Saving a external style with no change of the extension

Hi
I hope someone can help me.
I have an external Yamaha Pro-Style on a USB stick. The style extension is "pro". I have changed the voice of PHR2 in this style. I was able to save the style, but my Tyros 5 created a new style that is no longer displayed as pro style. The style extension is now "sty". I would like to overwrite the original style (=pro) with my changed style so that the "pro" extension is preserved (without creating a new style)
Thanks for your support.

Can't be done on the keyboard. Has to be done on a computer.

Hi Peter,

yes, as mentioned by Fred, just use a computer: Connect the USB stick to the PC, delete the original Style from the stick (or move it to a location on the computer's hard disk). Then change the file extension of your changed Style from .sty back to .prs.

P.S.
The Style always plays exactly the same, no matter which extension the Style file has.

Best regards,
Chris

Not sure why the ext is important to you, as it plays the same regardless. But if it is just to remind you that it is a 'pro' style you could maybe do this in the name when you save it - something like Country Blues pro.sty or even Country Blues pro2.sty if you have changed it. Then you can save on the keyboard.

The extension is important if you've included the style in a registration. Without the correct extension, the registration can't find it.

The real question is whyYamaha has all these silly extensions.

Hi
Thank you all for your support. I tried Mix-Master and it worked.
The reason for my request is very simple. I want to keep a change process as simple as possible.
My example: I have 10 styles where I have changed something (Voices, Volume etc.). When saving on the keyboard I have 10 additional styles. Since I don't want to keep the original styles, I have to delete them. By overwriting the styles this process is not necessary. Call me laszy - accepted.   :)

Thanks again.

Hi Fred,

I think it's basically good that the Style type can be identified by the extension of (original) Styles.

A Pro Style (.prs), which reproduces exactly the chords actually played, differs e.g. strongly from a Session Style (.sst).

A long time ago I compiled the following list of the different Yamaha Style types. I hope it is still complete ...

.sty = Standard Style
.bcs = Basic Style
.prs = Pro Style
.sst = Session Style
.scp = DJ Style

.fps = Free Play Style
.aus = +Audio Style

.pst = Pianist Style (solo)
.pcs = Piano Combo Style

Best regards,
Chris

I agree there should be differentiated styles, but I don't think the extension is the way to do it. It makes it more difficult to associate the files with a program like MixMaster, when you sort by extension they don't stay together, and we run the risk of Yamaha choosing an extension that conflicts with something else we have on our computer.

I think a better way would have been a "sub-extension" like Style.prs.sty

There are already "sub-extensions" like T160, T558, S304, S321, etc. Does anyone know the meaning of this? My keyboard (SX700) does not display this part of the filename so that some styles have exactly the same name while their names are different on the pc.

Hi Johan,

these are not "sub-extensions" but it's the so called "Icon ID" (a period + a letter "S" or "T" + a three-digit number). If you change the icon of a file on the keyboard, this code in the file name changes. You can also change this code on the computer if desired. (Its optional. Therefore, if removed completely, the standard icon of that file type will be displayed on the keyboard.)

Thanks, Chris. I had been wondering for one year now what was the meaning of this and now I know it  :)
