Hi all,

I am looking for factory sounds and styles that are already edited and effects are added to it and ready to be used instead of editing each voice and style and save it to user banks.

Any idea if they are available in this forum or at least some guidance on what best effects to use for each sound and style.

Thanks,
Hamza

Hi Hamza,

The preset voices and styles of your PSR-A5000 already use suitable effects/DSPs and are basically (as well as on PSR-S/SX models, Genos and Tyros models already very well sounding tuned.

If you feel like you have to rework a lot (or "all") Voices and Styles, there may be something wrong with your Master EQ / Master Compressor settings or, if used, with your external mixer and/or your external speakers.

I have (on Genos and Tyros5) always set the Master EQ linear ("Flat") and use the Master Compressor Preset "Natural" or "Basic"  (in headphone mode (AKG K712 Pro), with the connected studio monitor speakers (Yamaha MSP10 Studio) and (in live operation) also when using an external mixer and PA speakers. In the latter case, i.e. at live performances, the mixer's Master EQ is also set to be almost linear (apart from a small reduction at 250 Hz and/or a small increase at 12 kHz, if necessary due to the room acoustics). The channel EQ on the mixer can usually remain set to be almost linear. I only slightly adjust the sound of the keyboard here if necessary (e.g. slight bass boost at 60 Hz and/or slight treble boost at 12 kHz.

On the following page you will find many User Voice files (VCE), also called Voice Set files. But listening through all of these Voices takes a lot of time, and of course these Voices can't take full advantage of the effects capabilities of your A5000.

If, even after adjusting the Master EQ and Master Compressor and/or external equipment, you are not satisfied with the sound of certain Preset Voices and/or Styles, the best (and fastest) option is probably to edit them yourself to your taste.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Hamza. All keyboard players prefer different sound settings because everybody's ears are different.
My EQ & Effects setting would possibly not sound correct to you.

As Chris stated it's best to spend time using the keyboard VOICE EDIT and save as .VCE's for your preferred sounds.

None of the many keyboards I have owned (All brands) over the past 50 years has ever sounded at its best out of the box. They sounded Bland & Flat...
All Keyboard Brands appear to give you a basic reasonable sound setting for you the owner to work from.

That's why you hear a yamaha demonstration...people say why does my model at home sound as good as the demonstrators !!!.
Some players accept a new board and never ever make any adjustments and that is fine if you just want to switch on and play and that meets your expectations.

For myself I enjoy playing on a keyboard when it is set to give its best.

Hamza - your request doesn't really make sense because that is exactly what factory voices are, they already have what Yamaha considers are appropriate effects added. If you do not like these, or want to customize them, that is up to you.
You will find people occasionally post customized voices, especially piano voices, but you would have to comb thru posts for them. Libraries - no.

Hi Hamza,

I forgot to mention before: A User Voice file always refers to a specific Preset Voice and only contains the relevant Voice Set parameters, i.e. it does not contain any Sound or Samples. If the Preset Voice on which a User Voice is based does not exist on that instrument, the keyboard will try to find a similar Preset Voice. However, the result can then sound completely different than on the original instrument with which the User Voice was created, or the Voice remains completely silent.

Chris

Mike or Chris,

I have a beginner question related to this. I hope it makes sense:

I understand you can go in Voice Edit to set a voice's Filter/EQ/Insert Effect parameters and save it as a User voice.

You can also go into the Mixer and change Filter/EQ/Effect/Master EQ etc. which also can effect the sound of Right and Left voices, and save all that as a Registration.

Since there is overlap of these Filter/EQ/Effect parameters, is there a general strategy for how best to set these parameters? Perhaps get voices the way you want first in Voice Edit, then go into the Mixer to set other things like Style tracks, master EQ etc?

Rich

Hi Rich,

There is no general or "best" strategy here. Every user works a little differently here. You don't always have to change "everything", usually a few details that you change according to your own wishes are sufficient.

You can also make changes to a specific keyboard Voice (Right/Left) in the Mixer, then go to Voice Edit and save that Voice there as a User Voice. Compared to direct memorizing in Registrations, this has the advantage that you can later call up User Voices individually if required, e.g. to make new Registrations.

If required, you can assign several Insert Effects (and then save them in a registration) to a specific Part, i.e. a Voice, in the Mixer. This is not possible in a User Voice saved in Voice Edit.

In this context, I would like to point out again that User Voices can only be used in keyboard parts. If one were to use a User Voice to revoice MIDI file, Style or Multi Pad Parts, only the Preset Voice on which the User Voice is based would be used, i.e. the modified Voice Set would be ignored.

You can also memorize changes to styles in the Mixer either directly in registrations, or you call up the Style Creator and save the changes as a new style. This can also have advantages, e.g. if you need the style with the changed settings more often or if you want to use it in several registrations. Of course, the latter could also be achieved using the FREEZE function. It always depends on the individual case which method is best used.

By the way, I recommend that you take your time and go through the "Parameter Chart" section of the SX900/700 Data List. There you will find, among other things, information for each parameter as to whether and WHERE it can be saved.
>>> https://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/keyboards/arranger_workstations/psr-sx900/downloads.html#product-tabs

Incidentally, the Master EQ settings cannot be saved in registrations, but only directly in the Master EQ display as a user setting. Normally you set your preferred Master EQ and Master Compressor settings once (preferably while playing different preset styles and their OTS), and then leave those settings as they are.

Important: MIDI files can contain "Master EQ Sy***" and the Master EQ settings may change unexpectedly. I therefore recommend always leaving the Master EQ checkbox ticked in Parameter Lock (Menu > Utility > Parameter Lock).

If you have any further questions, just get in touch here again. :)

Best regards,
Chris

Chris,

Understand your points completely. Though sometimes this stuff is complicated, I find the SX900 is actually much easier to understand than my MODX7+ which I will be selling. I have these comments saved as if they are a supplemental manual, as I may need to refresh my memory down the road.

I was not aware that a User Voice would not work when re-voicing a Style. I was then wondering if an Expansion voice would work when re-voicing a Style?

Thanks for your feedback, Rich!

Yes, Expansion Voices can be used in the same way as Preset Voices, i.e. also for revoicing Styles, MIDI files and Multi Pads.

The background is that each Expansion Voice, just like each Preset Voice, has a unique Voice address (Bank Select MSB - Bank Select LSB - Program Change). A User Voice always uses the address of the Preset or Expansion Voice it is based on. The User Voice file therefore only contains the deviations from this original Preset or Expansion Voice (which is referred to as a "modified Voice Set").

You can display the Voice addresses in the Voice Selection display: Touch the Menu icon there (i.e. in the Voice Selection display) and set the "Voice Number" parameter to "Show". For example, the SX900's "ConcertGrand" has the Voice Number "#000-122-001" which means "MSB=0, LSB=122, PC=1". See also the "Voice List" section from page 3 of the SX900 Data List PDF.

For the sake of completeness I would like to mention that the Yamaha Program Change numbers displayed here start from "1". Accordingly the actual MIDI Program Change numbers are one lower, since that number system starts from "0".

Chris

I'm gonna go against the grain in this thread and say I think the voices and styles sound great already! haha, but really, everything is stock on my SX900, maybe I just make some parts of the style louder or softer. EQ and compressor is default settings.
