How do I avoid feedback noise?

Hello friends!
Yesterday night I was playing at a party, using my S970, my Bose L1 Compact and my sennheiser microphone. I put the mic on the stand and the Bose was behind and to the left of me. I got so much feedback noise that I had to stop using the microphone. It was impossible to crank up the volume a bit. The noise got worse when the mic was placed on the stand. What did I do wrong? How do I avoid this. I have very little experience using a microphone. The little monster almost howled my audience away! :) By the way, the party went well. PSR S970 behaved as expected.

Hi Toril, my Bose L1 compact is 3m back of me, i cut the on board microphone and my microphone volume is always at 90; your smicrophone level must be in green and sometimes in yellow (never red)! I'm using an AKG D77 S; i hope this can help you to the setting for the nex gig; all the best Patrick

The only way this could occur is if one of three volumes were set too high - either the Bose L1, the master keyboard or the mic. Now, I'm guessing, but I would bet you did not dead plug the keyboard speaker system and the mic was right over the keyboard speakers. If this is the case, you would not be the first person that ever made this mistake.

The solution is quite simple. Merely purchase a 1/4-inch, right angle phono plug and plug it into your keyboard's headphone jack, thus shutting off the onboard speakers. It's that easy. The Bose L1 is the only monitor you really need.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Patrick and Gary! Gary, I put a plug in the earphone socket to turn off the onboard speakers. So I must have set the volumes too high. If I use only the Bose I never get any noise. But I wanted vocal harmony and reverb, so I used the keyboard for the microphone. Another thing; my workspace was very cramped. This is a small venue.

One other thing you might check...  If you have the compressor on the mic setup turned up fairly high, when you are not singing and leave it on, it will try to find a signal  and this can easily cause feedback.

Hej Toril!

Hi Toril!
I think you can turn off the speakers in the keyboard in this menu UTILITY CONFIG2.
Then there is no problem with the sound that there is a stereo connector in the headphones jack.
Then you can connect as you have done in the backside of the keyboard.
Greetings Pierre

I always shut the on board speakers off in the utility section of the key board  :) :)
