I wonder if Tyros 4, Tyros 5 and S975 owners will feel the need to replace their wonderful and trustfull present arranger keyboard for the latest
SX900. What should be the pros and cons??

I think maybe if you are into Electronic dance music (EDM) you would go for the SX900.

I am still very happy with my S950 purchase and my plan was to keep it until at least 2022 (if it last that long) and then move up. I am going through the SX900 styles now and add them to my Yamaha style collection (you can't have to many pro styles).

That will also give Yamaha some time to fix any issues that may start to happen to the new touch screen idea. Putting in a touch screen might be cheaper for Yamaha but buttons I think are more reliable in the long run.

Hi :

Maybe most present T4 and T5 owners will wait for the Genos2.
Perhaps only a few Tyros owners will order the SX900 ...

But ... why should one kill a winning horse ?

IMHO a much better sound quality might be the main reason why people are upgrading.

Other features ( like e.g. a touch screen, a joystick etc. ) are less important for most musicians, I guess.

Hi beykock, as Drake, I am a S950 owner and agree with his position. By the way Drake, how can I get the SX900 styles?

EileenL

It is always a personal choice when purchasing keyboards but technology moves on in operation and sound quality plus new features. As for the touch screen there have not been any problems with Genos
and They will use the same type I am sure for the S900.

Babette

Babette, you are spot on,
But I haven't heard nothing new from the videos
Changing the color and some other features mean nothing to me
I already have everything I need to make excellent music
My audience already can't believe what they hear from my keyboard
Yamaha styles are really excellent, I pick and chose the best voices
The rest is down to my playing, I want to be my best everytime I play.

No, I will not upgrade. I am still very happy with my S975 and my Tyros 5😀

I am waiting for their time to arrive in Brazil. For sure, the price will be raised as soon as they arrive.
I think by mid-June 2020 it will have a better price. That's the time I'll save some money, and I put my s975 on the wheel.

Telmo:
Pra gente aqui do Brasil tudo é caro.

Hi Enildo :

It is good to hear your voice again ! :)

I personally believe the S975 is a very nice and pro arranger keyboard.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind the SX900 looks to be a nice successor.

Some questions though :

A. From what you/we have heard and seen ( video demo's and specs ), do you believe the sound quality of the SX900 is ( much ) better than the
sound quality of your S975 ?

B. Are the extra new SX900 features important enough to upgrade ?

C. Is it too early to make a decission now and do you prefer to see, to hear, to touch and to play the keyboard first ?

D. What about the S975 trade-in price in your country ? The S975 is almost a brand new instrument ( 2018 ).

Thank you for your reply.

Best wishes, Babette

Quotedo you believe the sound quality of the SX900 is ( much ) better than the

Babette, remember what counts for the Yamaha Company is the selling point. If you think back a few years ago, the story repeats itself. There are, no doubt a few improvements, but not a lot. For instance, if you check the official demos comparing the sound quality of Tyros 2 to Tyros 3, Tyros 4 and Tyros 5, you  might hear some litlle improvement in sound quality, and the same goes from the S950, S970, and S975. For the ones who wish to upgrade, they will justifying saying there is a considerably improvement in sound quality, whereas others  who won't will say there isn't much difference in sound quality.
The sound quality is not huge or substantial, but Yamaha needs to sell their new baby, and marketing is the key to impress the mass.

I noticed the difference in sound quality as soon as I played my Genos. Remember listening to things on You Tube is not the same as listening to the actual instrument.

As a T5 owner, there are some features on the SX900 that I would like, but I know I would miss the 76 key FSX keybed.

I am interested to hear one in person though, I think it's likely to be mid October before one arrives in the local shop.

It's possible I will prefer the sound of the SX, then I will have something to think about.

It's a shame the SX will not have the CFX and C7 samples.

I would like Genos but am just not quite brave enough to spend the money!

For God's sake, they're going crazy! Pure speculation!
Who rushes will be bad. I think it will arrive here with the value below 15mil ($ 3750) and then it will be 12mil ($ 3000).

I totally agree with you Babette!

I won't sell my soul to the devil to trade for sx900. kkkkkk
In the first months of release is always more expensive, then the value drops to reasonable standards.

Knowing my past behavior, I'd probably trade-up if they changed nothing but the model name, nothing else.  I'll soon know, once the SX's begin shipping, because I'll have a SX 900 sitting right next to the S975----in the same room, both through the same sound system.  If there's little to no difference, surely I'll be able to recognize it.

beykock

I have the impression the prices in your country ( Brazil ) seem to be very high or am I wrong ?

Babette

mikf

Like all new models some will upgrade from relatively recent models, like T5 but most will not. Then there are people with much older models who may have been considering an upgrade for a while and will think maybe now its time. But like most new arrangers, I imagine a lot of the sales will either be people completely new to arrangers, or moving from very low end, entry level keyboards.

Or different brands Mike ;)

On topic: I'm sticking to my T5. When and IF I upgrade it will either be the Genos 2, a Yamaha CSP or when winning the lottery a CVP ;) Or ...... who knows :D the PA4X successor.

Peter

You are absolutely right. Prices of musical instruments in Brazil is awfully high. It's outrageous. No wonder why the Genos had a very poor sell here in Brazil. Very few can afford it.

I am getting the SX900 to go along side my T4 and not instead of it. I don't think I could ever get rid of my T4, I am attached to it too much but I have been waiting for a more portable version of this keyboard and I think we may finally have it with some nice extras.

I would respectfully disagree with your assessment.  I like EDM but Yamaha's idea of EDM is way off base.  The best EDM is underground.  Back in the 1990s Yamaha's idea of Techo music was nothing short of bizarre. There are NO styles on any of Yamaha's arrangers that represent true (non commercial) EDM.  It's like they are from another planet.

My audition of the SX900 styles is... same ole same ole stuff... just remixed a little and then recycled. The remix of the DJ styes is rather poor, and they are Pop music not EDM.

My personal interest in the SX900 is more expansion memory, the joy-stick and (hopefully) better implementation of LIVE CONTROL, especially what gets saved in registrations.  I'm waiting for a report from Frank at Audioworks on what he finds.  A better quality key-bed would be welcomed as well. I have mixed feelings about the touch screen. There a buttons, but those are Style and Voice Category buttons... which I have little use for since I don't really play the Preset styles much; and since I bought expansion pack Voices, the Motif sound module and VL, Analog and FM plug-in cards I don't play the Preset Voice much either (just a few).

The SX900 ... a Tyros5 " upgrade " ?
Might be a bridge too far, I guess.😻

I am disappointed there are almost no " new " SX900 styles.
🐷
A face lift, a higher price but the sound quality seems not so much better than the sound quality of the S970/S975.

The SX900 looks nice, has some interesting additional pc features but ... musicians and audience are only interested in the sound and the music performance, IMHO.

Babette

Pino

PSR needed more expansion memory for sure
But
It's expensive memory

I paid $1,781 for more memory for my S950 (S975)

My audience wouldn't know if I'm playing an S910, S950 or a S975
They all sound just about the same
I can make an audio recording of a song on each keyboard and join the 3 audio pieces together
You really wouldn't know the difference

Yamaha styles have sounded good for the past 10+ years

Pino

beykock

If you are happy with your present keyboards and they offer you and your audience what is expected, why should you spend extra money, Pino ?

Making music is much more than technology only, I guess.
