Hi Guys :

I want to install above Joergen Soerensen's prog in win11. It does not work. :-X
It needs .NET Frame work 3.5 to be installed.

Hope someone can help me out how to operate ( step by step ).

Thanks in advance, JH

johan

For dotnet 3.5, you find info here:
https://websiteforstudents.com/how-to-install-net-framework-3-5-in-windows-11/

By the way, are you sure you need dotnet 3.5 and not dotnet 4?

Hi Johan :

Thank you for helping me out. Very much appreciated.

Win11 says it has already installed dotnet 4.8.

But ... I cannot open this prog.  :-X
Before downloading Joergen's program win says I need to download NET Framework 3.5 but I cannot download it either.

I am in trouble, sorry !

Best regards, JH

johan

Maybe you just still need to enable dotnet 3.5:
- Turn windows features on of off (control panel or via search after pressing windows key)
- Make sure all dotnet items are selected (3.5 and 4.5 but no need to select the subitems "windows communication foundation")
- Press "OK"

Hi Johan :

Win11 says : You cannot download .NET Frame work 3.5 from the Windows Update.

I do not want to bother you any longer.

Apparently Joergen's prog is not working in win11. Hopefully I am wrong.

Thank you for your help. JH

Hi jeff.
Maybe this is for any help?

Quote: "You may need the .NET Framework 3.5 to run an app on Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8. You can also use these instructions for earlier Windows versions."

Jørgen

Hi
The program is designed for .Net 4 or higher.
I am not familar with Windows 11 requirements, but .Net 3.5 sounds somewhat strange.
I am not able to look deeper in this at the moment as I am on holiday in Greene right now.

Hi Jeff,

Did you really use the current version (1.22) of "Style Format 2 Converter"? If not, please download this version here:
>>> http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/software/sf2c/index.htm

P.S.
I use the "Software Program Manager" to manage Jørgen's programs and to keep them up to date:

Best regards,
Chris

Jørgen

Hi again
Version 1.22 (current) requires .Net 4 or higher.
Older versions are designed to .Net 2.0.
Maybe win 11 do not support .Net 2.0 software programs? I can not find out right now.

Good morning Chris :

I have installed the two Joergen's progs as suggested by you.

When I try to open both progs win says : SEE attachment.
There seems nothing else to be I can do.

In other words : it looks like win11 is not working here.

H E L P

Thank you so much, JH

W A R N I N G for whom it may concern

THERE ARE MUCH MORE BUGS IN WIN11 FOR THE TIME BEING.
IF YOU HAVE THE INTENTION TO TRY WIN11, PLSE DO NOT FOLLOW ME. WAIT AT LEAST 3 MONTHS.

I REMOVED WIN10 FROM MY PC AND THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE  !!!

Hi Jeff,

Windows 11 does NOT include ".NET Framework 3.5 (which also contains 2.0 and 3.0) by default. Normally, version 3.5 should simply be installed via "Control Panel > Install Windows Features" (by just ticking a box). Obviously, this works with Windows 11 is not by default and an appropriate error message is issued.

There are now many tutorials on YouTube to solve this problem:
>>> https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=windows+11+dot+net+3.5

The simplest method should be this:
>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFtypMTleoM

Simply use one of the two links at the top of the video description (click on "Show more"!) and follow the instructions in the video.

Important: I have NOT tried it myself, because at the moment I have not yet installed Windows 11. Of course, I cannot give any guarantee.

Best regards,
Chris

Many thanks for all your efforts and support, Chris ! :)

For the time being a Dutch friend is converting the SFF2 styles for me in windows10 and sends the file(s) to me.
Then I uplaod them in XGWorks, an old Yamaha prog that cannot read SFF2.

Wished an expert could create an XGWorks patch to make SFF2 usable for XGW but that is not possible at all.

Several people have tried to find a solution but it is a dream that will never come true.

In the coming days I will see what I can do with your suggestions. I will keep you posted.

Best regards, JH

Hi Jeff,

Why shouldn't XGworks support SFF2 (= SFF GE) Styles?

I don't use XGworks very often. But I have just loaded a Genos Preset Style into XGworks (V3.0.7E) without any problems.

Hi Chris :

SFF2 styles in XGW ? A miracle ? WOW.

I am using XGW for all my midi editing jobs since 1997.

I am told only SFF1 styles ( with a *.sty extension ONLY ! ) will work in XGW. Nothing else.

The last update by Yamaha has been done in 2002, right ?

Plse advise. Many thanks, JH

Hi Jeff,

The file extension of a Style file doesn't matter. Just click "File > Open" (or the "Open" icon) and change the File Type in the "Open" window to "All Files" (*.*)". Then you can see (and load) any compatible files such as MIDI files (.mid, .kar), Style files (e.g. sty, .prs, .sst), Voice Set files (e.g .vce), Multi Pad files (.pad).

P.S.
I have just installed Windows 11 Pro in a virtual machine (in "VirtualBox" on Windows 10). After installing "Style Format 2 Converter", the message also released that this app needs ".NET Framework 3.5". I clicked on the top button in this message, and the required files were then automatically downloaded and installed (without further error message).

Then I opened "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on and off" and found that the checkmark was not set at ".NET Framework 3.5". Therefore, I ticked this box, and a message appeared that the process has been successfully completed.

Now "Style Format 2 Converter" can be successfully started and works flawlessly at Win11. (See also the attached picture.) :)

By the way, my Windows 11 has the version "21H2 (Build 22000.194)". Which Windows 11 version do you have? (Press  "Windows key + R", enter "winver" and press the "Enter" key to check the version.) You may still have an older Win 11 version, and the problem with the error message (when trying to install .NET Framework 3.5) may be solved with the next automatic Windows Update.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chris :

I have win11 Home, 64-bits, Version Dev 21996.1. OK ?

Thank you for giving me the info how you open a SFF2 style file in XGW.

A complete different operation than described in the manual though.
Gonna try it and let you know the outcome.

Which XGW Version are you working with ?

Best regards, JH

Hi Jeff,

I hadn't worked with Windows 11 until yesterday, but in principle, I think the current version/build number is the same for the Home and Professional version. So my version is newer.

Is your Windows 11 PC permanently connected to the internet? Normally it should then update itself automatically. Or you enter "update" in the search field and click on "Check for updates". (I had just done that, and another update had already been downloaded, only the restart was missing. The version has changed to "21H2 Build 22000.258" now.)

Edit:
At first I ignored the identifier "Dev" in your Windows 11 version number. This is probably a "Dev Channel" (development) version from the "Windows Insider Program". At the moment I don't know whether this version can be easily updated to the current version using the Windows Update function. It will be best to google it.

Regarding XGworks: I'm using v3.07E.

Chris  :

A crazy situation!
Always troubles with Windows.
Hope they are solved soon.

Would you do me a favour plse  ?

Is it possible to make an XGW video to show me how you enter an SFF2 style and how you add chords and edit some parts ?
A simple, short video with sound, plse.
I would be very grateful.

Best wishes, JH

Hi

@ Chris
Thanks Chris for investigazing and solving this issue. Just glad that my software was not causing the problems.
I returned from a great holiday in Greece last night; and have hence been unable to handle this issue.

@ Jeff
I understand your interest in trying new software. But when it's a new Windows version my best advice is: wait three months. Then many mistakes have been corrected. And a lot of hassle avoided.   ;)
