Hi all,

Does anyone here happen to have some sort of a software (preferably freeware) for Windows that can batch convert an entire folder or at least few tents of type 0 to type 1 MIDI's at once?
It's going to be a bit a of a faf to use Sonar to do about a 1000 MIDI's one by one, that's going to take ages.
Jorgen has one that converts from 1 to 0 but not vice versa, which is unfortunate.

Cheers!

Valentin

Hi Valentin,

what is the reason that you want to convert SMF type 0 MIDI files to SMF type 1 format?

Best regards,
Chris

Hey!
If you change from MIDI 0 to MIDI 1, the lyrics will disappear in the midi file (if there are lyrics) and it is very unnecessary to remove it, if you have made the effort to insert the lyrics, the midi file works as it is, so why ?????

Midifile Format Converter is a free program with which you can convert MIDI format. Give it a try, it might help.

The lyrics will NOT disappear when converting from 0 to 1 format.
They will be placed in a sepearte track of the midi file.

Hey Chris,

It's because the DAW I started using (Ableton Live 10) is able to separate each MIDI channel in separate track, since in MIDI type 0 all 16 midi channels are in one single track. It is kind a essential if you need to edit your SMF's.

Thanks for asking  ;)

Very much appreciated!

Thank you

ps. I'm not sure why, but it seem like it doesn't like every SMF, and it shows 'Error opening the file' message for no obvious reason. It managed to convert only about 6-7 out of 250 SMF's

Hi Valentin,

in my opinion, it is NOT necessary to convert MIDI files from format 0 to 1 first by another program, since on each DAW I know the resulting single track when a format 0 MIDI file is imported can be separated ("demixed") with only one or two clicks (or a keyboard shortcut) into (up to)16 tracks by MIDI channel. Most of the time, the DAW can alternatively also be set to do this automatically when a format 0 MIDI file is imported.

Chris

The most sequencers like cubase xgworks do the convert
you can save the midi file in 0 or 1 format

I know, Sonar, Cubase, etc.... does separate each channel in different track by default even when importing type 0 SMF, but apparently Ableton does not. It sees SMF type 0 as one track, which is rather unfortunate and weird considering how flexible and malleable everything else is, in terms of working with both MIDI and audio, idk. It says it in black and white in the manual that this is how Ableton 'understands' importing type 0 or 1, and in fact it does exactly that, type 1 puts every midi channel in separate track, but not with type 0.

Pity.

Hi Valentin,

you are right: I just downloaded the Ableton Live V10 Manual and must read that this BIG program can NOT "demix" an imported type 0 MIDI file to separate Tracks. This is really a disgrace ... :(
