Foot pedals- don't seem to work

    Have checked with manual re Sustain and SAV -   Because being new'
thought keyboard it would have default setting. Changed cables around.  Still nothing.   Hopefully someone can help.  Really love keyboard -  but it really is testing me.   Thanks  Norm.

did u check pg 106 in the OM?  there is also a polarity option in the menu section under assignable/foot pedals

Thanks for the reply Gene.   Checked the settings  - both sustain and Articulation2 are shown.   Played a Big Band  and a ballad  -  thought I would get some kind of voice.  No luck.  Not sure what to expect.  -Thanks gain Gene.

What foot pedal are you using. Is it a Yamaha one.

What keyboard do you have, and what sustain pedal? Always connect the pedal before you turn on the keyboard, and do not touch it until the keyboard is fully operational. Try with the piano voice. Sustain comes when you press the pedal down, and stops when you lift your foot from it. If it works the other way around, the polarity is wrong. Most pedals have a polarity switch these days, just toggle that to the other side. It it still does not work, you must go into the munu and see what the pedal is set up to do. Registrations can change pedal settings, so it may be that the pedal is set to do something other that sustain, like triggering fills, changing registration buttons for instance.

Hi okeedokee,

Please check whether the "Registration Sequence" function is switched on or off (Menu > Regist Sequence). If it is switched ON, you can only use the pedals assigned there (one or two) for this functions (Regist+ and/or Regist-).

To use the pedals normally, you must either set the "Registration Sequence" function to "OFF" or set the desired pedal(s) to "OFF" in the "Registration Sequence" display. (You can also use "Assignable Buttons" to toggle the "Registration Sequence" forward/back.)

Thank you Chris--   Did all you asked-  Everything was in Off MODE.  Checked both pedals  -  no  switches -  even took bottom cover off -  nothing  -   Both are Yamaha pedals.  Is there another way to check them? Tried using Big Band styles.  Now not to sure what to expect?    How do they work?   Thanks again everbody  Did notice the plus and minus sighns -  They were on plus

The sustain pedal is just an on and off switch. When you press it down it gives you sustain, or does something else you have set it to do. When you lift your foot from the pedal, it stops working. Do you have another keyboard or piano that you can check them on? Maybe you have a music store near by, and can get them to test them for you?

Hi Norm,

What do you mean by "SAV"? Do you mean how to SAVE the Pedal settings?

For the Sustain Pedal:
- Connect a pedal (= a momentary foot switch) to Pedal jack #1. It is best to do this before powering on the keyboard.
- Power on the keyboard. Do not press the pedal until the Home display appears.
- Press "Direct Access" button, then press the pedal. This will call up the Assignable display. If this does not work, the pedal is not suitable or defective.
- Make sure that the function "Sustain" is set for Foot Pedal 1 in the Assignable display. Make sure that the desired parts (on which the Sustain pedal should act) are ticked in the detailed setting (at the very bottom of the display). Usually the parts Right1, Right2 and Right3 should be ticked here.
- Close the Assignable display by pressing the "Exit" button or touching the "X" icon. This will save the current Assignable settings into the so called "System Setup".
- Choose a Piano voice, e.g. for Right1, and test whether the Sustain pedal works as desired. If it works "reversed", call up the Assignable display again (as described above), touch the Menu icon there and change the Polarity for this pedal. Then close the Assignable display again using the Exit button or X icon to save the setting.

If necessary, repeat what has been described to select a specific function for a second pedal.

It is best to memorize these Pedal settings at least to one Registration. This way you can quickly restore these Pedal settings later.


Note that the Pedal settings can be changed at any time by accessing Registrations that contain different Pedal settings. The only way to safely maintain the current Pedal settings (for the current session) is to use the FREEZE function:

- Press "Direct Access" > "Freeze" button to enter Freeze settings.
- Make sure only "Pedal" is ticked and close the Freeze display to save this setting.
- Make sure the Freeze button is OFF.
- Make the desired Pedal settings (e.g. by calling up a corresponding Registration).
- Press the Freeze button to turn ON the Freeze function.
- Now the Pedal settings can no longer be changed by Registrations during the current session.

Hi Norm

Just a quick point, sustain and super articulation are not available on all voices.  It maybe that you are trying the pedals when you don't have suitable voices selected.

   Hi -  Chris, Toril S - Bill  -   Thanks for your knowledge  -   Toril S talked about checking the foot pedals on another machine.I Guess I had a 89BRAIN Fart.  My old machine is in the back.    Checked them out.  #1 for Sustain  was OK working good.   Checked #2 -  on Sustain -  was Okeedokee.   Tried #2 on old machine -   could not hear anything.   I think i'l spend more getting to know my new keyboard .  Thanks everyone for all the help.!!!!    -     Norm
