Why 2 Drumkits??

Hello!

When I edit the drums in a style I sometimes see 2 drum kits. The drums on channel 10 are usually the main kit used. The drums on channel 9 are usually the extra percussion like castanets and woodblocks ect. Usually it's the instruments in channel 9 that are the nasty ones I need to get rid of to make my older styles sound better.  Can only a drumkit be in channel 9?  And what about channels 11-16?  Can any voice go in any channel?  Or are there only certain voices that can be a pad channel voice?  Recently I remember something like this in a style creation post that I can't seem to find now.......... Please shed some light on this!!  -charley

Charley. Personal preferences...I usually put BRUSHES in Ch9 and there are times I reduce Ch10 to Zero.
There have been times I put Brushes in Ch10.
You have fully volume adjustment on all Style channels.

hi rattley,
In channel 10 (Rhy2) we can only use DrumKit voices. Channel 9 (Rhy1) is not limited on that. In Rhy1 we can also use percussion that we can not in Rhy2: for example Xylophone, which is a normal voice -normal voice is a voice where pitch changes for each note (drums don't do that).

Rhy1 is similar to channels 11-16. The difference is, Rhy1 also accepts DrumKit's (which channels 10-16 don't). In that sense, Rhy1 is an universal channel.
And now you know the answer: on channels 11-16 we can use any normal voice, except DrumKit (Style Creator won't even allow to select DrumKit for those channels).
All 11-16 channels have equal capability -the difference is only what settings we apply on particular channel. That is, if we wish we can use Pad channel for bass guitar.. or we can use Phr2 channel for padding (if Pad channel is already used for another padding).

Just regarding the channel numbers. You are right in that when we use MIDI quick record, the style parts record to song parts 9-16 which is a GM convention. But there is really nothing special about those song parts. You can record any style part on any song part you want to by using MIDI mutli record, and setting the source for each song part to be any source part you want (panel parts, style parts, multipad parts)

Thank you both for this explanation. It confirms my thinking too. Bogdan, I hope the video you are making is coming along. I plan on being one of your guinea pigs!!!! Thanks again.  -charley
