Synth / sound module that has a patch set to this +2/-2 pitch bend range - GENOS

How to find out the various voice instruments on GENOS KEYBOARD about the set up of the voice patch (whether set up to +2/ -2 pitch bend range?

If your synth / sound module has a patch that is not set to this +2/-2 pitch bend range the messages from the G2M will not translate into the desired pitch bend.

In extreme cases if the patch is set to bend a full octave (+12/-12) playing this on the G2M will sound very strange indeed and it will feel like the G2M can't track the pitch at all.

The solution is to simply ensure that whatever patches you use with the G2M have their pitch-bend range set to +2/-2 semitones.

The Pitch Bend Range is set in the Mixing Console, not stored in the Patch.  Pitch Bend is what is referred to as a Voice Channel Message. You can set R1 Pitch Bend, R2 Pitch Bend and R3 Pitch Bend to different values if you like.

Oz, I'm not sure if your post is a question or a solution to some problem? I don't know what G2M is, maybe you mean a GM2 compatible device?

Anyway, as far as Genos is concerned the Pitch Bend Range is not part of a Genos voice. It is set in [Menu2][Keyboard/Joystick] (you may want to use [DIRECT ACCESS] then move the joystick in the Pitch Bend direction as a shortcut).

You may store the current Pitch Bend Range in the registration. Ranges for R1/2/3 are stored in the Voice Group, Left goes into the Style Group.

If you change the Pitch Bend Range manually, Genos sends a Pitch Bend Sensitivity RPN message to your external device. If you hit a registration key that has the Voice and/or Style Group stored, again Pitch Bend Sensitivity RPN messages will be sent (if this modifies the current Pitch Bend Range setting). If you don't want this to happen, you have to disable the CC transmission in Genos' Midi Setup. Drawback is that this prevents the transmission of any CC which you possible don't want.

External devices may have their own idea where to store Pitch Bend Ranges and how to handle Pitch Bend Sensitivity messages. Some may respond to these RPN message, others will ignore it. As always when connecting MIDI devices, you should know exactly what will be transmitted from the source device and how the target device will react to these incoming messages. Otherwise you may experience some surprises.

The PB message is NOT "stored" anywhere. It is a channel message. You are providing misinformation.  The Pitch Bend message is NOT a CC (continuous controller) it is 14-bit "Voice Channel Message")  When you change the PB Range in the Mixing Console (TUNE page), the keyboard does transmit the PB range to an external module or keyboard. (it is temporary)

The filter you allude to the MIDI setup has a separate tick for CC and Pitch Bend. You can turn off the transmit PB and still transmit CCs.

You're mixing up Pitch Bend and Pitch Bend Range i.e. Sensitivity. Just read carefully what I wrote.

  • I didn't write that the "PB message" is stored anywhere.
  • I didn't write that the "PB message" is a CC message.
Your quoting me wrong and call that "misinformation". Please get your records straight.

It's the Pitch Bend Range/Sensitivity that is stored in the registration under the conditions described above. [Extra credit: in OTS too and you may store this information also in a Song file by writing Keyboard Voice data; that's just for the sake of completeness, no added value for the owner of this thread].

BTW, this is a Genos subforum, there is no tune page in the Genos mixing console. This used to be in the legacy Tyros arrangers.

We obviously agree that changes of the PB Range triggers a PB Sensitivity message. This is sent as RPN (registered program number) data. RPN LSB and RPN MSB are transmitted as parameters of CC 64H and 65H resp. That means that PB Sensitivity transmission is disabled by turning off CC transmission. Pitch Bend is still being transmitted, as this is controlled by the separate PB tick.
