Hello Everyone.

I have a broken key on my Genos that I want to replace or repair tomorrow morning.
I remember reading that someone here had opened up a Genos some months ago
and would maybe advise me how to go about it.

Even though I don't know how that will affect myguarantee  if I open up the keyboard,
I have 5 gigs from tomorrow till Saturday and really need to fix this problem.

Best Regards,

Abby.

● Everyone kept saying "That won't work!" - Then someone came along who didn't know that, and - just did it.
● Never put the Manual too far away: There's more in it than you think! ;-)

Thank you for your quick responses Chris and Bachus.

I think I will just use the octave transpose button for tonight's gig and attempt to open up
the Genos tomorrow.

There are no Yamaha authorized technicians here on this island Ibiza.
The keyboard would have to be transported to Madrid for repairs, which would probably
very long to get my keyboard back.
I still have to do 8 gigs between today and the 31st of October, resting only this coming
Sunday..

I do have the video of Markus Fuller opening up a Tyros 5, which I referred to when I
opened up my Tyros 3, but the Genos is obviously different.

Thank you both.

Best Regards,

Abby.

Hi Abby,
this guy opened the Genos to replace the Main Variation buttons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Td0D4r1_ASw

Does anyone happens to know if the key replacement process on the Genos is exactly the same as the one on the Tyros?

So the main problem for Abby will be to open the Genos properly?

Hello Abby,

Why not look for a piano keyboard removed from the Genos in someone who has turned it into an accordion button key!... maybe on the'right corner' or specialized sales site... or in an accordion key keyboard installer?

Hello Panos and Patt.

The reason that I posted is to ask if someone has any previous knowledge of
opening up a Genos.
I need to open it to repair or replace the key, but am not sure how to go about it
without breaking something.
Thank you both for your responses.

Best Regards,

Abby.

Below there is a link that shows how to open up the Genos keyboard.   The video shows how to fix a different problem and replace some loose buttons.   However, they show how to open it up and access the keys.

That might help you.     I do not know the language of the video but i guess you can use the youtube translator if needed.  (not sure if there is a Youtube translator but i believe there is one).

Hope it helps.

Abby, my friend. Having watched all of your videos, I amazed that those keys held up this long. You are a very skilled player, and play the keyboard just as hard as you play the fully weighted keys of a piano. Arranger keys, all brands, were never designed to withstand that kind of punishment.

Hope you are able to make an easy repair,

Hello Gary.

Yes, unfortunately I do tend to whack keyboards pretty hard.
As you said,  it's because of the many years of piano playing.

Thanks to the advice of many members here, especially Chris ( OverOver ) and Snicker,
I have opened up the Genos and reinstalled the offending key, which had jumped from it's
insert joint.

The bar holding the key in place was a little bit loose, so I assume that it might be the cause,
though I wonder why other keys did not jump out of their sockets,  if that were the case.

I did find other screws that were slightly loose, both in front and under the keyboard as well
as the bars holding the keys in place, which I tightened.
I did not touch the circuit boards or anything else.

I transport my Genos 6 days a week and like many things, including cars, furniture etc,
I suppose that screws probably have to be tightened again after a period of use.
That is my theory anyway.  All in all, happy days are here again.

Thank you all for your help and comments.

Best Regards,

Abby.

Glad to hear you were able to make an easy fix. Like you, I transported my keyboard every day of the week, often to two or three jobs, and there were some loose screws I had to contend with. Now, I have some buttons that need replacement, which is a bit more difficult and I just may have to send my S950 out to a service center, which I can not do since I retired.

Good luck,

Thank you Gary and Toril.
It was less difficult than I thought and I had the keyboard up and running again within half an hour.

Gary, you have email.

Glad to hear you were able to take care of the broken key.

When read the original post, my first thought was  the quality of the Genos vs your Tyros3.  I held off commenting until you resolved the issue.

You played the Tyros3 for many years without major problems, and with the Genos you already have a broken key within a few months.

Both used and played under the same conditions.

The Genos should of held up much longer than it did.

Since you have so many engagements, and rely on your equipment, you may want to consider a SX900 as a backup.

Regards,

PS: Now take it apart again, and shoot a video so we can see how you fixed it.  :) :) :)

Pianoman

Hello Jerryghr.

To open up the Genos:

You flip it over and lay the keyboard on something soft.
I used a winter feather filled bed cover.
.
Then you first remove 3 of  the 7 special screws that are  in front of the Keyboard where all the
Jacks and other connectors are.

Those are the 2 outer ones, plus the middle one, which would make it screw number 4.
When you are done with removing all the below mentioned screws, you can remove the rest
of the front screws.

Then you remove all the screws around the edges of the Genos,  15 in total.

Lastly you remove the 6 screws closest to the USB Stick, hold both halves of the  Genos
and flip it again right side up.
Then gently raise the top of the Genos a couple of inches,  starting at the back and pulling
towards you, where the keys are.

It will open cleanly without any problems, being mindful of not tugging at the  connecting
cables inside of course.

When you are done you just reverse the procedure, starting with the top screws in front,
then the middle screws near the USB Stick, and lastly the 15 screws on the edges of the
Genos.

And yes, I punished my T3 for 9 years and never had a broken or dislocated key.
The exit button broke first, then the motherboard gave up on me, both after 9 years.

Best Regards,

Abby.

That is a great summary of the repair. Since you took the time to write it up in easy to follow detail , it should be saved and available to all Genos owners if needed.

Perhaps you could cut and paste a copy in the Genos general info board for future reference.

Thank You,

Jerryghr
