Hello,
I tried to find some definitive answer but failed so far. Here are my two questions:

1. I had 3 PSR keyboards so far (SX700 currently) and all create styles with STY file extension. However, on web I found styles with PRS extension which Yamaha recognizes. Question: which Yamaha keyboards make styles with PRS (and some other) extension?

2. I haven't tried to export all built-in styles/voices from keyboard, but it seems, that so far all my keyboards created files having ".Tnnn" in names (which defines what icon should be shown). Again, I could get some styles which have ".Snnn" tag instead, and my keyboard seem to recognize that tag properly -obviously, T175 and S175 (for example) don't show the same icon. Question: which keyboards generate such files?

The styles with sty are psr keyboard styles
Works on all yamaha keyboard
The styles with different extencies are for the tyros keyboards and genos
some are with audio samples

Hi

Yamaha started a few years ago with different file extensions to specify the style type. Look more at http://www.jososoft.dk/yamaha/articles/software_12.htm

Thank you both for quick reply, however that doesn't answer my two questions :)
1. Which keyboard(s) generate PRS style files (either by default or by choice)?
2. Which keyboard(s) generate "Snnn" icon numbering in file names (either by default or by choice)?

Greetings,
Bogdan

Thank you Jorgen,
very helpful to me at least.

Sorry can't really help with your question Bogden.
When I was putting my style library together, the styles I collected had different types of extensions, but they weren't USER styles, they were factory styles. Psr's  and Tyros.

Hi Bogdan,
The .prs(pro) styles are Yamaha's preset styles.
All models at least from S series/tyros/Genos have those kind of styles.
When you use the Style Creator to change and save a preset .prs style to your user or usb area now automatically is saved as .sty style.
At least that's what I have seen on my keyboard.

The icon of the style you have chosen to save that style, defines the numbers Snnn.
E.g S100 could be the "train" icon of psr S710.

Again, thank you all for insights.
Now, maybe I'm not able to see "obviously" thing here. That is, I know Yamaha keyboards and YEM do recognize styles with STY, PRS (and some other) extensions. My three Yamaha's can only make STY files (unless I've missed something). Which keyboard makes PRS files? I think Yamaha probably had a reason to introduce PRS extension -not only to fool people by thinking they're dealing with some "pro" styles.
Same goes for Tnnn and Snnn tag for icon. I know what purpose they serve and how to use them. Again however, my keyboards can only make Tnnn tag. Which keyboard makes Snnn tag?

Can't help myself.. I'm just darn curious  :)

Hi Bogdan,

Any style that you SAVE from the keyboard will always have the file extension '.sty', even if you haven't made any changes to the style!

For example, if you load a preset style with an original extension of say '.prs' and save it, from either within or outside of Style Creator, it will be saved with a '.sty' extension.  If you want to make a copy of a preset style, if you use the COPY/PASTE function (or 'Copy/Copy Here' on the latest models) instead of SAVE, the style copy will keep its original extension.

Note that the file extension simply indicates the type of style to the user.  As far as I know it doesn't affect the way that a keyboard plays the style!  So a 'saved' copy of a preset style (which will now have a '.sty' extension) should sound exactly the same as the original preset on the source keyboard, whatever its original extension.

You can change the file extension using a computer if you like, but make sure that you use an extension that your Yamaha OS recognises as a style or it won't be displayed on the style selection display!

Regarding icon codes, the icon code does not affect the playback of a style in any way, and although some people seem a bit obsessed with them, I personally don't take any notice of them, so I have never bothered to look into what they might indicate!

Ian

Bogdan it is not a keyboard that generates the other style extensions.
These file extensions are probably been generated by Yamaha'a style making program, tha Yamaha's style makers only have to make the original Yamaha styles.

I have and s750 it always generates Snnn style images.
It has only black & white images similar to the all time classic arcade computer game "Space Invaders(1978)"  ;D

Maybe  the Tnnn is been generated by the Tyros series?

