PSR Style Database/Midi Database - Version 5.0 released

Hello everybody,

there is a new version (V5.0) of the PSR Style Database/Midi Database program.

As many of you already know, the program is for organizing and managing collections of style files and midi files.
(The program supports "English" and "German" language).

In addition to style and midi files the new version can also handle Yamaha multipad files (Pad Database).

2 mains and 4 fills on some styles?
There are 2 fills which will not be triggered, probably an attention to user to check for that style. Or could it be an empty section (?!)

A good question.
Sections in the style file a defined using midi markers with specific test like MAIN, FILL IN, BREAK,...
My program just looks for these markers and displays the result in the "Variatons" column.

Very long time ago there were keyboard models which had only two MAIN sections.
Styles for these keyboards usually had 4 fills named

   FILL IN AA
   FILL IN AB
   FILL IN BA
   FILL IN BB

I assume that these fills are played when changing the MAIN sections in the order given by the two charachters in the name. But I don't know for sure.
This may explain styles with 2 MAIN and 4 FILL IN.

At some time the name of the fills has changed to

   FILL IN AA
   FILL IN BB
   FILL IN CC
   FILL IN DD

Most styles with 4 MAIN and 4 FILL IN have fills with these new names.

Now looking in my style collection I also found styles with more than 4 fills like

   FILL IN AB
   FILL IN BA
   FILL IN AA
   FILL IN BB
   FILL IN CC
   FILL IN DD

I do not know what the keyboards do in this case. This would require some testing.
As the section control sy*** of the Genos has only 4 fills defined, I assume that the keyboard has only 4 slots to store fills.
Maybe the other two are ignored.

In addition to this there are also styles with more than one BREAK section

   Break AA
   Break BB

This is also an interesting point to explore.

So far I found no empty section in a style file.

Thanks Peter for your kind and good explanation.

However, I suggest to search for data length in style section. If the section contains data, you can count it, if not it does not matter the existing section (IMO).
One more thing to say, Yes, indeed, I played some time ago an Yamaha keyboard, very old one, with some red numbers which I think it had a lot of fills. For those keyboards which does not share the same new Yamaha's style engine, with the fill behind main variation, it could be a reason to count even the fills which does have data but it is not behind a main variation.

BTW, someone could tell me which Yamaha keyboard had in the past more than 4 fills? It is an old old keyboard, I think 30-35 years ago?! I really don't remember.

Of course I can check if a fill in section is empty, but, as I said, I never found an empty section in a style file so far.

I also assumed that the order of the style sections in the style file is arbitrary. They are identified by the markers. E.g. I have (commercial) style files where all MAIN sections are defined first, followed by all FILL IN sections.

Hi Peter,

As far as I know, in the Preset Styles of the current models the "Break" section  (which is triggered by the BREAK button) is called "FILL IN BA". This is probably the reason that the PSR Style Database program shows current styles as "4M 3I 3E 5F 0B" in the Variations column (4 Main Variations, 3 Intros, 3 Endings, 5 Fill Ins, 0 Breaks).

I think it would be better if the "FILL IN BA" was recognized as a BREAK, so instead of "5F 0B" it would show "4F 1B".
