Default Volume Level for “Keyboard”

Hi all,

Slowly transferring my setup from the Genos to Genos2. When using the one touch settings for each style, my first response was - the right hand parts are way too loud. What I've noticed is that the Keyboard volume (on the same page as rhythm parts on the secondary display) is at 127. The keyboard also defaults to 127 at power up. Reducing to 100 gives a better balance in my opinion.

Checking on the genos - this defaults to 100 at power up which makes more sense as it gives you "headroom" if you need to turn all the right and left hand parts up in one go.

All other defaults for channels, songs, mic etc are 100 so why is keyboard 127!

Just wondering what everyone's thought was on this.....

Thanks

The keyboard is set up for use by lounge piano player (IMO)

I use it to back me up as a singer / player and I turn the style volume down to 70. I have to turn the keyboard styles down in order to sing (using VH2) louder than the band is. If you try to turn the mic volume up, my vocals become distorted. By turning down the style volume to 70, all the OTS voices are way too loud.

The solution for me was to just make all custom song styles for each song. Every style is set up perfect and it is now a no brainer to perform live.

On my Genos2 default setting is 100 for style and voices. A lot of people find the style is louder than the voices.

Default for style and voices is 100. But default for keyboard on the second screen - where the individual rhythm parts are is 127!

Original genos was 100

Hi Ardsar

On the Aux display you most probably have it set to display "KbdVol", what Eileen is most probably seeing is the default with the slider set to display "kbd" or new "Volume"

change the assignment and you will see the difference in default setting.

Hi Bill

You are correct - thank you. The genos was set to volume but with a name kbd which I assumed was the same as kbdVol. It's similar but different.

Hi Ardsar,

The "Keyboard Volume" (KbdVol) parameter (known from earlier models such as Tyros5) was originally "forgotten" by Yamaha in the Genos1 and was only added as a new Live Control parameter with the G1 firmware V1.20.

With the "Keyboard Volume" parameter you can reduce the volume of all 4 keyboard parts (Right 1-3, Left) at the same time, while maintaining the volume ratio between the individual keyboard parts currently set in the Mixer. See also page 146 in the Genos2 Reference Manual (Assignable Functions).

"Keyboard Volume" basically does the same thing as a connected Volume Pedal (FC7), which is set so that it only affects the keyboard parts. Technically speaking, corresponding MIDI Expression (CC #11) messages are sent to the individual keyboard part channels.

I recommend NOT using the "Keyboard Volume" parameter at all (at most to temporarily reduce the volume of the keyboard parts, but without saving this to Registrations). I always leave this value at 127. The desired volumes of the keyboard parts should instead be set directly in the Mixer display (Panel 1 page). In addition, the volume for each voice used in the keyboard parts can also be adjusted in the Voice Edit display.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris
