One man band to Yamaha sounds

Hi all,

Is there any way to enhance the One Man Band actual instrument sounds direct on my laptop by re-routing it through some additional software using i.e. the proper Yamaha ins file? I purchased OMB V12 today & really want to get more out of it without connecting it to my Yamaha.

Varranger does an excellent job of this with the new add-on soundbank - I just listened to this very long demo playing actual Genos styles and the results are really amazing. Can I achieve someting similar using OMB?

Thanks for your feedback,

Henni

Henni,

If you mean the OMB software the answer is yes, you can change the voices to your own needs using Style Magic Yamaha. When I make my styles I always change the voices to T4 using SMY.

Hi Piet,

I have just purchased StyleMagic YA - waiting for my activation code in great anticipation. Busy playing with the demo - AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!! software. Cannot believe I never looked into it before. It will save me A LOT of work in future.

No, what I want is for OMB to sound more real through my laptop speakers. I have no need for it if connected to my Yamaha. If you listen to the Varranger Genos style demo above, you'll understand what I'm after.

I would go for Varranger, but it is just a tad pricey for me right now.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply my kind friend,

Well done Henni, you're on the right path.

I have been mentioning StyleMagic on this forum every 1 or 2 weeks for the past 2 years

If your into editing Yamaha styles then this is the go-to program.
Good for making song styles, good for saving style parts, editing voices & midi events.

I'm sure you'll get the best out of it very quickly.

Henni,

I know the problem, a PC soundcard is not even a fraction of the Yamaha sounds. A bit of a solution I found in buying a QY70 sound module from Yamaha as a replacement for the PC sound module.

Years ago one could buy a DB50XG soundcard but in the newer PC's it doesn't fit anymore - pitty.

Hennie,

my friend, I use the Varranger with UR22 mkII from Steinberg.

Hi Henni, years ago I used to use OMB with XG sound fonts. At that time sound fonts was the only way to go really. Might be more options available nowadays.
I don't have any of Dan's sound banks for VArranger yet, though am considering it. His sound banks might be sound fonts as well, not sure.

Btw , bought style magic myself a couple of days ago , looks very promising.k
Best wishes

Hi all,

Varranger with the sounbanks is 699€. Unfortunately more than I can afford for now. Also, it requires 8MB of ram. My ancient HP Laptop running XP would not be up to it.

I am blown away with StyleMagic YA. The things that took me at least 30 minutes or more can now be achieved with a single mouse click. The depth of editing is truly amazing, right down to effects, cutoffs etc. I wish they would speed up delivery of my activation code. It has been 7 hours that feels like 7 days already.  ;)

Keep well my friends,
Henni

Hi Piet,
I own a db-50-xg and bought an enclosure for it  named Doxbox. Maybe it is still out there.
The wavetable card is inserted and on the outside is a midi in and through as well as an audio output.
Still using itand loving it!

Hi Henni,
Have you ever checked out the old posts on Synthzone  forums Software arrangers and softsynths, unfortunately I don't think it goes back further than 2006.

Back then there were a few of us running omb and/or livestyler software. I had a few options running, one of them including an Audigy nx external soundcard  which loaded soundfonts.  I think at that stage I may have still been running windows xp. I think I may have even had a computer that loaded soundfonts directly

Might be worth having a look thru some of the old posts.
Best wishes

The VST version of the DB50XG, the S-YXG50, can be downloaded from several websites, and can be used in all VST compatible software. By using the VSTMIDI driver, you can even use it as a MIDI device. For more info, see this this URL.
I still have a DB50XG somewhere in a box in my basement, hasn't been used since 15 years, but I've been using the S-YXG50 and although it lacks some XG features, it sounds quite good, with almost no CPU load.

Hi Robert & all,

Tx! Got it working for OMB on XP by loading another more detailed VST version direct into OMB. Now want to do same for StyleMagic YA.

However, if I want to configure VST Midi driver, it states: This is NOT a VSTi synth! Do I need any additional software to achieve this?

Update: Tx, I succeeded. For anyone who want to do same, follow this & this link

Update 2: The harware option in the 2nd link above works much, much better. I even used it for OMB & WOW!!! did that program just spring to life on my ancient laptop running on XP.

Tx to all for your contributions - I am now sorted.

Kind regards,

Henni

There is a neat solution, which I use from time to time.

Its a program called Plogue Sforzando, which can run as a standalone program or as a vst plugin in a DAW. Horrible name but good software and free of charge.

It can import any SF2 soundfont like Timbres of Heaven which has some good sounds. It also supports SFX and DLS sounds. It can load midi file and play that back as well as convert that to a wav file. You can add effects as well. Give it a go.

Download latest version here: https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando.html

Richard

Hi Richard , thanks for mentioning it, I actually got it as part of Band in a Box, been  quite a while since I used OMB , Band in a Box or even VArranger, as anything more than a means for
creating / editing styles for my Korgs,  so haven't kept up to date with the soft synths  they run.
15 years ago it was a bit of a complicated procedure, by the sounds of things there are far more options now. Might check back into it.

Hi Richard & all,

Tx for the link. Unfortunately it does not work fow Win XP 32bit. I use VirtualMIDISynth instead.

Here is my own personalized Sounfont that I use with good results for anyone interested.

Keep well all,

Correction!

YAMAHA XG WDM SoftSynthesizer 5.13.2600.31 is by FAR the best sounding option. Install direct into your hardware setup. Only select it in OMB when done. As easy as that!

The absolute BEST free Yamaha soundfont I've found to date.

Pity OMB cannot play the later Yamaha styles correct like i.e vArranger can. However, listen to all of THESE  styles using the above setup. You might just be surprised by the new quality coming out of your PC's soundcard.

Hi Henni, I am interested in this SF, but seems the link you posted was broken... anychance you can share somehow? Tx.

edit:
emm, I just checked the voicelist of this sound font set, found it is heavily customized for Indonesian music, added some ethnic instruments, ... the voice list is obviously altered from original Yamaha S970... so this may defeat the purpose to my use,,I would better find something else.

btw, Henni, I didn't have chance to hear this soundfont set yet but I believe there are better sounding soft synth around... there was a PSR-S900 kontakt sampling set, together with Tyrus Vsti, are best at simulating yamaha arranger as far as I know...

and in such configuration, One Man Band works better than vArranger, as vArranger automatically altered some voices e.g. MegaVoices in yamaha styles, vArranger will fall back to default GM voices.  OMB does not do that so voices will be messed up if your source does not contain Megavoices .... but with PSR-S900 kontakt sample MegaVoice is available so OMB can actually benifit from that...

if  interested, we can discuss a lot more details...

Hi Yeel,

Tx for your feedback my friend. I'll look into it. I would be elated to find something that can play Yamaha Megavoices correct.

All the best,

Hi Yeel & all,

Please help me set up Kontakt for use with OMB. It seems to not be straight forward at all. I want to use it as a sound font for Yamaha styles playing through OMB.

Tx for all & any help,
