is thinking of purchasing a G2, but I will let it slide for now.

Sure would like to hear from someone that really has purchased a G2, and their assessment of this instrument from hands-on experience.

All the best,

Hi Bogdan, I was not pointing at you. You know in your heart what your frame of mind was — whether you meant to be helpful or not in your comments. In fact, there are many people on the forum who have tried to express their thoughts in an objective and helpful way, and I appreciate that. I spent a lot of time looking at reviews on the internet to help me make a decision, and I saw comments on demos and forums that were rageful, vitriolic, incredibly insulting. Or at least they seemed that way to me. I had to make my own decision about the Genos, but I felt even a little embarrassed to say that I liked it, although there were certainly others. But then social media can become a frenzy, can't it, and we can help stem that tide merely by trying to shift our focus to trying to help. Thanks for writing.

I have, as have others. I even started a topic. I love the sounds, and the piano is vastly improved, though not as full as I would like. I also bought a great speaker. To me, the biggest negative so far is the lack of seamless switch, because that gets in the way of my music. Also, I have yet to find a timpani. There are other issues, but they may be because I am ignorant of how to fix them, so I'll wait to comment on them. There are many styles that I find useless, and some that I have to edit heavily, but that's taste. Also, I am forced to be more creative, and that might be a good thing. There was one other thing, however, which is that I tried to edit a style, and I used the faders to remove voices, and even though I had them all down to zero, this one voice kept playing and I couldn't find it. I'm still wondering about that. Smile. There may be a lot more to say, but I'm too early in the process.

hello Beth,
I know it was not pointed at me (sorry if my post made it look that way) and I was actually also speaking in general. What I was trying to say was, that we shouldn't get too emotional when discussing keyboards. For example, I would anytime recommend the keyboard I have.. but at the same time I would also point out all the flaws/shortcoming that it has (and it's a lot of that) -because only that way potential buyer gets a whole picture.
Reviewers on internet/Youtube? Always read between the lines when you watch them -because 90% is advertising.

Btw. I admire your enthusiasm about keyboards  :)

Thanks, Bogdan. I DO LOVE MY PIANO. And I would like to take it out in the world, but it weighs 1103 pounds! But there is something delightful about playing the Genos and so many beautiful sounds. The action drives me nuts, of course. You look at a key and it falls, and then it hits bottom in one second and feels like a jackhammer attacking your shoulder, but I have to work with it. Right?? Did you get my responses to you about age and the Genos? It's nice to meet with you again at the forum.

I don't think you are being objective and instead, are seeing things through rose tinted glasses.

Yamaha has been using the same basic architecture in these arrangers for 25 years. If you can work a Geno's, you won't find any surprises on a PSR 8000 (ok except for the sampling, which we don't even have any more).. They weren't going to make any drastic changes this time either.

I have a G1, I would absolutely swap for a G2 if I could, but I can't. I think you underestimate though the number of people who can easily afford it and don't have to think too hard about always having the best.

The best dare thing that comes with the G2 is that new Midi to Style thing. But wait that was FREE ... Thank you Yamaha!!  You just made my music life soooo much easier.

Technology on these keyboards topped out years ago to the average listener (in my book). I say upgrade before your current keyboard breaks down on you. My PSR-2000 last for 12 years (I had it the last 10 years). My PSR-S950 is now 10 years old and I have seen nothing to make me want a newer keyboard. But it has been well used and I am ready to BUY the next SX(whatever) keyboard.

These plastic keyboards are not like my Fender Strat, that will last me a life time. I just figure 10 years is long enough to hang on to one of them.

JohnS (Ugawoga)

Well if you consider a Genos 1 having it six years you can safely say it is worth less than half price and £2000 is a fair trade.
Just consider the Part Ex and £3000 to pay it is a fantastic deal.
Once in that chain it is a no brainer to keep upgrading and common sense, especially when you are over 70.
In Drakes case a Strat is worth keeping for life!!

The  IdeaScale site was just full of what was written on here exact copies so for me no use at all. It was obvious that most of those requests would be a non starter. I am truly amazes at what some asked for and I would imagine Yamaha were to.

Hi Eileen

i asked for a Cap Columbe Coffee maker to be integrated into Genos 2.
yama'ha'ha! seemed to ignore my request. :)

I don't think you are being objective and instead, are seeing things through rose tinted glasses.

Many shops are still selling a Genos 1 new close to £3000.
I think even a billionaire would probably question well what can the £5000 version do more and I'm I going to use that?
The keyboards look almost exactly the same.

The fact people who have criticisms are straight away lumped as "well you just had unrealistic expectations or you are bitter or you probably can't afford the upgrade" is frankly awful.

I said it before here; had the Genos 2 at least been in white I probably would have owned it by now. Even if the rest had been exactly the same.
However the lack of some physical or operational change after 6 years has completely made me disinterested and unmotivated to continue with these arrangers for now.
This is totally not a financial matter for me. It is more about reflecting do I want to stick to what I was doing in 2017 in a very similar way or do something else.
And I'm not bitter either. I realise Tyros releases also did not change much between versions. But I never owned one of those and the timespan between releases was much less also.

It is what it is.

