I don't know how to deal with this......

Hi all,

I keep liking my PSR S750 more and more everyday, I even had a live saxophone performance where I had a PSR-recorded 'song'  (with preset style and own chords arrangements) as the backing track (converted to MP3)   :-)

I am also getting more focus on creating own styles, and I have a question about it, especially about creating the fill-ins for the  Main A-B-C-D variations .

I know that when drums are finishing/closing the fill they do it with the cymbal/ride/crash. So with that cymbal they 'fall' on the first count of the upcoming pattern (in this case the A, B, C or D- variation).

When I play just plain one of the variations (I checked with preset styles ) you hear no cymbal.
When I come in on that variation after a fill then I DO hear the cymbal on the first count.

I tried to create an own fill, create own main rhythm variations, and experimented with cymbal on the first count ((and thought maybe to 'cheat'  or so with sub counts or not quantizing the cymbal in the fill).

It all did not work out.

I could not find any info about it in the 'lessons' on the website, also could not find something about it with the search-options in the forum.

I also don't know if I put my thread in the right section, but if anyone could help me out I would very thankful :-)

Hi CJ,
you have a 4/4 main A
so main A goes 1-2-3-4  5-6-7-8   9-10-11-12   13-14-15-16

then you have a a fill in.(fill in is always 1 measure-4 beats)
so fill in A goes 17-18-19-20

then is main B
which goes 21-22-23-24   25-26-27-28 etc
At which number(beat) should we hear the cymbal?

Is the style you are working with a 4/4 style?
For Drum pattern is good to use the quantize function in my humble opinion.
Drums keep the rythm and the rythm should be correct.
But be carefull with quantization, sometimes it may change your beat rythm.

Well I think I figured out what it bothers you.
I don't know anything about how drums should play so I never had that question  ;D
When you play a style,lets say Main A and in some point you press fill in then the fill in plays
1-2-3-4 and 1 again.
(or it plays 2-3-4  and then 1.It depends in which beat of the main you press the fill in)

So when 1st beat of main A starts again,we can also hear the 1st beat of the fill in.
They play simultaneously.
So the cymbal should be played on the first beat of the fill in.

Hi Panos,

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes I already was thinking in the way that you wrote down.
Unfortunately that did not help.
The 'problem'  is very clear to hear when for example you play a random preset style without accompaniment, just the drums/rhythm.

Just play one of the variations A B C or D. You hear the plain rhythm, no cymbal on the first count of the variation, no matter how long you play/repeat the variation. Now, press one of the fill-in buttons, and no matter to what variation you go after that fill, every variation then starts with a cymbal on the first count.

When I create my own fill and put a cymbal on the first count of that fill, then it still is sounding on the first count of the fill, which is not meant to be sounding.

Hm, I don't know how I should explain it better, let me think about it. More suggestions welcome :-)

oh I see....
so the preset patterns do that thing and is fine
but not the parts that we record?

I have checked just a preset pattern in my previus reply.
I do not usually record difficult drum patterns by myself.
Sometimes I extract them from a midi file of a song or use the assembly feature.
I wiil give it a try to record something to see what happens.

Maybe anybody else knows anything about this?

Ok I think I found how to do it.
Upload the attached style on your keyboard.
The main A and fill in A is the yamaha preset of Hard Rock Style.
The main B and fill in B is a.... great composition made by me  ;D

When you play the 2 parts and press fill ins you can hear the cymbal at the first beat.
But is not.
Is the very last part of the 4th beat of the fill in just before it ends.
Our ears are not good enough to listen to the difference and we believe that is on the fisrt beat.

How to check this:
Press fill in B and go to style creator.
Go to the last tab called EDIT.
Navigate down with the B button to the left of your screen untill you hear the drum sounds one by one after some measures which got the midi events/parameters first.
Before End you can hear the cymbal
It plays at the 4th beat at time 1900.
(I know a nice movie called 1900 with excellent music but I dont know if it is milliseconds or something for sure :D)

I have played it in the first beat as a normal person would have done I guess
and then at the edit menu I cut and paste it at the 4th beat at 1900 time.
I saw in fill in A which is made by Yamaha that it was there so I did the same.

I think we tried it at somewhat the same moment :-)
I also just found out about the edit screen and putting the cymbal on 1900 and it worked !!!! I wanted to write the solution here but you already did :-)

hahaha you wellcome CJ!
Now I think I will remember from now on how a cymbal sounds like.
So thank you for that my friend and I agree that the post of this forum can help other people too.
