I have two older models of Yamaha PSR keyboards  Brand new owner of the Yamaha PSR-340 Keyboard & the PSR-500.   Has anyone successfully done the change over from the floppy disc drive to the USB conversion on either of these two?   If so-could you please share any information and part numbers that were used.  Thanks for all the helpful info!

Welcome to the PSR Tutorial Forum, @Lloyd1959!

What is the reason that you still buy such old keyboards or want to work with them?

Presumably very few users use PSR models that are over 25 - 30 years old. (The PSR-340 is from 1999, the PSR-500 from 1991.) And probably very few forum members have experience of replacing the floppy drive with a USB floppy emulator.

By the way, I just saw in the PSR-500 manual that this model didn't have a floppy drive. Did you mean the PSR-S500 (from 2006)? But this model already has a USB-to-Device terminal where you can connect a USB stick directly.

As far as I know, GOTEK is the best known brand of such USB floppy emulators. Many such devices can only work with specially prepared USB sticks, i.e. the sticks have to be formatted with a special tool into many small partitions (the size of a floppy disk, e.g. 1.44 MB). You also need a special tool to fill them with data, because normally only the first of these numerous partitions is displayed on the PC.

However, as far as I know, there are also USB floppy emulators that work with normally formatted USB sticks (e.g. FAT32 format), and the individual virtual floppy disks are simply created using FOLDERS on the USB stick. This of course makes working with such floppy emulators much easier.

● Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that, and - just did it.
● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)
