Any information about older Premium Packs availability for Genos 2?

I've created a lot of registrations on my Genos 1 depending on many Premium Packs (like Entertainer Pack, Latin Pack, etc). It would be a big turn off when I am not able to use these Premium Packs in the Genos 2.

Does anyone know if the older Premium Packs works on Genos 2? If not, does Yamaha have any plans to make these older Premium Packs available in Genos 2 format?

Unfortunately I cannot find any information about this subject.

Hi Robbie,

I don't have my Genos2 yet, so I can't test it myself yet. But I don't think protected packs (.cpf) for Genos(1) can be used on Genos2. Yamaha .cpf pack files are model specific, there are even separate .cpf versions for Tyros5-61 and Tyros5-76.

I was on site at the Genos2 presentation on November 16, 2023 at Thomann/Germany. The Yamaha demonstrators (Joachim Wolf and Roman Sterzik) said that all existing Genos(1) packs would be adapted for use with the Genos2. However, I have not yet been able to find out a date or schedule by which these packs should be available.

By the way, many older (and certain newer) expansion packs are in the non-protected .ppf format. These packs should be able to be used "as is" on Genos2.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your input. It's more information than I could find elsewhere. And it gives me hope when Yamaha demonstrators have confirmed some information about this subject.

As I can see, most of the packs are .cpf files. Although some protection has been removed from the packs when they were made available for free by Yamaha (there is no unique device ID check anymore), I suspect they will still be model specific and Genos 2 .cpf versions should be made available. But like the Tyros 5 to Genos 1 upgrade, I know Yamaha also took several months after the release before packs were converted to the new format. But at that time it was known. At this time Yamaha doesn't show any signs of planning converting the packs to the Genos 2 format.

I hope to pick a Genos 2 somewhere today or tomorrow so I can try out things. Of course I will share my experience about Premium Packs and Yamaha Expansion Manager for the Genos 2 as soon as I can.

I dont think its something they thought about much or an oversight. No doubt they will at some stage on adapting for the G2.

I understand that the new update for the YEM to 2100 will sort things.

Yeah, I've found a Genos 2 today available at a shop nearby, so I bought it  :D
After some playing first this afternoon, I started testing things with the Yamaha Expansion Manager v2.10 (on MacOS) and the Premium Packs this evening.

My conclusions and confirmations so far:

  • Genos 1 Premium Packs are visible in Yamaha Expansion Manager v2.10, but they cannot be selected when Genos 2 instrument is selected.
  • Genos Complete Pack for Genos 2 doesn't work correctly in Yamaha Expansion Manager v2.10. It can be added to the Yamaha Expansion Manager, but when saving the pack installer from the Yamaha Expansion Manager it generates an error when the Genos Complete Pack is selected (see attachment). This is a known issue at Yamaha and will be worked on. Workaround is not to install the pack via Yamaha Expansion Manager but directly install it on the Genos 2 by using the .cpi install file. But this will clear the existing Expansion Memory content and will not add itself to the Expansion Memory. So we have to be patient when Yamaha fixes this issue.
  • Custom Voice packs I've created before, saved as .ppf files (like collected PEMO sounds or other third party voices) can be successfully installed on the Genos 2 by using the Yamaha Expansion Manager v2.10.
  • No problems with the DX7 pack also

PS: The memory error has nothing to do with rights, memory space or something like that. I've checked it all. Writing is no problem when I deselect the Genos Complete Pack and write a pack installer file with the other packs to the same location.

Yes I have heard they are working on this pack so should be replaced soon.

As I understood it from Yamaha Support's reply quoted in another thread at this forum, it's the YEM software that has error and that they're working with a update / fix.
I had big trouble with v.2.10 downloaded from G1 site. Had to uninstall and reinstall v2.7. Then all was OK.

That is correct. It was my thread. I hope they will fix this issue soon.

I've received a message from Yamaha Support. Nice to see that they are very responsive to questions and remarks!

The old Premium Packs needs to be converted to Genos 2 specific versions. They are busy with converting and the packs are not online yet. A personal link was send to me by Yamaha to download the following converted Premium Packs for the Genos 2 already:

  • Alpen Pack
  • Ballroom Style Pack
  • Best of Europe Pack
  • Choir & Vocals Pack
  • Church & Xmas Pack (not working => import error in YEM)
  • CountryMusician Pack
  • Entertainer 2016 Pack
  • Euro & US Organ Pack
  • Vintage Keys Pack
  • Vintage Synth Pack

I'm pleased to see that I can make a big part of my registration working again as they use voices from these packs. Very hopeful other packs will come soon. So if you can't wait and like to have the packs already, I would advise contacting Yamaha Support.

