Hello :) I see many recommend changing EQ settings on the keyboards. But I also read somewhere that this can cause problems when you record your songs on the keyboards. You get clipping sounds and such. I record songs a lot now, so I haven't dared fiddle with any EQ settings. Is there a setting that will give the keyboard a stronger sound, without ruining the recordings? I never adjusted EQ settings on my old keyboard, so this is a little scary...

The only time you will experience clipping is when you overdrive the input of the recording device - EQ does not do this. Instead, you must monitor your input levels to ensure they are not beyond a certain point. If you record at a lower level, clipping is unlikely, and you can always raise the volume when you have finished the editing process. I always normalize my volume level using Audacity and set it to -0.6, which puts it right on the money with other music file levels.

Hope this helps,

EQ settings also depending much where you are playing, In a church, at home, on a small or large gig. Do you have a tiled floor or carpeted, wooden walls or stone, many glass windows. It all has its effect on the sound. I don't gig (anymore) and have two 'MyHomeMix' settings in the Mixing Console Panel on my S950. One for popular music and another for a more classical type of music. I also play a lot trough my headphones. As Gary said, in Audacity you are able to do quite a bit of adjustments for your recordings but in EQ you can enhance the sound of the keyboard VERY much.

Please watch Telmo's video, Toril, which will show you his EQ Settings for the PSR-S970 keyboard.  The EQ Settings begin at 2:57 in the video.  Just pause the video and write down the settings.  I don't own a PSR-S970 keyboard, but those who do, rave about Telmo's EQ Settings in the Mixing Console.  :)

Thanks Gary, Dick and Roger! I use Audacity, but also the audio recorder in the keyboard itself.. I am worried that this one will be effected if I change the EQ settings?

Hi Toril,

What I do is create a SONG Specific Style for every song I want to perform (you can probably do the same thing with a registration too). The Reason for this is I set my STYLE master Volume level at 68. The MIC setting for my singing is set at 100. This ensures there will be no clipping with these two settings.

Then I record my playing and singing of the song with the Keyboard's recorder. I then play back the recording and listen for what sounds out of balance. Then adjust the EQ master for the best setting for YOUR voice and style of playing.

Once you get this adjusted and you are satisfied you are set and there is no need to adjust you keyboard ever again.

For playing at an event using your external speaker system, you can then tweak that system at the venue but your keyboard, you don't mess with that ever.

Regards
Drake

When I record songs on my PSR-S950 I set the recording volume at 70, my mic volume is at 78, and I use a Crown CM-311A headset mic, which pretty much eliminates feedback and overdrive distortion because it has a built in limiter.

I then transfer the songs to Audacity, Normalize the volume to -.06 and export the songs to MP3 files using Lame, which interfaces with Audacity. I post them in Box Net.

Hope this helps,

Roger - Thank you, my friend, for the reminder. I'd forgotten this valuable guide to some useful basic settings.
