Hi

What if i made my own midi file would that work like a purchased midi file.
If you can play keyboards why not make your own midi files and then convert it.
It is not that hard to make intos's Mains  and endings as you play them and you can edit before putting into stylemaker.
If you made a short version of a song and just have the intro joined to a couple of bars for each part etc would the stylemaker still work it out into sections? Just a thought. :)

Are you taking about using the new Midi to Style software?

Yes, I see no reason why you could not record your own MIDI file then use this software. Perhaps this would actually be an easier way to make styles compared to the onboard style creator?

I think that would work perfectly as long it's a midi, no need to do much with it. You might even be able to put extras in from riffs ect if they are midi and convert from audio files to midi to add. There are plenty of free midi packs available, obviously you need to add them in something like Cuebase first. Saying that why use Midi to Style as Genos will save it as a style anyway via inbuilt style creator, kinda defeats the object.

John,

Yes I've done that, but used StyleMagic to create the styles.

However, if you just want to record a finished song, there is no point in recording a midi file, and then create a style from the midi file, and then make another recording using the style (just use the original midi file). But if you want to do some live playing of the song and you want to put in the time and effort, then its a good way of creating some quite complex song-specific styles of your own..

Of course it's possible to create your own midi and then, by using MidiToStyle, create a style from it. But I'm afraid that's not that simple as it might look -because good midi (that would serve as basis for a style) is not that easy to make. And here I agree with Des O: if someone is able to create such good midi file (that is, multi-record live playing), then he should have no problem to create a style with Style Creator. The thing is, style is actually a midi song divided into small chunks.
I see no reason why would someone record (playing perfectly) the whole song several times, if one can simply "put the song together" in Style Creator? The opposite is the case: once you have good style, you can easily make a good midi song.

MidiToStyle is for sure nice addition if you have good enough midi files. But if someone is not already familiar with Style Creator, then the result will probably be disappointing.

Very impressive Henni what is BiaB?

Henni is talking about "Band-in-a-Box", it's an "Intelligent Music Accompaniment Software":  ;)

Tx for clarifying Chris.

Hi Des O.

This is a Yamaha forum. Read more about my discussing this here should you wish.

I've posted many of my creations on this forumn as well - just search for some of my latest posts. I present this purely as another interesting way of creating music. I've owned many Yamaha's before & liked every single one of them.

Cheers,

Good shout that one Henni. I forgot about that one.

I have only begin converting a MIDI to a style, still have not had the time to finish it.

But in the time I have been working with the new MIDI to Style program, I plan on taking several of my custom styles and making a short midi file with the intro that I play. Then I will take that intro put into my custom styles. So that is another project I have on my plate now.

The main thing I always told the guys in the band, "as long as we start and end the song together, nothing else matters".

Hi John --

Yep, I plan to do this. I wish I had the MIDI to Style program when I did all of those conversions from DJX-II and MOX. Everything began life as a Standard MIDI File (SMF).

As Bogdan sez, it's harder to create a good style from scratch than most people think. That's why I started with patterns from DJX-II and MOX. There are also MIDI libraries and MIDI composition tools which would be useful for style creation. I'm thinking "UJAM to MIDI to Style."

Take care -- pj

Hello!

My thoughts and hopes for Yamaha's MIDI to Style program.  I'm hoping that as time goes by we will learn those certain ideal elements to look for in a MIDI file. Obviously some MIDI's will convert better than others. I think in time after using the program one will see which midi's might be the best candidate for re-creation. I'm thinking simpler songs might convert better than a complex song. Isn't it ironic?  We have spent years and years searching the web for good style files. Now we need to search more for good midi's to make these good styles?  Something seems wrong here.  You watch and see........ some MIDI file peddlers are gonna prey on the newbies.  They are gonna re-label ancient useless files as "Style Ready". Let the buyer beware.

I'm counting on my friends here to keep sharing their style making experience as I will too. Collectively we can find the best and perhaps easier methods to do this. I feel like I have a bunch of new tools now, but aren't sure where to go with them. There's a lot to be said for figuring out things for yourself, but I also know when I need help. I'd rather be part of a good team than solo all the way........... -charley