Keep in mind that maybe not all midi or music player programs on a pc are able to play a style, because they don't understand that those extensions like .prs are for playing a midi file.
For example to play a psr style with windows media player, I had to choose manually this program on my pc.
It was not recommended by my windows 7 automatically to use the windows media player for a .psr file.

The .sty extension on the other hand is more common and isused only by Yamaha,Korg and others so I guess it is easier to include this extension to pc/mac midi player programs.

Keep in mind that these extensions are related to computers and the way a file is made(it can  contain an image, midi data etc) and not just to styles that can play on our keyboards.

panos, you're the man!

So, S750 is creating styles with Snnn icon tags per default -mystery solved  :)
To stick with Yamaha, I assume S750 generation was the last one which used Snnn tags. Because, as it seems, since then (S670, S770, Tyros, Genos) all seems to create styles with Tnnn icon tags.

About PRS styles.. you think no Yamaha keyboard actually creates them and  that Yamaha only uses this extension for their in-house made styes? How can we know that?
I could nowhere see the option to purchase "pure" styles at Yamaha -they are always in packs. I have checked few original Yamaha packs currently available for PSR keyboards, and they all contain STY files.
I'll try to get some original pack for Tyros (as it's seen as "pro" keyboard) and see if they maybe contain PRS styles...

Thank you again and happy New Year  :)

Update (few minutes later):
Just downloaded "Tyros5 Styles for Genos" from Yamaha and yes, all listed styles have PRS extension. As it seems, Tyros and Genos keyboards create PRS style files after all. I assume this Yamaha step is pure "cosmetic" -to differentiate their product line.

The original Genos styles all seem to be .prs.
Ocanimus conversions for Tyros 5 are also .prs
On the other hand Peter's conversions for Tyros 5 are as .sty
(Maybe style creator has also used by Peter to convert the styles and so the extension has changed?)

As you and Ian have said nothing seems to be different in the styles because of the different extension. At least from the things we can hear.

I combine a lot preset styles to create suitable song styles and I choose one style to use as the base.
So as Ian said, when I copy paste it to user area it is still prs.
After the first modification in style creator, style creator saves a new sty style so I have to delete the previous prs style which I don't need it anymore.
I didn't noticed any missing sound though the first time I have scratched my head to see why this is happening only with the styles that have a "pro" mark on them. :)

Hi Panos, Yamaha and Korg  .sty extension, not the same thing ie I used to load my yamaha SFF1 styles into xg works to convert them to Korg,  even though Korg had the same .sty extension, xg works would not recognise a Korg .sty .

By coincidence, I managed to create style file on SX700 which had Snnn icon tag in filename. Forgot what S number exactly it was, but I know I chose custom icon SFX on my keyboard when I saved some style. Now, what I find interesting is.. if we take a look in YEM folder on PC ("instruments" subfolder), this exact icon has "T266_SFX.bmp" name -go figure!
So my conclusion about (Tnnn vs Snnn) icon tags is, there's no rule.

Thank you all for participating on this topic.. I hope it will be useful for some Yamaha keyboard owners in future.

I have just downloaded a couple of styles from Korg and Rikki is right.
Neither windows media player nor synthesia could play those Korg styles.

I tried this page for reading the style and gave me the results below and thousands of all kind of characters.
https://filext.com/file-extension/STY

File name:    USER01.STY
File type:    binary file
File size:    90 KB
File date:    27/6/2002, 12:13:24 μ.μ.

It's a binary data file, that's all we have found out. The file has a few characteristics of a TPL (Easy Working: The Planner spreadsheet (v2.10)) file.  ⓘ

Hi

As you in Windows Explorer can rename ANY file to have a sty extension, it is pretty obvious that there is no relation between the file extension and the structure/format of the data in the file.

This is the case with the Korg styles vs. the Yamaha styles: Both have the sty extension; but the structure/format inside the file is different.
Same goes with Band in a Box styles which are sty extension too.

Hi Panos,
Korg styles were not very computer friendly unless exported as a midi file ( of the style) and then worked on in a pc sequencer , then imported back in. Lucky it had brilliant onboard editing functions..
