Going off on a MIDI tangent!

I've been thinking.  Maybe not to good of an idea but here goes.  When I was into the 740 in a big way I found it was possible to trigger a MIDI signal at the same time Playing the keyboard.  Now if we can get the latency to work for us that would mean we could layer the MIDI instrument with the PSR instrument.  With xpand 2 you can stack 4 instruments  on the software side so adding to the 2 or 3 sounds on the kb you would be able to have a huge assortment of sounds available.  With additional computer power you could  stack several vsts to create eve more complex sounds.  So.. why buy a sx model when for a couple hundred $ you could expand your sound palette even more.  In case the latency problem couldn't be solved you could simple play the vst's as stand alone programs on a MIDI controller and have a huge variety of sounds.  Your thoughts would be kindly appreciated.

This is a good idea, and a number of people are doing this successfully.

Connect the 'To Host' USB to the PC to transfer the MIDI output, run a VST host like Cantabile on the PC, and connect the PC audio out back to the keyboard AUX IN.

If you use the ASIO4ALL driver on the PC, there is pretty much no latency.

There's a bit of fiddling with settings to make sure the keyboard is sending out the MIDI, and the host is using the right input/output devices, but it does all work!

Thanks Derek.  Realize I'm still using a psr3000.  This would certainly add to my capabilities big time.  Wondering though, do you think I would need a audio interface or if just the cables would work?

Your mileage may vary ...

I've tried plugging straight into the PC headphone out, and also tried an external USB DAC (Cambridge Audio DACMagic). There was some difference using the DAC, but not a huge amount. You certainly don't need anything more than just a basic cable to get started.
