MP3 songs "data format not support"

Hello. I am exploring the ability to play along with songs from USB on my SX700. My understanding is that only MP3 files are supported so I created a USB with only MP3s. Wav files did not work as I tried them anyway.

My issue is that not all the MP3 audio files are working. They work fine on my other devices(phone, tablet, PC) but some when selected on my SX700 pop up with the message " This data format is not supported".

What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this.  My only thought is that perhaps the MP3 file has "album data" imbedded that the keyboard can not read.

In addition, for those that do play well, how do I control the volume for the left hand split to make it louder than the right?  I have used the AUDIO but seams to control the whole keyboard volume. Reason why I am asking is because as I am playing along with the song, I can't always hear if I am playing the correct accomp chords. Right hand Keys seem louder so I would like to tone them down and tone up the left hand.

Check the file name if it is not too long.
Or you can upload it here for us to check.

Hello Norman.

The file names are not long but regardless I did shorten them and that made no difference. Others with longer names do work, special characters are accepted, I even have some with Arabic symbols and they also work regardless of the length.

I have the links for two of a number of bad ones that you can check out for me as you suggested

I downloaded both mp3 and they play perfect on my laptop. The files have the extension m4a and I think that's the problem. Change the extension to mp3 and the problem should be solved.

Hello. Duurduur... now you have me totally confused. These files on my USB, on my Google Drive, on my PC and when opened on the Google Drive and even after I downloaded them from the link I pasted are all showing MP3 File (.mp3) properties and revealing actual file name.  Not sure where the W4A is coming from. The keyboard does not even recognize M4A so in my case it would never have been selected to prompt the data format message.  I put some files with that extension just to make sure and they were not listed.

Now to take this one step further and verify the actual name a different way, I have android phones and a good test is to simple load the file on the android. A true MP3 file will show up with a blue icon and a music note in the center as that is how most apps display MP3 WAV WMA files.  Now rename it with an M4A extension(it still will play on the Phone) but you will see a red icon with a mic in the center which denotes a Voice recorder type file unless there is album art imbedded and then in that case it will show the album art rather than red icon.  Rename it back to MP3 and it's back to it's original state.

To add more about file behavior, I took and MP4(video), renamed it to MP3 and loaded it in the keyboard to see if that would work and in my case with this particular file it was read and played fine on the keyboard.

Hi Dom,

these files are "MP4A" audio files (correct file extension is ".m4a"). If you open such a file in a text editor on the computer (e.g. Windows Editor), in the first lines you will see something like "ISO Media file produced by Google Inc." and "mp4a".

The files may be played correctly on the computer/smartphone/tablet, even if they have the wrong file extension ".mp3". But they are definitely not MP3 files.

You could use an online converter to convert these files from .m4a to .mp3, e.g. here:
>>> https://convertio.co/de/m4a-mp3/
>>> https://audio.online-convert.com/convert/m4a-to-mp3

Attention: If you don't have an ad blocker installed in your browser, you will usually see large, misleading buttons (e.g. labeled "Start" or "Convert") or other advertising that has nothing to do with the converter on such websites. So be careful where you click. ;)

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris.

This is something very new to me as I tried every possible way that I know of to see if there was something else odd about them and they only kept showing up as I described above.  I will load that software and convert everything, even the ones that are working just to make sure that I do not miss anything.

I appreciate this info and will update with a status once I get my issue resolved.

   Thank you.                dom

Chris,

I just followed your instructions, nice converter software. Things worked fine.  Something I never would have thought possible based on all the indicators that my devices and programs display of the file type.

Now if I may so that I can see what you see (M4A) I can not determine what I need for this editor as I am prompted for Video, audio program to load down on my Windows 10 Pro.  Would hate to load unnecessary software if I do not need it. Can I ask how to view in edit mode what you see.

  Suggestion please.

Hi Dom,

You don't need to download any additional software. As mentioned before, DO NOT click any "big green buttons", or similarly, outside of the actual converter user interface on those websites. In the case of my first link (convertio.co) you click on the red button "Dateien wählen" / "Select Files" to upload your files and then you can download the files converted to .mp3.

P.S.
If you are looking for a good player for the computer, I recommend VLC Media Player. It plays almost all existing audio and video file formats. It can also play video streams and of course also play CDs and DVDs:

hello dom,
As Chris said, this is a m4a file. And it's not only about "m4a" file extension. m4a file format is just a container for encoded (compressed) audio data. In your case, so called Advanced Audio Codec (AAC) is used -not mp3.
Load this file into any decent audio editor and then "Save As.. " mp3 file.

To avoud confusion and troubles in future, I highly recommend MediaInfo (is free, I'm using it and it works).

Hope that helps,
Bogdan

Thank you all for your support and information. I really learned something today about these audio files. Never knew that visual file format/extension can be a misnomer. To me I always understood that what you see in the file extension is what you get.  I have down loaded the Mediainfo.

Just so that I know that I am using this software correctly to tell me what the file type is, I have loaded the Bad Moon Rising which you folks have seen it to be M4A.  When I open the file with Mediainfo and select the TREE View, I see  "Codec ID mp4a-40-2 under the audio format secation.
Is this correct and what I am supposed to see???

Best regards to all!

hello dom,
Different audio formats write different information inside file. For example "CodecID" tag isn't used in mp3 files, etc. However, every file will have "Format" info, i.e.:
m4a file Format: AAC LC
mp3 file Format: MPEG Audio
-everything that folows, is description of that format.
This can be:
m4a file CodecID: mp4a-40-2 (but can also be something else!)
mp3 file Format profile: Layer3 (always for mp3)
The rest is technical stuff (Bit rate, number of channels, sampling rate, etc.) which can be useful to pinpoint the problem (if there's any).

As you realized, MediaInfo will show actual info inside file regardless of file extension. Anyway, if you have trouble with some audio (or video) file, I suggest that you first check file that works and compare MediaInfo data with file that makes trouble.

Greetings,
Bogdan

Additionally, iTunes has handy converters to mp3, AAC (m4a), AIFF, Apple lossless, wav. Under import settings.
If you happened to be using itunes anyway.

HI Mark.  Just back from vacation and saw your post.  I don't use iTunes. I am working fine now with the software converter mentioned above.  Thanks for the added info.

Just to remenber....

MP3 files has many  technical "specifications" : bit rate, 16 bit,24 bit, 32 bit, etc.

Not all types of MP3 Yamaha keyboards are able to read.

I have a PSR S970 and suffer with until I change this kind os "specification".
