Hello dear friends! I nedd a little advice from you. The situation is this:
I have an S970 (still on repair.) Today I visited my music store, and they had gotten a used T5/76.
They wnat kroner 19500 for it. That is aproximately the ammount I payed for my S970! It looks in mint condition!
It comes with the original speaker system (a little scrape on the sub), but no stand! No expansion packs or extra memory board.
I loved the tilted screen! But I definitely did not love the size of it. Man, it is BIG!

Here is a little about me as a musician.
I am a hobby musician and song writer, and use the keyboards more or less as they come out of the box. Not much tweaking or fiddling, and I doubt that I will be installing many expansion packs, if any at all. But I use a lot of styles that I have got from this forum. I gig occasionally at senior centers and such, but have no car myself, as I have extremely low visionThe Genos with its touch screen is out of the question, at least untill they can produce a voice guide that is MUCH better then the present one!

My question to you is: Is this a good deal, and should I go for it? Is it worth it when I already have an S970?
I play mostly easy listening, pop and rock, plus Gammeldans. Does T5 have vocal harmony? Forgot to check that!

What I did not like about the T5 is that it has no internal amplifier, so you cannot use only the small speakers. The amp is in the sub. All in all a very beautiful but heavy package!

I almost took the Tyros with me today (it would have broken my back!) but decided I had to sleep on it and talk to you, my good friends first.

Hi Toril,
The S970 is 11.6kg
Genos is 13kg
Tyros T5 61 is 14kg
Tyros T5 76 is 16kg.

One of the things that attracted me to the Genos was it's weight when compared to the T5 76 which I owned at the time. I found the T5 a bit of a struggle to move around and also to fit into my SUV with all my other music gear. At one stage I was considering trying to swap my T5 76 for a T5 61 but then the Genos came along. I know we are only talking about 3 - 4 kg but it does make a difference when you have to lug this gear around by yourself. I would suggest that you consider a T5 61 or funds permitting, a Genos.

Are these Norwegian Krone? Sorry, I don't know where you live.

The 61 key cost almost as much as a new Genos here in the UK if that is the case? £3100.

Maybe instruments are more expensive over in Norway because of taxes?

I have no experience with either the S970 and Tyros but I do have a Genos and have watched millions of videos of the other two instruments.

If it is too much bother losing the internal speakers (you will always need an external amp solution) I personally wouldn't bother as your setup will be far less portable from now on.
Maybe it is worth saving up for a (second hand) Genos instead and keeping the S970 for gigging (when you get it back from repair)?
You can definitely get around the Genos without much use of the screen btw. I hardly use it to be honest. Only to name titles and some editing / tweaking to get performances ready and for that I have lots of time before playing. When I'm playing I hardly ever use the screen and only look at the beat count sometimes. You can also connect an external display if that helps maybe?

Hello Toril, the T5 is a great keyboard, has more and better sounds than the S970, (Sart.1 and 2, live, suite) the feeling of the keyboard is better, than S970, but has no live controls. T5 / 76 is much heavier (15 Kg) than S970 (11.6 Kg). S970 has built-in speakers, so you have return or monitoring nearby. my recommendation is that you stay with the S970, for ease, and integrated speakers, in addition S970, has inherited the effects of reverb and DSP, of the T5. I hope this helps. Greetings. Hans

Yes, the T5 is heavy but it is a wonderful instrument.  Rich sound.  Yes, it does have VH.

If you can get a T5-61 that is approx 2Kg less than the 76 version.    I believe you have a Bose L1 or similar.   That means you can connect the T5 to the L1.   The same way you do now.   If that is the case, you do not need to carry the T5 speakers and sub.

Based on your description, i do not think you need expansion packs or additional memory.   99.9% of your current styles should play on T5 but may need a little bit of tweaking.

If you go for the T5-76 . . . . Maybe you would consider a cart wheel. I do not have one but have been considering buying one for a while.

There are some posts on this forum about cart wheels.  I believe someone mentioned this type of cart:

There is no doubt the T5/76 is a superb, pro keyboard.

Do not forget the great built in human voices and the great choirs ( multipads ), the keys quality and the 500GB HD.

I had the S970 and S975 but finally found my dream arranger, called Tyros5/76 !
It is my intention to keep my T5 as long as possible.