Thanks Robbie
I shall wait until the converted packs are ready from Yamaha then download them, I will have enough to occupy myself making my way around the keyboard straight out of the box.
But it is a shame they could not get them up on their sight now..If they can send you a link it's probably just as quick putting it up on their website for everyone who will need them.

This is another thing I don't like about Yamaha! Why do you realease a new keyboard without already convert all packs you sell? This is a non-profesional thing, IMO.
I want to see somewhere in my life a new keyboard from Yamaha with already all content converted and ready to use when the keyboard is released! I hope I wull live to see that!

In all fairness to Yamaha;
1. The packs are free.
2. They found out the error and started working on a fix right away.
3. Yamaha have been receiving constant flak to release a new keyboard for the past 3-4 years. And no one wants to hear any reasons for a delay.
4. Even with all the criticism from a lot of very intelligent and capable people here who have a wealth of knowledge and experience in running huge corporations. Even then, I don't see them getting together and producing a viable alternative. Which is strange as it's so easy.   :)

Some people might notice a hint of sarcasm and a trace of condescension in this post.
In my defense I really don't care.

You should not have a problem with these John as they are not protected and most third party packs load OK.

Has anyone successfully loaded Easysounds ??

Hi John,

If you bought the packs directly from Easy Sounds, they are in non-protected .ppf format. Then you can also use the packs on Genos2.

However, if you purchased the Easy Sound packs from Yamaha Musicsoft, they are probably protected .cpf format and can only be used on exactly one instrument, i.e. your Genos(1).

Chris

If the easy sounds don't work you will have to get in touch with them to see if they have a solution and are going to convert them.

Why not converted them before you bring the new model on the market

They could have had everything ready a long time ago. I think they just released the Genos 2 for the holidays. What happens now, many complaints about YEM not working and Expansion Packs not working. The people who upgrade from the Genos/PSR to the Genos 2 are the most loyal musicians of the Yamaha Arranger Workstatrion category. You have to be careful with this and ensure that all software works properly and has been tested, and all packs work properly and have been converted.

A future update of Yamaha Expansion Manager (YEM) will only solve the problem with using the "Genos Complete Pack" for Genos 2 in YEM.

It will not solve/add the possibility of loading older Genos Premium Packs for the Genos 2. This just needs Premium Packs in Genos 2 format. For this to work, we just have to wait for the converted Premium Packs by Yamaha.

I think it is more problems that has to be solved.
YEM v2.10 is downloadable at G1 site as well, and it seemed to work well for a while, but stood spinning at same level at end of progressbar for more than 1.5 hour. !!
Uninstalled and reinstalled, same thing happened. Then uninstalled and installed v2.7 again, and everything worked well. 45 minutes to fulfill the task.
I also found v2.9 slower when when that version came out, and went back to v2.7. At least it works well for me at G1.
However,
older versions than 2.10 is not compatible with Genos2, so to try older versions will not work.

Btw, regarding G1 Expansion Packs.
Have any of you that took backup of G1's HD tried to load the styles stright from the Expansion folder in backup? It's there, prs files, rgt files, vce files, sfx files and more, so maybe G2 will load and play those?
Try put the old 'Expansion' folder to USB stick and load the styles. It may work and sound reasonable well just as many other 'older' stuff.  :)

Don't the styles in the expansion packs usually use the voices from that pack? Might not sound that great.

Hi Chris,

Lucky as i have the FM expansion,  which probablly all be in the DX pack anyway and live organ and Phat analogue all ppf. Thanks for the tip.

I got my Genos today and going through the getting it tuned in again and found that Epiano's never put all the promised registration banks in, They had the box opened and only put my name in the keyboard so i will have to ask for them on a usb.

All the best
John

Yes they do, but it could be worth a try to see how it works and sounds as an experiment while wait for the udated ones.  ;)
I don't have G2 yet, so I cannot check it out. Every pack installed at G1 is to find in the HD / Expansion folder / 'Packnames' folders.
The styles often use 'onboard' sounds as well as those added from the packs, and it's possible to swap to soundsfound at G2.
