Hello, my Tyros 5, 71 keys, has the following defect: I turn on the power, the LEDs light up but the screen does not light up. There's no sound either. Has anyone ever had this type of case. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Shine a flashlight and see if you can see anything.

for now, plug an RGB cable out of the T5 into a compatible monitor/TV to see if the T5 is working. If there's no output visually, then yeah, there's definitely a problem.

Also try listening with headphones/ or line out into a mixer or receiver to see if you even get the basic piano sound

There is no signal on the screen and there is also no sound or connection via USB to a PC via the Musicsoft Downloader program.

Amwilburn

If there is no signal coming out of the Tyros 5 into an RGB monitor, then yeah, you've got serious problems: probably dead  motherboard (but possibly something else, since the LED's do turn on), rather than just a dead screen.
You can take it to a repair shop, but they'll charge you just for taking a look (typically $50 to $80 here); and it sounds like a major, major problem. Possibly over $1000 to repair.

But before panicking, *did* you route to an external screen? "There is no signal on the screen" is pretty vague; what you previously described sounded like a dead LCD screen, which actually isn't a big issue at all if you route the screen to an external monitor. *Did you*?

The connection to PC doesn't mean much because you need to put it into PC mode first (I think?), which you can't do without the screen anyway.

MARCOS FERREIRA

I turned it on to an external screen and only the Yamaha logo appears. See photos in attached files. I spoke to a technician in my city of Natal/Brazil, and he thinks that there is no processing. I'll take it tomorrow for him to check. Thank you for your attention.

oh, that might not be as bad... *might* simply need to format the hard drive; that might not be motherboard at all. Might just be the hard drive.

That's actually *good* news!

Hi Marcos,

In your first attached picture, the display of your Tyros5 is pulled very high up. This may have caused a ribbon cable to come loose inside the display housing. I know of a few cases where this led to such errors (on Tyros3/4/5).

It is also possible (or in addition) that the backlight inside the display housing is defective or is not receiving power. If, as already mentioned by "ikmusic", you illuminate the T5 display with a flashlight (e.g. with the LED on your smartphone switched on), would you perhaps see the Yamaha logo there as well as on the external screen?

Like Mark (Amwilburn) said, it could be due to a defect in the internal hard drive. To be on the safe side, I would remove the hard drive in this case. To do this, you have to loosen three screws on the bottom of the T5, then carefully pull out the caddy with the hard disk and unplug the internal USB cable. (See the following video.) Then try whether the T5 starts normally without a hard disk.
>>> https://youtu.be/ffeOJUp--1M

If the T5 starts, you can connect the hard drive to the computer using a suitable USB cable and check it. It may also be that the hard drive is OK, but the SATA-to-USB adapter board installed on it is defective.

If the T5 does not start even without a hard drive, I recommend that you first download the Tyros4 (!) Service Manual here and try to start the internal Test program as described there. (Three specific piano keys must be held down when switching on.)
>>> https://www.psrtutorial.com/lessons/workshops/ServiceManuals.html

Please report back here if this works (displayed on the external screen).

If it doesn't work, only an experienced service technician (preferably an authorized Yamaha service center) can probably help you. The first thing the technician should do is open (unscrew) the display housing to make sure that an internal cable has not come loose, as described above.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hello everyone, I took my Tryos 5 to the technician and he said the problem was with the motherboard, but he can't fix it. I'm going to take it to a Yamaha technical assistance center located in another city, 200 km from mine. I put a light on the display and the message "Internal hardware error!" appears.

Amwilburn

Just to warn you the motherboard is the 2nd most expensive thing on a TOTL (the 3rd is the screen, which also sounds like it's going). So get a quote estimate *before* they do anything.

The most expensive thing to replace is, unbelievably, the casing.

MARCOS FERREIRA

Thank you Amwilburn, the technician I'm taking doesn't change the plate, he will try to recover it. And he only does the job if I authorize it.

