Hi there Tyros 5 players!

I am just curious to know.....

I upgraded from a very old Yamaha with a floppy drive to a tyros 5 about 3 months ago....and I know this is going to sound crazy but I prefer the sounds of the pianos on my old keyboard ! (There I've said it) I find the tyros pianos a bit harsh or dare I say muffled ....I only use one piano sound as all the others sound muffled I can't really explain what I mean like not crisp. I also find when playing just piano keys and no accompaniment that the sound is harsh and it gyrates on me to the point where I've stopped playing classical piano pieces now.
I've tried fiddling with the dsp, sustain, touch response etc.
Does anyone else find this ?

Are you playing through a monaural amplifier or listening on monaural earphones?  If so, that would explain the muffled sound of piano voices or any voices that are intended to be heard in stereo.

It don't mean a thing...

You can also use the voice set feature to give the piano more debth amd reverb. The piano sounds on T5 are actually very good. I suspect that the reason that you like the sound from your old keyboard better is because the sound was crisper icoming from the built in speskers. Of the old keyboard. I felt the same going from my 2100 to the T5.

Hear are two posts you should listen to and compare with your piano sound.
The first is a thread on piano sounds which compares different models. Read through.

The second is a recent post by a very fine piano player.

Listen to these through decent stereo headphones, and compare to what your keyboard sounds like. If it sounds like these, then that is the best you are going. To get!!
But If it doesn't sound like these, then something is wrong. Start investigating why,  by scanning down the the first post till you find the midi posted. Copy and load it into your Tyros and see how that sounds.
Let us know what happens,

Can you or someone else advise on voice set parameters for the piano on the Tyros5?
Thanks

Toril S

Sorry. But just experiment. The preset voice will not ghange, just the user voice file you create. Maybe  someone else have come up with a good voice set piano sound?

I'm definitely playing through stereo headphones but I could seek advice for what everyone else uses......I really love all the sounds apart from the piano the midi piano(Ithink that's its name is the only one I like) the breathy sax and jazz sax are my favourite !

Sorry if I'm an annoying newbie but can you explain your last comment about scanning down the first post till I find the midi ?

Hollyz3uk

Also forgot to mention that I've only heard my keyboard once out loud via the amplifier as my husband works from home and my children are studying for exams so I'm forced to only play through earphones but I did try the pianos out loud to see if it was my earphones and sadly that was not the case ....maybe it's my ears ! Lol

It would normally sound better through headphones anyway.
You did not comment on whether you listened to the various samples and thought they sounded better or similar to your live keyboard voice. If you do not like any of the voices, then if you scan through the posts you will see my comment about half way down as to why that is often the case. People may prefer a 'thicker' sound for single note melody lines, even if this not actually very usable when played as full keyboard.
BTW - The midi of the original midi recording used in the comparisons is in about the 6th last post in the thread.

Some additional info - make a copy of the midi on a usb. Insert into your keyboard and play. Then look in the mixer to see which piano voice it selected on your keyboard - it will show as the main voice channel. If you then touch that voice icon in the mixer, you will be able to replace it with other piano voices on your keyboard and play the midi to compare sounds.