You have questioned the sense in changing to the Genos 2 on the basis of the extra cost over Genos 1, but then say if it was in white you'd probably have owned it by now.

l've read some crazy things, but buying a keyboard because it's white? And here's me thinking we bought keyboards because of how they sound 😎

Dutchman

I've got my Genos for exactly two years this month and I feel privileged to own such great instrument.
I was able to buy it due to an inheritance, otherwise I would never been able to afford it, I owned a psr3000 for 14 years until I got the Genos.

Now my financial position is better and I could afford to trade in my G1 for a G2 if I realy wanted to but not easily.
I'm still in doubts if the extra 3000euro I would have to pay weights up to what the G2 adds compared to the G1.
I was a bit sceptical at first but the G2 is a magnificent instrument, I'm happy for those who get it.

I'm eagerly reading the views of those who got the G2 on this forum and will make up my mind in due time.

There's no rush though, I still enjoy my G1 every day and I still learn new things too, it's still the same great keyboard as it was a week ago.
To criticize the G2 because you can't afford it is just childish, if you need to criticize then do that well founded in my opinion.

JohnS (Ugawoga)

The best you could do is cut your losses and go for Genos 2 whilst you have a choice.
Then you would be  a Flying Dutchman ;D

To be fair to the poster,  he did say that it was not totally a financial matter but anyway, it's his choice what he does with his own money.
I like the new Genos2 but I'm also denying myself the pleasure on the basis of 2 drawbacks.  I can afford it and had the money available years ago but it still has to fit my "wish list".

Aesthetics most certainly matter to many (probably most) buyers of almost any product.

It's why Nord sticks with recognisable red and the likes of Yamaha and Roland have alternated between Black, silver and indeed occasionally white.

Absolutely not crazy to expect or at least want something different after 6 years.

I sat behind a Genos 2 on Saturday, and it felt like I was sat behind someone else's Genos 1.
Not enough to keep me motivated and indeed it is not on my wish list as a result.
I'd sooner have a Montage M and/or dabble in multitrack DAW again.

A change in aesthetics definitely would have swayed me straight away due to the initial excitement and I would have lived with that decision.

It just seems the mutual respect is somewhat lost here when you don't want to continue with the next iteration of a Genos for whatever reasons you have.
To be made out to be crazy or financially not belonging here is disgusting.

I miss the friendly interactions with Jeff Hollande. He seemed to be a super enthusiastic but extremely respectful guy whatever you thought about any product.
I hope he is doing well. His account is no longer active I believe.

Last note:
After some thought and final decision making; I have now traded in my Genos 1 for an electronic drum kit.
I'm looking forward to trying something completely different for the next several years.

Best wishes to all the SX, Genos 1 & 2 & Pa5X fans. Happy music making.

I believe that I have figured out how I will be elated with the next upgrade:

1) I will not expect earth-shattering, mind-bending, knock-your-socks-off, blows-it-out-of-the-water features from the next upgrade, may it be three years or seven years!
2) I will not expect a lower price than its predecessor.
3) Using Chinese parts will be generally acceptable.
4) The trade-in price for the older model will be less than half what I paid for it unless I can sell it on eBay months before its next release.
5) I expect incremental improvements in sound quality and enhanced drums (Revo, Revelation, or whatever terminology is used.)

If all the above conditions are fulfilled, I will be a happy camper; if the upgrade surpasses and delivers more than the above, I will be elated.
So, a positive outlook will avoid negative comments, although they are acceptable as constructive criticism.

Life is short and getting shorter by the day, so I am planning to enjoy it to its fullest while I still can.
Negativity leads to stress, and stress has been linked to compromised cardiovascular status and increased coronary artery disease, so why would I deliberately increase stress, which is known to produce decremental effects?
So be happy, enjoy Genos(n) making music (believe me, it reduces stress!).

:)

Just to set the record straight Andrew, l never said you were crazy or didn't belong here financially, whatever that's supposed to mean.

If someone thinks there's no real difference to the sounds between Genos 1 and Genos 2 etc., it just doesn't makie sense why anyone would pay a considerable sum of money to change, just because it's white instead of black.

EileenL

I have Geno2 and believe me there is a great difference in sound quality and the new ambient drums are brilliant.

I hope the forum doesn't descend,  as some others have,  into an unfriendly bickering atmosphere due to members differing views.
I made 2 criticisms myself simply because I had been hoping / waiting for 2 specific changes which never happened.  We do all have different needs and wishes and that's natural in life.
I have not yet been lucky enough to hear a live Genos 2, but the quality of the sound on a 90 minute video by Leigh Wilbraham convinced me very quickly and I loved the spaciousness of it.
It really sounded in a new league and had it not been for 2 drawbacks,  I would have definitely ordered one.
It's a shame that everyone of us haven't got what they wanted but it's clear that most members have and I'm really pleased for them.
I shall enjoy reading the Genos 2 thread,  even though I'm still using G1 and keep abreast of what's happening and members new discoveries.
Hope you all have loads of fun with the new board and I hope it's not long before we see ordinary players on You tube rather than the big demonstrators who make a 30 quid Casio sound good.

EileenL

Sorry you did not get what you wanted but there is only so much that can be added to a keyboard to improve it and I think Yamaha chose to concentrate on what most people look for and that is sound quality and good styles. We certainly have that on Genos2.
