Hello :) I often use Windows media player to play MIDI files just to identify the file before I rename it. I always to the naming of files on the computer. The sound is not good when the MIDI file is played back på W. media player, but it is good enough to recognize it. I wonder, why do the computer never play the drums in the MIDI files? Just curious.

Probably because Windows by default uses Roland-compatible MIDI voices in its internal MIDI synthesizer. It was a big winning score for Roland to have Microsoft officially license their MIDI synthesizer technology.

Check out Start->Control Panel->MIDI mapper to see if you can direct your MIDI stream to one of your external Yamaha boards. Then you should be able to get them played on there, on your XG-compatible hardware synthesizer.

Yamaha used to sell (or give away in some bundle) a XG-compatible synthesizer for Windows, but it is no longer available as it was opening security holes to attacks from the Internet.

I'm not posting this from Windows, so I can't give you details, I only post what I remember. Maybe someone else could fill out the details?
