Changing the ending of midi recording from Yamaha arranger

Looking for some advice.

I often take songs I've previously recorded on my Yamaha arranger keyboards and remove verses/choruses in my DAW (Logic Pro) to adapt to our church repertoire.

This works out fine, just importing the midifile into Logic and cutting up the tracks with the snip tool, and rearranging them.

The problem I have though is when I playback the new shorter midifile on the Yamaha keyboard (either Genos or PSR SX600), the song finishes playback where I need it to but then the midifile keeps playing on (silently) until the original ending point of the recording before editing.

Whilst this isn't a big deal, it can be worrying if I change registrations (and hence songs) between performances without first stopping the sequencer playback.  In this case the next song will begin playing as soon as I change registration!

Does anyone know how to edit the midifile's stop or end point events to the new bar ending?  I assume there's some midi event I need to change for stop/end.

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon,

The easiest way is to set the (Project) End Marker directly in Logic with the mouse as desired. I usually set the end marker one beat after the end of the last MIDI note. So that a longer reverb effect is not cut off, it may be necessary to set the End Marker 1 - 2 bars after the last MIDI note. See also the following video:

Alternatively, you can also move the End Marker of a MIDI file on the Genos. Go to "MIDI Multi Recording > Step Edit". The End Marker should now appear at the end of the event list. If not, make sure that under "Event Filter" the display of the Markers is switched on. When you've moved the End Marker appropriately, save the MIDI file. Also see the attached screenshot.

As far as I know, what is described is not possible on the SX600 because there is obviously no Step Edit function in the SX600's Song Creator.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris.  How do you actually keep the change to the end marker?  I've edited this on Genos with Step Edit, moved the cursor to the bar number for the end marker and changed it from 184 to 50.  However it does not retain the change and reverts back to 184 each time (even if I tap Save and save the song?)

Thanks for your feedback, Simon!

It is important that you use the Save icon in MIDI Multi Recording / Step Edit, i.e. not in the Song Selection display.

In this case (when changing events such as the End Marker), as far as I know, you don't need to press the Song Stop button and use "Setup > Execute" before saving (which is necessary to save changes made in the Mixer to the MIDI file) . Please try to enter a new/changed file name when saving to be sure that you really load the newly saved file afterwards.

By the way, if you previously saved under the same name (i.e. overwrote the source file), please note that you have to reload the file as well. (Load any other MIDI file first, and then load the file where you moved the End Marker.) Also note that when using Registrations, an already loaded MIDI file will NOT be reloaded when Registration buttons are pressed. So you would either have to first call up a registration that loads a different MIDI file, or manually reload the MIDI file as described above to ensure the new version is in memory.

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks Chris. I'll keep trying but so far I have been unable to change the value of the measure on the song end marker. I am also unable to delete it. I'm sure I did try the save at the top of the step edit screen but didn't see any results.  I'll keep you updated!

Sussed it finally Chris!   When I look on the Genos in the step editor at the sy*** track, I noticed there were time signature markers on each bar between the new ending of my song and the song end marker.  These were preventing me changing the song end marker!  One I multi-selected all of those time signature markers and deleted them, I could successfully edit the song end marker, save it and now it plays perfectly to the new ending!

Thank you for the tip   :D

Thanks for your kind and detailed feedback, Simon! Nice that it worked now.

Yes, so that you can move the End Marker further in the direction of the beginning, of course there must be no more events in this area.

Chris
