Hi everyone,

I have successfully scanned part of my collection of hand written music into my ipad pro using  the built in scanning function.
This is scanned, cropped & saved in "Notes".

I then send this to "Forscore" to be further cropped & saved in Setlists.

I'm getting notification that my Free 5GB "icloud" storage is full & no more backup is possible.
When I check my settings, the following apply:-

      "icloud"
Notes         2.3GB
Backups        708MB

   "General"
Notes           28MB          Documents & Data
forScore       746MB        Documents & Data

I'm wondering how come I can't backup anymore to icloud.

Your comments & suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards

Alan

There's always overhead in storing files, and there's no use trying to convince Apple you deserve more free space.

Your options are:
-- buy more storage from Apple
-- don't bother backing up to iCloud
-- delete some files (from your description you have duplicate files in Notes and Forscore)
-- use a different backup service (Google Drive gives you 15gb for free).
-- use a computer as your backup device

One Drive and Google Drive are your Best option.

If you want more storage.
Consider a Hard Disk / Pen Drive / CD

iCloud is $1 a month for 50GB
And it works flawlessly on all IOS devices
Backs up everything from my iPad automatically.

FRED - The scans are automatically stored in "Notes",  while the pdf's are stored in " forScore".
         -  Today "forScore" sent out a bulletin that the next update of f/s will not be supporting Google    Drive & One Drive - something to do with Google & OneDrive API's.  I dont fully understand it.
         -  Yes,  "forScore" recommend backing up regularly to your computer using iTunes.

NORMAN -  Read above.

PINO -  iCloud in AU is $1.49 / month for 50GB.   Apparently "forScore" allows you to backup pdf's selectively chosen to iTunes in your computer.

When you import your scanned music into ForScore, it'll create its own version of the scan so you're definitely duplicating if you leave your original scans in iCloud. I would recommend deleting them if you don't need them for other reasons. You can later recreate and export a PDF from a ForScore score if you need to.

If you want to keep the original scans, you can transfer them from the iPad to your computer using the iPad 'Files' app along with a 'File Provider' app such as FileBrowser or FileExplorer (see link below). Once transferred, you can then delete them from your iPad.

http://forscore.co/kb/files-app/

I use FileBrowser to copy any sheet music I have stored on my Mac to my iPad. The app cost me £5.99 but I also use it to move other files around.

The bottom line is I've no need to use cloud storage at all which obviously means no storage space or sync issues.

I don't know how non-ForScore users transfer their music to their iPad, but I'd imagine this process might well work for them too.

Happy to help if you need any further advice.

Hi Chris.
When I click on  "Files".- there are 2 options - "iCloud" & "On My Ipad".
Clicking on "iCloud" nothing shows. -  Clicking on " On My IPad",  then "forScore" shows.
When I open this,  all my f/s pdf's are there.
My f/s pdf's appear to be in 2 places. -  In " On My IPad". &  "forScore" app.
Both of these are in my iPad Pro.  Am I viewing this correctly.

Hi Alan

You need a 'File Provider' app such as 'FileBrowser' or 'FileExplorer', both available through the Apple App Store. When you install the app, it will appear in the 'Locations' section of the 'Files' app. You'll also need to set up the app to access your computer on your network. The app will take you through that process.

Once you've downloaded the app and you've authorised the File Provider app to access your computer, here's the process to follow to download scores to your iPad using 'FileBrowser' (which is the one I use):

1. Select 'Services' in ForScore (either from the cloud icon or right hand menu)

2. Select 'Download'

3. Select 'FileBrowser' from the 'Locations' section

4. Select 'Network Folders'

5. ForScore will attempt to open FileBrowser and you'll be asked to provide authentication by opening FileBrowser yourself (this is a security feature)

6. Open FileBrowser and select your computer from the 'Remote' list

7, Return to ForScore and your computer will now appear under Network Folders

8. Navigate to the folder on your computer where you store your music and select and download your music.

To upload your scores from the iPad to your computer, follow the above instructions but select 'Upload' at 2. above.

It seems long-winded but, once you've done it a few times, it's really straightforward.

I think by the way you can do all of this via iTunes, but I try to avoid iTunes wherever possible.

Good luck!

Hi Chris.
Thank you for your very detailed explanation.  I've had some family issues to attend to so hence my delay in replying.
I notice you said you avoid using iTunes.  Why is this because I read where a lot of forum members also avoid using iTunes to back up their music PDF,s.

Hi Alan

Well I've had lots of problems with iTunes over the years; crashes, back up failures etc but mainly I find transferring files to and from my iPad (or iPhone) a clunky way of doing things. For example, I've got to take my iPad away from my Genos and plug it via cable into the computer then navigate through what seems an odd interface. Maybe it's more reliable now but, when I plugged it in today, iTunes started to run then crashed and I had to reopen it. The new 'Files' app (together with 'File Browser') on the iPad makes the iPad feel and act like another computer on my network. Just seems easier when you get used to it.

One thing I would add to my earlier post is that what I described only works when your iPad and PC or Mac are on the same network. So if you're away from home, file sharing doesn't work in the way I've described.

And ... at the risk of confusing you ... I should add that you can still use Google Drive with ForScore by using the 'Files' app together with a File Provider app. Google Drive will probably be there in the 'Locations' section (see 3. below). What I'm suggesting below though is to store and back up your files via your computer rather than Google Drive where of course you may end up running out of space.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Hi Chris.
Thanks again for your continued help & explanations.   I'm very new to all this & I've learned a lot since we've been communicating.   I keep reading all the help info. in "forScore & Apple", but sometimes find it conflicting & confusing.   As I like to learn as much as I can before I do anything, One has to be careful of not getting information overload.

When i'm away from home, & if i've backed up my " forScore" files to my laptop using "Filebrowser", can I access them by using a cable from iPad to laptop.

You mention Google Drive & forScore.   Would this also be applicable with any of the cloud drives.

Hi Alan

If you've backed up your ForScore files to your laptop, you won't need to bring them back to the iPad from the laptop because the originals will already be stored in the iPad and thus accessible to ForScore.

On my iPad, as well as Google Drive, I also have Dropbox and iCloud Drive showing under 'Locations' so I could use any of these cloud storage options. I think iCloud is installed by default in the iPad but you would need to install Dropbox and create a Dropbox account if you wanted to use that. I've been using Google Drive because their free storage (15GB) was the largest available. But, as I said earlier, I don't use cloud storage now as all my file movements are direct to and from my computer.