BUT ... I do not need to travel with my arranger. I only use it in my studio.
If I was a gigger I would add an S970 or S975 and keep my T5 for home use though.

Keep in mind the S9XX serie is a baby Tyros4/5 keyboard and important Tyros5 features are missing.😛

All depends on the user's needs and demands but I would always go for the Tyros5.

I do not like the S9XX keybed but ... the S9XX is a nice arranger too but remains a baby Tyros.

Only you will decide for which kb you will go ... make your best choice.

You know the S970 very well but do not forget the T5 will offer you much more extra pro features and a super sound.

Good luck !

Thank you Al. I have the Bose L 1 compact. I almost never use the keyboard as a piano, so I would rather have the 61 keys version, but I feel safer buying it through the music store. Have to sleep on it, as we say here.

19,5k for the T5 is reasonable good price, and if you decide to sell it later, your loss will not be quite low.
If your use is mostly at home, the weight will not be the biggest problem. T5 is a great keyboard, and when get used to it, you'll love the 76 keys.
Just think about when you practice piano lessons. ;)

Good luck whatever you choose.

Toril,

You don't say if you are going to keep the S970.  If NOT... then I would think that carrying the T5 around could be difficult for you.   You always have the option of getting a bigger monitor for the S970 if your poor vision is the main issue.

I think the S970 sounds pretty good, but NOT as good as a Tyros obviously.  Maybe you should write down your priorities on paper so you can look at them.  Pros and cons of both the S970 and the T5.  That will help you sort things out. Don't base your decision on others preferences and then have "buyer's remorse" about your decision later on.  Also, there will always be "another deal" on a Tyros come down the road in the future. So if you pass this one up... there will always be another one.

Hi Toril!
I had a Tyros 5 and it is the best Yamaha has done so far.
You're right in getting a Tyros 5 with tilt screen that I miss on Genos.

Hi Toril, I traded from S770 to T5 earlier this year. I looked seriously at Genos, but the difference from used T5 to new Genos was not worth £2000 to me. I don't really care about a touchscreen.

I don't regret the trade at all, I am enjoying my T5. But there are actually a lot of similarities between the newer PSR and T5 so don't expect huge improvements. Especially I think the differnce from 970 to T5 will be less than from 770 to T5 was.

I was actually in the music store again recently, and when I had a shot at their S770 for old times sake I was quite surprised at how strange and 'small' it felt.

Good things

+ I really like the keybed on the T5.

+ Having 76 keys also gives a sense of freedom, difficult to convey exactly what I mean but it just feels good

+ MS05 Speakers sound good to me

+ I like the large tilting screen, feels easier to use than the S770 one did

+ I like the sliders under the screen for adusting e.g. balance

+ I like the choir voices, ensemble and organ world

+ Brasses and strings are good

+ More DSP available on the styles

+ More expansion memory (came with a 1GB board already fitted)

+ I didn't use the arpeggiator on S770, so don't miss that

+ I don't move it, so the size and weight is not a problem

Less good things

+ Can't save custom DSP parameter settings in a registration. (This is the biggest downside for me)

+ Styles sound a bit less 'punchy' than the S770 did

+ I find it harder to read the black-on-silver button labels compared to the white-on-black ones on PSR

+ I missed the Live Control for bumping up the reverb, but a small Korg NanoKontroller soon fixed that (it sits nicely on the panel)

+ 1GB expansion takes 40 mins to load!

It is not an easy decision to make but only you are the decision maker. Nobody else.

2.5 months ago I had to make the same decision.
I really liked the S975 very much but finally the Tyros5 has won the battle.

Now I can say : the best decision I have ever made.🍺

I may hope I can keep the T5 for many, many years to come.
It is a great, pro machine with a superb sound, fantastic voices and last but not least : very reliable.

Hi Toril,

Wonder if you have decided yet ?
An S9XX or ... the T5 ?

Babette

Toril S

Thank you friends for all the good advice.
I am now the happy owner of a Tyros 5/61!
I intend to keep the S970 when I finally get it back.

Two things to do this weekend.
1. Take the dogs out in the forest.
2. Explore the Tyros!

I suspect that my priorities may be a little changed.
They may look like this:
1. Set up the Tyros.
2. Mumble and fumble till I get it working.
3. Play the Tyros.
4. Play the Tyros.
5. Play the Tyros at night (with a headset!)

And so on :)
