I have had ALL the Tyros models but never has one crashed
I have had this Genos 9 months and it has crashed 5 times
By crashing I mean
a) spinning saying checking
b) Freezing unable to play the keyboard
c) not selecting the correct item  ( mainly registration from playlist)

Am I alone?
Any advice

Toril S

You are not alone. It helps to reduce the number of files in a folder. Remove corrupt files and registrations, they can mess up the system. And sliw down a little when going through menus, the keyboard needs a little time to follow our orders!

Chesterkins,

Make sure you have the latest update and remove all USB sticks, and anything else you have plugged into it and see if it still crashes.

Your problem in a) is that you have a folder with lots of files in it. This causes searches to take an inordinate amount of time. You need to take your USB stick to a computer, and check each folder for the number of files in it. It doesn't matter what type they are, it's the number that's the issue. Ensure each folder has fewer than 400 files.

In addition to any USB sticks, you need to check the User drive. Connect to a computer using a standard printer cable, power on while holding down the Playlist button. Now the User drive will appear as an external drive to the computer, and you can perform the same checks.

Once you've cleaned up your drives, power the keyboard on, and let it sit for an hour. This will allow it to build the indexes it uses to speed up searches.

Cheers,
Fred

PS. None of your Tyros models had a search feature. That's why you're having this problem solely on the Genos.

You are right on the number of files per folder
My Tyros 5 would not allow me to put more than 500 files per folder
I thought this was an'extra' with the Genos   Clearly not

The Genos allows 2500 per folder. Doesn't mean you should max out, though.

Dear friends,

I see various statements abut the maximum quantity of files in one folder.

I did not find anything about on both manuals.

Does Yamaha indicates the max?

Thank you (so much)

I believe I have read somewhere that the max per folder (2500?) includes those contained in any sub folders   ??? or have I just made that up ???
Cheers, Terry

see Owners Manual page 38 > Note:
"The maximum number of files/folders which can be stored in a folder is 2500"

Thank you so much Vanzee. Very important information!

It is so different than 250 (as many said....)  that would have been a severe limitation.

The old limit *was* 250 (going back to T1, CVP309, PSR3000 era). Since it was a single byte directory lookup.

Trouble again

I was playing the Genos and couple of the keys felt stickly  so I cleaned them (pressing several keys at once )  and the OTS froze!!!
Is there and update to fix all these bugs??
I have never had so many software issues with a Yamaha keyboard

EileenL

Have never had a problem but always clean my keys before I switch on. It is possible to freeze keyboard if trying to do things to quickly. It would depend on what you were doing before you hit a fist full of keys and the keyboard did not know what you were asking of it. Just power off and on again. It will also sometimes lock if you are trying to load in a corrupt file. This is not a bug but the keyboard protecting itself.

I am surprised that I am having these problems  I am not really treating the Genos any different to my Tyros's in all respects but I have never had so many issues
You are right Eileen all I have to do is either switch the KB off then on OR do a soft reset and its back to normal  BUT i can count on one hand over 10-15 years of Tyros ownership that I have had to do that   Fickle !!

Toril S

Genos runs on Linux. Guess it s a little more prone to such things than the old OS.

Used to happen to me when I had Tyros keyboards and was trying to do things to fast no realising that the system needs a little time to sort things out. Never did soft resets though unless really called for.

Isn't this a feature in the Yamaha keyboards whereby you hit 3 keys to pause the style playing?

Hi chesterkins.  You didn't say what OS version you were running on your Genos. The latest version is 2.11. Assuming you have the latest OS when did the problem begin? Right after you bought it? Or did it begin to happen after you loaded files (audio, MIDI, styles, multi-pads, etc.)  onto it? Or did it start happening after an OS update if, in fact, you've updated the OS since you bought it? Although it might have come with OS 2.11 when you bought it if you bought it new? Either way, those two things could be the culprit i.e. bad OS update process or files might have become corrupt somehow. One way to find out if the SSD has errors on it is to start the Genos in Storage Mode (hold down the Playlist button and turn on the Genos) it will boot up into Storage Mode. I assume your Genos is connected to your computer via USB [HOST] and you're also running a Windows Operating System? If you're running Windows 10 with the latest updates when you boot into Storage Mode on your Computer in File Explorer the Genos will appear as a Drive i.e. E: or F: etc. If there are errors on the Genos SSD a window should pop up saying the SSD might have errors on it and then gives you the option to 'scan' the Drive. It has happened to me on my Genos. Windows should be able to repair the Drive if errors were found. Hope this helps.

All the best,
Mike

EileenL

The reason for spinning maybe because you have to many files in a folder and problem with playlist maybe because you have not got the USB stick with it on in the keyboard at the time.

I believe if you play three keys at once inside the Style area, it triggers a fill.

That's not correct.

If you play three adjacent keys, it will silence the accompaniment leaving only the drums playing. Note this does not apply to Single Fingered or Multi Fingered mode.

Yamaha calls this "Chord Cancel".

Thanks Fred. I've noticed though (though my own clumsiness) that once in a while if I hit three keys, I hear a cymbal crash or something. What is that? I thought it was a partial fill.

Good one, Mike!! I'm a decent player but I find it easier to play the Genos AFTER I remove my boxing gloves ;D ;D ;D ;D.
