i just upgraded to a Tyros 5 from a T3,T4 now T5 and sold my Korg PA4X and man... I missed my Tyros and I cant tell you guys how much I love learning from you guys and gals here You folks are amazing !!!
Does anyone know :
I buy a lot of midi files on the Yamaha Music Soft site but for the life of me ....why can't they show the actual style file they used for that midi file. Only the song shows on the main screen ? I had a Roland arranger and it would show on the main screen all the style, pads ,Phrases chd 1 and 2  used and the style used and the song name. The midi would load in everything without having to go in the mixer to see the instrument and also it does not show in the mixer the style volume and info for that particular style in the style area on the home screen(only the channel parts show and which instrument) .And even stranger when I download a midi file by on of the performers on this site and it shows it was produced with that instrument ie.. Tyros,Prs instrument or even a tyros 5  originally made with Tyros 5...it does not load it showing the style , Rhythm 1 and Rhythm 2 , chd 1 and 2, bass,Left, right or Phrases. If the midi file was made with the same as I have....why does it not line it all up so I don't have to dig
around to find the correct style  and parts? Please help and I would sure love your responses .
I hope this is not boring ...just confused
Than you in advance
Gary

Hi Gary,

a MIDI file does NOT necessarily have to be programmed based on a Style.

Many MIDI files are programmed "from the scratch". That means, the programmer did NOT use any existing Style.

However, some commercial MIDI file manufacturers (like ---> https://www.d-o-o.de/index.php?&lang=en ) program both MIDI files AND the maching Styles.

Furthermore, when a MIDI file is recorded by playing with a Style, the resulting MIDI file does NOT contain any parts of the Style. In the MIDI file are ONLY the Notes actually played during MIDI recording.

IF such a MIDI recording (by using a Style) is made directly on a Tyros, Genos or PSR-S, some informations of the used Style (its Main Variations, Fill-Ins and so on) are written as Sy*** into the MIDI file. But this has nothing to do with the Notes actually stored in the MIDI file.

Therefore, it is an exception if you can get exactly the Style which was used for programming a certain Midifile. Even rarer is that when playing back a (commercial) MIDI file the originally used (preset) Style is displayed.

Best regards,
Chris

Thank you mucho for your helpful response . It just seems like if something is produced on the same instrument and the same style on board  for both instruments,it would at least recognize up on the main page where it shows  the style being used for a particular song ie.. 6/8 country ballad sty .

The point is that a commercial MIDI file is probably *not* based on one of the preset styles on the instrument. It's been programmed from scratch. Any simlilarity to an preset style is probably co-incidence.

Hi
When you record a song on a Yamaha keyboard using a style, the style you use is recorded in the resulting midi file in sy*** format.
This is contained in the information section at the start of the midi as per example below:

001:2:0000          Sy***=F0 43 73 01 51 05 00 03 04 00 00 2C 28 F7  Style: GENOS/T2-3-4-5/3K/900/700,910,710,970   60sOrganBallad

You can examine this in Michael's Mixmaster which translates the sy*** to English. Many on line midis purchased or created with a Daw or another brand will not have this information.
