I see that all I need to connect Song book to computer and psr3000 is a simple usb cable.  I understand I can also possible use the cable to hook up to a vst.  Yes, no, maybe?  Can I run two channels at the same time?

Hi ekurburski,

The following MIDI data can be transferred simultaneously via the USB cable (see also the attached picture):

USB-MIDI Port 1: Transmit and Receive (Channels 1 - 16)
USB-MIDI Port 2: Receive only (Channels 1 - 16)

Best regards,
Chris

simultaneously.  How do you control each channel?

To use "Open Text" on the PC and play a VST instrument by the PSR-3000 keyboard simultanously via the USB cable I recommend to do the following:

- Press "Function > MIDI".

- Select "KBD & STYLE" template .

- Press "Edit" and tab to Transmit ".

- The Parts "Right 1", "Right 2" and "Left" should be already set to "OFF".

- Set "Upper" Part to "CH 2" (to control the VST instrument).

- Set "Lower" Part to "CH3" or to "OFF".

- Use button "B" to scroll down to "Song 1" and set it to "CH 1" (to control "OpenText").

- Press "Exit" button, tab to "User" drive and save your customized MIDI template here.

- Make sure that your new User template is SELECTED now when calling up "Function > MIDI" again.

- Make sure to have installed the Yamaha MIDI Driver on the PC.

- In the main window of "OpenText" select "Digital Workstation" as Instrument. This is MIDI Port 1 of the USB-MIDI driver (and the PSR-3000).

- In the MIDI settings of your VST instrument on the PC select also "Digital Workstation" and CH 2 as the Input Channel.

With the settings I described above, your playing on the Upper area of the keyboard is ALWAYS transmitted (even if both Right Parts are switched OFF).

If you want the VST instrument to NOT always sound, you can use the MIDI template "All Parts". It is then important that "Right 1" does NOT transmit on CH 1. Set e.g. Right 1 Transmit Channel to "OFF" and leave "Right 2" on "CH 2". Then the VST instrument will only play when Right 2 is switched "ON".

If you do not want to control the VST instrument from the keyboard, but from certain song or style parts, then you set THESE parts under "Transmit" to the desired transmit channels (to which the VST instrument responds).

Hope this helps a little!
Chris

Thanks.  That does help a lot and gets me started.
