Help with modifying OTS

I'm looking for advice please on changing the voice parameters on the OTS on my Tyros 5 (76 key).

I've had the Tyros 5 for 3 months or so and have yet to fully delve into the onboard styles. Whenever I decide to have a play, I'm invariably disappointed by the OTS voices which to my ears sound flat and I give up after a short while and move onto something else.

I know I can bring the voices to life. I generally lift the individual voice reverb to something like 58 and maybe change the Effect reverb to 'Large Hall 3. I also raise the individual parts' volumes so they're better defined against the style volume. The resultant effect is (again to my ears) is magical. But it's a bit of a chore and it takes the edge off the mood of exploration.

To ensure I don't have to do it all over again the next time I want to use the style, I save each new OTS to a registration button and then save the registration bank with the same name as the style and save it to my hard drive. So in effect I now have two styles: the original preset and a 'new preset' with the amended OTS voices.

My idea is to do this process for all the onboard styles. Altering each style and saving the new registration takes me about 3 minutes. However, since there are 539 presets, I know that's going to be a lot of work! But the benefit will be that I'll be able to select any style (via its registration) and play the OTS to my satisfaction instantly.

So my question is, is there a quicker way of doing what I'm doing? Or, perhaps, is there a better way of achieving my main goal - which is to instantly access a preset style with more enhanced OTS lead voicing?

Hope I've explained that clearly and that someone can help.

First, you don't have to save it as a registration, you can save it as a user style, but I'm not sure that will save you any time. And styles aren't as flexible as registrations.

Second, you should look at Murray Best's Registration Manager, which will convert OTS to registrations. It will also let you make global changes to a batch of registrations, which might be useful with your reverb settings.

Take your time slowly if you are not using your keyboard for gigs or something.
Why editing all preset styles in all foldres?
If you ask me, I don't even remember what's in there and I 've got my keyboard 4 years now.
I write this because there are not just the preset styles, there are also thousand other styles that  we might download (expansion packs, song styles etc)
We cannot edit them all the way we like and we don't really have to because we ain't gonna use and play them all.
Each time you find a style that you like for a song just rename and save it as a new style with its own OTS and multipad to a folder on the usb stick.
I don't use registrations much because if you rename or move a folder on the usb stick,
you got to make adjustments again and again.

Is there a reason you're not just altering the OTS settings to your liking and resaving them?

Thanks all for the replies.

I had looked at Murray's registration manager but I couldn't see how I could do a batch change of reverb etc per voice. I'll have another look at that.

Yes I get what you're saying but I'm curious to know what the Yamaha experts have put together for the preset styles. Maybe I'll only find the odd gem and if that's true then it's possibly taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. I'm very conscious of the vast number of third party styles out there and I've got many myself but, for reasons already mentioned, I've hardly tried any!

I'm still trying to get my head around whether the registration route is the right one. My thinking was to create a registration using the (adjusted) voices a Yamaha style on for example a big band song. Then, when I want to try out a third party big band style, I can substitute that style for the registration style, switch off OTS and put 'Freeze' on. That way I'm testing the third party style with my adjusted voices for that genre. That principle would then work with any third party style.

Maybe I'm over-thinking but I'll plough on and see how it turns out. Thanks again.

In my opinion Yamaha put the preset OTS there knowing that users can edit them the way they like.
And if they don't wish to edit them they have to sound just good enough.
I can find some factors that OTS maybe sounds different to any user, considering:

a)The player is using the onboard speakers or other speakers or headphones?
b)The player is using the "Touch" button or maybe not?
(also there are many settings on touch button)
These 2 options affect the loudness of the style compare to the loudness of the OTS.

c)The player is using the Mixing Console Equalizer or not?
This function at least to my insrument has affect to all styles and all voices in keyboard.
So I guess they prefered a more flat and "mood" preset equalizer settings because if the user changes the settings of the equalizer some organs in styles will sound with a lot of "bass" sound and some will sound too "high" and "squeaky".

Also they must have a variety of organs in their styles.
e.g they won't just use to all styles that require a piano sound, lets say the S.Art! Grand Piano because maybe is their best piano sound. They put another piano sound to the style.

Anyway, that is why I suppose most of us just change the preset style and OTS to our personal taste and take the 3 minutes time as you said to do this.
Once we change and save it, we don't have to deal with those changes again,
unless we want to use it in another song so we edit it again and again ;D
To some weird people like me, the same style with the same OTS in a different song could be kind of boring. :(
Likely soooooo many options there!! :)

I am so happy that I finally learned to do this on the keyboard. The same style can aound a lot different with some other settings.
And, my choice of voices is not always clear and logical to others, but to me it is :)

"logical" is Earth to be a flat place so we don't fall.
"logical" is that a heavier object than the air will never be able to fly.
"logical" in past centuries music could be that this composition is nothing more than "awful screaming sounds" and not something that showed a way that music could be written in the future.

The only "logical" song that I  can remember by the way Torill, is from Supertramp  :P

Music is a creative expression and NOT logical at all.  It's whatever makes you HAPPY!