MARCOS FERREIRA

Hello everyone, I took my Tyros 5 Keyboard, 76 keys, to a technician, who is not authorized by Yamaha, to fix the motherboard and he was unable to do so. He replaced the entire set responsible for the digital mesh, the batch of memories, the PWR, VHC and analyzed the diodes, capacitors, resistors and regulators phase by phase and the defect remains, that is, the Display does not light up. He thinks the defect is in the secondary meshes, which come through the middle of the plate. I asked Yamaha, through authorized technical assistance, for a new motherboard and they responded that Yamaha no longer had this board in stock and would no longer manufacture it. The person responsible for the authorized station informed me that Yamaha has another board that works for the Tyros 5, but that the Display also needs to be changed. If you only change the board, the keyboard will work, but with noise, and the service must be carried out by an authorized Yamaha service center for a 90-day warranty. In my city there is no authorized Yamaha assistance to carry out the service. The nearest post is in another state, 200 km away. I'm trying to contact them but I can't. They don't answer the phone, they don't respond to emails or WhatsApp messages. I would like to know if anyone has had this type of problem with the Tyros 5. The cost of the service should be around 3 thousand dollars. The price of a used Tyros 5, 76 keys, here is around 5 thousand dollars. I have already invested in the original TRS-MS05 speakers, a 1GB memory expansion card and 3 voice packs. If I buy a new SX900 keyboard it will cost the same price as repairing the Tyros 5 and this equipment will no longer be useful to me. Thank you in advance for your attention.

Hi Marcos,

Have you tried / did the technician already try to remove/unplug the internal T5 hard drive and then try to start the T5 without the hard drive (with the external display connected)?

If the hard drive or the SATA-to-USB adapter installed directly on it is defective, this could be the reason why the boot process is stuck at the Yamaha logo.

To remove the hard drive, three screws must first be removed from the front right on the bottom of the T5. Then the caddy with the hard drive can be carefully pulled out to the front and the internal USB cable can be unplugged.

Attention: Make sure that the (black) coil on the USB adapter board (at the back of the hard drive) is not damaged/torn off!

Maybe these tips will help you.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Marcos

In my view your Tyros is obviously not economically worth repairing, so you need to accept that. There's no use throwing any more money at it.
I admire your efforts to get it repaired, but there comes a time to evaluate that cost and realise that it's not repairable.

Sell the speakers, buy the SX900 or even a Genos 1 and move on would be my advice.

Most of us have been down this road, and looking back, it's rarely positive. I did it with an Orla organ, and half the circuit boards in it spent many weeks going up and down the country to an Orla specialist David Gunn to be repaired, but eventually it was time to let go. We did get it going again, but then other components failed one after another.

The Tyros 5 was a very good TOTL keyboard, but if it can't be repaired at an acceptable cost, then it's reached the end of its life. Dump it... Move on.

Sadly ALL keyboards die eventually.... Just like us!

Hi Paula,

I think it's not good for you to post your phone number publicly here. This may cause you to receive more unwanted spam calls.

I therefore strongly recommend that you edit your post and remove the phone number there. It's best to contact Marcos directly via PM and give him your phone number (and ideally also your email address).

Best regards,
Chris

MARCOS FERREIRA

Hey guys, on April 2, 2024 I got the Tyros 5 back from the technician who said he couldn't fix it. He put back all the parts he had replaced. I got home and turned on the Tyros 5. It had the same defect: the Display didn't light up and the button LEDs turned on, but there was no sound and nothing changed when touching the buttons. I left it on and went to do other things. After about 15 to 20 minutes I noticed that the display had lit up with the message: "Internal hardware error!". Before sending it to the technicians to check, I had already seen this message when placing a light on the display, as advised by the people at the PSRTutorial website, but the Display had never lit up with this message before. I checked in the Tyros 5 manual how to reset and return to factory settings. I turned off the key and turned it on again by pressing the first key on the right (G) and then the keyboard restarted normally. Incredible, after going through 3 technicians, having several components changed and put back, the Tyros 5 revived. I and all the technicians were very surprised. It has been working normally for 3 days now. Turns on and off without any problems. What happened??? Any cold welding? The technician who attempted to change the components said he left it on all morning and nothing happened. I spent 5 months trying to find a solution. I sent 3 messages to Yamaha, spoke to 3 authorized Yamaha distributors and technicians and after all the Tyros 5 returned. I'm very happy and I want to thank everyone who helped me on this journey. Thanks God!
