HI!

I'm sure everyone has a massive amount of styles on their computers - I do!

But, what is the best way to preview them on a pc? Which is the best software to use?

Thanks in advance...  :)

Hi Alan

There maybe programs out there to preview styles on a PC, but none of them will tell you what they sound like.  I still think that the KB is the best method, it's quick and easy. One other benefit is that once find a gem you can easily move or copy it to your normal filing structure.

Current KB:  YAMAHA GENOS 2

Styles are midi formats so have no sound. When you play the on the keyboard they are accessing the great voices of the keyboard. Those don't exist on the pc so they can never sound good or properly balanced. Like the post above, I would not recommend it. Transfer the files to usb then listen to them on the keyboard directly from the usb. Not much time difference doing it from on the pc, and much better quality.

Not sure if it works or even exists but there used to be a program called Busker which it, as far as I know, was supposed to be able to use and play old Yamaha styles. Never tried it, so someone else may have and can help.

It may play them, but they can never sound right, because there is no access to the quality voices on the keyboard.

That's very true, only on a keyboard can you get the proper sounds, Busker and software like XG works will play them to give a general idea only. Back in the days when the programs were written keyboards weren't that brilliant sound wise so probably a decent computer and speakers at the time we're not too different.

Hello,

Some past posts of mine show I have the same problem. So many styles!!!   I haven't found the perfect solution to audition and organize them all. I agree with the other posts here. They just don't sound right thru most midi players.  I do have a wireless connection on my Genos. MIDI cables will accomplish the same. I can play style and midi files on my computer with Genos playing the proper voices.

Using my Genos as just a sound module seems wasteful. I'm sure it was built for this but I'd much rather audition all these styles on the comfort of my desktop. Last night I stumbled upon Giglad. It has a 45 day unlimited demo, t6hen you buy it. or just continue with the highly limited demo.  But......I like what I heard. It uses VSTs so you can assign some really nice voices. They give you a gm softsyth, but it sounds dinky! I read somewhere there are soundfont players that will work and some of them are supposed to be excellent. I already have Reason and FL Studio on this computer so it found many VSTs I could use.  Yes..... these still aren't the lovely Genos voices but they will certainly sound good enough (or better with quality VSTs) to audition to see if these styles are worthy of more manipulation. I'll play around with it some more and see if it works for me.   -charley
