Music Finder View Program

I'm having some problems installing Michael Bedsem's 'Music FinderView program on my Windows 10 64bit PC.

The download instructions don't work with Windows 10.  The downloaded program is in two parts; one, the main program loads ok, but the update program will not copy to the installed programmes location, C:\program files (x86).  On Windows 10 this operation is banned.

Does anyone know of a 'work around' or if a special Windows 10 version is available >

I had some similar problems when installing and contacted Mike. This is what he had me do and it worked fine for me. I' m sure Mike will answer you as well.

Two things to try:

1) Redo the the installation:

First:
•   Use Start/Control Panel/Uninstall and remove all exiting versions.
•   Download the musicfinderview full package (version 1.9.4).
•   Unzip to an empty folder.
•   Right click on Setup.exe and select Run as Administrator. When prompted, please accept the default file location, and do not allowreplacing newer files with older ones.

Then, update to the latest version:

•   Download the musicfinderview_update package http://psrtutorial.com/MB/musicfinderview.html
•   Unzip to an empty folder.
•   Copy the files to the C:\Program Files\MusicFinderView folder. When prompted, please allow the operating system to replace older files.

2) If problems remain, from Appendix D of the manual:

•   If installed, use Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\ Program Files (x86)\MusicFinderView folder and mark the .exe file to run as an administrator by:

•   Right clicking the program and select Properties.
•   Under the compatibility tab, select Run This Program as an Administrator.
•   Click Apply and OK.

3) If Error message: "Could not open logfile C:\WINDOWS\ST6UNST.000"
•   Try deleting the file ST6UNST.EXE in the directory C:\WINDOWS .

The downloaded zip file of the update V3.1.3 does NOT contain an (automatic) update "program". Just unzip the zip file into a new, empty folder on your PC. Then select all update files (Cmd+A), copy it to the Windows clipboard (Cmd+C   or  right-click>Copy), open the program folder of MusicFinderView ("C:\Program Files (x86)\MusicFinderView") and paste the copied files from the clipboard into that folder "MusicFinderView" (Cmd+V   or  right-click>Paste).

In the first message ("Replace or skip files"), confirm overwriting the older files in that folder by clicking on "Replace files at destination". In the second message ("Access to the destination folder was denied"), check the box "Repeat for all current elements" and click on the button "Continue". Now all update files should be properly copied into the MusicFinderView program folder.

Finally start the updated program via the existing link on the Windows desktop or via the Windows Start menu (by clicking on the "MusicFinderView" folder and then clicking on the "MusicFinderView" link).

Many thanks to Rick d and overover for their replies.  I intend to study their two solutions separately.

Ive started with Rick d's method.  Before I do perhaps I aught to specify my Windows version.

My System:
OS Name - Microsoft Windows 10 Home.
Version - 10.0.19042 Build19042
System Type - X64 - Based PC

Results: His Section 1 ran ok except at the end The error message "You'll need admin permissions..."
              so on to Appendix D of the manual...
* "Right click the program and mark to run as administrator."*
Under the 'Compatibility Tab' to run this program as Administrator"

There is no 'Compatibility Tab'.  There is a 'Security Tab' with some relevant controls.
Clicked that.
                (i)  to change permissions click 'EDIT'
                      No group or user has  Write Access whichever you choose; and all options are
                      'greyed out' as not available.
                 (ii)  For special permissions or advanced settings click 'ADVANCED'
                        again no Group or user has write access no matter which user type you
                        choose, and again all options 'greyed out', again as not available.

Its as though this solution used to work on earlier versions of windows, but have now been altered in the latest versions by Mr Microsoft - Hope I'm wrong !

I will check out the solution, kindly suggested by overover, and post the result, next.

Hi Simplorer,

Windows 10 automatically requests administrator permissions, if they are required, via the so-called "User Account Control" (UAC). So if you get such a message, click either "Yes", "OK" or "Continue".

First of all, of course, you have to install the "full version" of the program (V1.9.4). This should also run if you click the corresponding shortcut in the start menu or double-click the shortcut on the desktop.

Then you copy the unzipped files of the update (V3.1.3) into the mentioned program folder of "MusicFinderView" and confirm the appearing messages (to overwrite older files), as I described above. It is not more than that. :)

I also have window 10 64 bit, but mine is the Pro version, but that shouldn't make any difference.

If you still have no luck, Mike will chime in when he has time.

Overover is pretty knowledgeable, try following his instruction as well.

I have tried to utilise the procedure kindly outlined by overover but again, I'm afraid the second part of the procedure didn't work for me.
I have to say that the original file installs and executes fine.  Again its the update file that refuses to write the update to the
C:\program files (x86) directory.

I downloaded the update file to an empty directory then used

CNTL +A - to select the update file data, then
CNTL +C - To copy the above data to the clipboard, then
Navigated to the C: program files (x86)/MusicFinderView program then
CNTRL +V to Paste the 'update' files to the above executable program

This is what happened:

"The destination has 77 files with the same name" (we are advised to overwrite with new data)
selected the dialog box item which said:
"Replace the files in the destination"

A new dialog box then appeared:
"You need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder"
in the same dialog box was a check item - clicked on "Do this for all current items" then clicked "Continue"

The result was that the above dialog box was repeated - "you need to provide admin..."

I'm sure that this procedure will work for many users, but unfortunately not for me.

Hi Simplorer,

please check the type of your Windows account:

- Right-click in the Start Menu button and select "Settings".
- Click on "Accounts" to open the page "Your info".
- Below your Windows username is either "Local Account" or an email address (if you are signed in to a Microsoft account).

- And right below it should say "Administrator". Is this the case with your computer? (If not, what does it say instead of "Administrator"?)

Many thanks for all who responded to my problem. !
I was just checking my Task manager to see if MusicFinderView was running : it was not.
BUT
I remembered that I had DOUBLE clicked the MusicFinderView entry in c:/program to view the contents then copied...
This of course would execute the program and mean that the program was RUNNING when the copy command was executed as Johan had indicated.
I copied the update file with a SINGLE click to just SELECT the file before copying and it worked !

as installing the current version of MusicFinderView on Windows 10 is not so easy, I created a new installation packet.
This packet will install the full version 3.1.3 in one step.

Please uninstall all previous versions of MusicFinderView first.

Thank you very much for creating this full installer pack, Peter! For users who are not "windows specialists", this full installer is certainly a welcome help.

By the way: It would be good if your installer were also linked on the Psrtutorial download page of MusicFinderView. Maybe you could get in touch with Roger Brenizer or Joe Waters about this.

of course, there should be a link on the Psrtutorial download page of MusicFinderView.
I am currently updating my website to add a MusicFinderView page. If I have finished I will ask for adding a link.
