Not sure if I posted this under the right topic.

I wanted to see how I could create a (EDM) style using Voices from multiple expansion packs and the Motif Voices.

I didn't really have a specific idea in mind except the above goal...  I just wanted to create something really different.

Style: I chose a Preset free style (EtherealMovie) and modified it extensively using Style Creator Assembly and Style Magic software... I added drums using the Preset Dance Kit and Magic Dance A Kit, I doubled the length of Intro 1, raised the Bass channel an octave and borrowed a couple of parts from other styles

I renamed the style: Ethereal Chill Beat

Style Part Voices: Preset Voices, Best of EDM, Magic Dance, Dreamscapes and Euro Dance pack Voices

Multi Pad: I combined 2 different (Magic Dance) Dance Drum Slice - Multi Pads into a single Multi Pad.

R1: Motif Voices with arpeggios

R2: A couple different slow Pad Sweeps from the Dreamscapes pack

Here's the results:  https://app.box.com/s/ibyvdhgsqm2rhwlcxt5sjpnfkiewdbm7

It was a bit of work since it was an experiment, I learned a lot and I like how it came out. When I play the style I feel like I'm playing a synthesizer and not an arranger.  I'm so glad Yamaha decided to add expansion capabilities and Live Control to the arranger keyboards.  The arranger is now truly a Digital Workstation.

Hey Joe, nice arrangement my friend!
ahhh those arpeggios sound so beautifully.
I love them!  :)
Wish I had the time to study about arpeggios and how the notes could be arranged to be part of the style with the synth and FX voices. (not just piano,or guitar sounds etc)
With registrations we could combine many style parts playing different voices with different kind of arpeggios and keep moving from one to the other to give that upbeat feeling.

Great job Joe!!

Thanks Panos.  I didn't use registrations on this one, though it would have been easier to play.  I did a lot of manual button pushing to add fill in drums, breaks and kept adding Multi Pads tracks with each style Main Section.

I've learned a lot about arpeggios.  All the style loop parts were created with an arpeggiator, but playing a live arpeggiator allows more variations than the recorded loops because the arp will follow the notes played with the right hand. If we vary (real-time) the Arp Note Gate Time we can create even more variations. I'm still experimenting with how to do this and will record some new loops and make style Parts and Multi Pads with them.

I'm really pleased that Peter at Easy Sounds has ported over some of the Motif sounds and arps as Multi Pads already.  I think we will more of that with each pack he releases for the arrangers.

Hello Joe, thank you for your explanation about the process you followed. It is very inspiring and a superb result to be proud on! Like the song very much as it is my taste (too)!
I nrecently  merged different packs with the YEM with the 770 as an experiment too. It is for me a limitation in the flexible use of the PSR770. That's a pity as I like the quality of the 770 much. It takes to much time to fill the limited user memory each time. So the future will tell if I will switch to a keyboard with a much larger user memory. For now, I will continue to experiment with the current Yammie.
My best regards,
Ton

Ton,

I'm waiting for the next PSR.  It will most likely have more expansion memory... which is what I need at this point.  I bought more SF2 sounds than I have room for.  I would like to get to the place where I can get rid of most of my external sound modules and have all the sounds I want in the keyboard. I use the Preset sounds minimally these days because I prefer the expansion pack Voices.

:)

I agree with you, Joe. A lot of more expansion memory room would be very nice. I am wondering why Yamaha kept the user space soo small anno 2019, even in the new arrangers??!!!
My best regards,
Ton

Thank you Hans... I appreciate your comments.

The Motif Voices blend so well with the S970 Voices and pack Voices too.  One of the reasons I bought the Motif sound module to record those arps and make style Parts and Multi Pads with them. The arranger is well suited for playing Electronic Dance and Chill Music with the right kind of sounds. Even the S970 arps playing the Motif Voices sounds much better than the S970 Preset Voices.

Just listening to this today Joe!  Super Job!  The sounds are wonderful.

Joe H

klaplante,

Thanks for your comments.  I recently had a request for my 'Integrating the Motif with a Yamaha Arranger' tutorial.  I never finished it but I plan to complete it in the next couple of weeks or so. I got very busy with other things that has kept me from playing my music very much.

wersianer,

It won't play correctly for you since it uses Motif Voices and arpeggios on R1 and Voices from Easy Sounds expansion pack on R2.  Dido for the style parts and Multi Pads.  This is a totally custom style and Multi Pads.

Thank you DerekA and Toril S for your kind comments.  I hope to get back to making more custom styles soon. I really enjoyed the mixing component.  Sometimes it takes many sessions to get the final mix just right.
