“Maui 5” PA system - review

Well I have been using my new "Maui 5" PA system for a month now as I have a standing weekly one hour gig at my local senior center. It takes a lot of work to keep the act fresh with new material.  I put in a few Christmas tunes this week and each week someone new comes up after the gig and complements the new sound system.

I purchased the system because Don M had recommended it as an alternative to the Bose PA system a year ago here at the forum. I called Don and rechecked with him to make sure the system would handle a 300 capacity room. It does it easily as the volume is only half the way turned up and the keyboard is only set on 75 percent of its volume level with the Style volume set at 70 percent.

I play with keyboard style volume set at 70 percent and the overall Master volume set at no more than 75 percent. I experimented with the system here at the house when I first was setting it up and found that with this setting I could open the Maui5 to its maximum volume and still not have it over load the system. The Maui5 has a warning light system to let you know if you are overloading the unit.

It has the volume power and then some. I also took off the top unit and just used the Bass bottom and found that I could also use my Bass guitar with the unit as a bass amp.

If you want to save a couple hundred dollars or so, give this system a good looking over. That's including the cases for the system too.

Glad it is working out for you Drake.  I actually just bought two more, giving me a total of four.
Now I have two complete setups and don't have to touch my gear at my regular place of work.   There often is something in the other room, and this time of year I have a number of  Christmas parties at various locations.
The Mauis are really good and right at half the price of Bose.  And they have more inputs, e.q., Bluetooth, and deeper bass response.

Drake, it's good to see another convert to the LD Systems MAUI family of speakers. They have excellent technical specs and are great value for money when compared to their competitors. Don has regularly stated his satisfaction with his MAUI'S and now has purchased two more. That is a positive statement in it self.

Drake, from your initial post above I assume you only have one MAUI 5 at the moment. Have you considered getting a second one to run in stereo and also its handy as a backup should one fail during a gig? Failure is unlikely but good for peace of mind.

I have two MAUI 28 G2's at 1000watts RMS per side and if I need more bottom end I use two Behringer B1200D subs. Sometimes I wonder if I should get a MAUI 5 for occasions where I don't need the bigger system.

Hi Murray,

I am not into gigging at this point, I did that when I was much younger and single. I am currently playing just the one weekly, one hour at lunch time. I have on occasions played out for pay but it was for very low pay or just tips (which was fine).

I don't want to book Saturday nites any more, I rather be entertained than be the entertainer these days.  ;D

And if some thing breaks down on the gig .. I just say see ya'll next week. As what just happened with my Bass Amp Combo and it took 5 weeks for the Maui 5 to arrive. I was able to work up a lot of new material while I waited. ;)

Hi friends !

I am running 2 pieces of Fender EXPO=MAUI 11  for 2years and still very, very satisfied.
Perfect weight, installation time and sound quality.
Bit looking at RCF Evox 8 for bigger venues.

I apologise for taking the liberty of intervening in this debate. I also took this amplification system and noticed that with just one element the sound of the piano is really very bad. I wanted to know if with two elements things could improve.

Piano is one of the voices that sounds best in stereo. But f you do not want another speaker to haul around, you could go into voice set and make some user piano voices. Ad more debth and reverb. That will help.

The Yamaha Grand Piano voice is heavily, stereo sampled and sounds very thin and tinny in mono. However, you can download several voices that I modified from https://app.box.com/s/620aqowt5q1vlnvcl7n9 and they are all in mono. You will be amazed at what you hear, especially from the grand piano voice.

Good luck,

Thank you, you have been really kind to allow me to use your work. Actually things change a lot compared to what I have done so far with the original sounds. I believe that with these Sounds modified by you I will finally be able to face the next musical activities in a more serene way.
