Hello everyone.

I am providing the sound and music for our Little Theatre's Dramatic Reading of Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol, and mostly it's going well.  But I've run out of ideas for some Eerie/spooky music for when Marley makes his appearance.  I'm told that this will be posted on Youtube, so I'd rather prefer something that is in public domain.  Can anyone give me a suggestion?

Assuming you're already using the chromatically rising diminished chords ??

You know, that probably would have worked quite well.  I simply hadn't thought of it.

Well, it had to be in by the beginning of November.  So, remembering that the theme 'Dies Irae' is often used for that type of music, I did my own take on it.

But I still appreciate the suggestion.  If/when the requirement comes up again, I'll have another tool in the toolbox for it!

Could you please post it so we can listen?

Ummm, yes??

Please don't expect too much.  Remember, I had run out of ideas, wasn't feeling particularly creative, and this piece was meant to be low background music for the scene.

I wanted to give the Director choice, so this file contains the Dies Irae theme:
1. on a (IIRC) Contrabass, no chords
2. Detuned Violin, no chords
3. Chorded theme, violins
4. Violins with Contrabass, no chords.

I was expecting the Director to come back and request something different, if he needed it.  I'll post the scene here, once he puts it out on youtube. -- I haven't seen it yet, myself.

(Headphone users watch the volume, I recorded it loud.)

To make me feel a little better, I'm happy with what I came up with for the request of "a Christmas song, Victorian Period, Harp.'   My harp version of Greensleeves (aka What Child is This).

Both files were recorded on the Genos, and no effects were added post.

Hi Adan,

you can always get ideas from youtube.
Most of the compositions on the video below are of course far for being spooky or scary
(probably the uploader just noticed some parts with music tension)
but on the comments people give some ideas too:

Operas also have nice spooky parts played by the orchestra when there is tension on the scene and they were the first "movie themes".
And of course they are in the public domain.
"Silent night" played in a minor key on a de-tuned piano sound gives me also chills ;D

Congratulations for adding music to a book reading :)

Yes, Panos.  Youtube (and the whole internet in general) can be a wonderful resource.  But for some reason I got hooked on the Dias Irae theme.  Too tired to think properly, I guess.

Yeah, it turned out to be a bit more than a 'dramatic reading'.  When I was asked to get involved with the sound, it was pitched as a radio-play.  But apparently somebody decided that if it was going on youtube, it HAD to be a video, not just audio.  So the director bought a greenscreen in order to put in backgrounds.  Personally, I couldn't stand the idea of having the actors appearing on stage with books, so in addition to the Music and Sound Effects, I took on the task of providing tele-prompting.  There still wasn't enough room to really act, but at least now they could move a bit, and use their hands.

Due to Covid 19, everyone was filmed separately, and the Director is currently in the task of splicing everything together into a cohesive whole.  I hope that it works out well.  Covid 19 has been hard on our small Little Theatre group.

(I believe that I will also be three different off-stage voices due to not having enough people to fill those roles.)

Pretty good timing, I guess.

All music you hear was done by yours truly, on the Genos.

PS. The Eerie music makes an appearance at 19:45 or so, and comes back in a few times in the following scenes.
