This is a great piece of music - a Zimmer favourite of mine for its exuberance and sheer joy. The percussion track is tricky as you say, featuring timpani, paradiddles on the snare drum and a beer bottle.

Do you have audio software where you can isolate the stems and show the precussion? That could help in training your ear to listen to the percussive rhythms.

This a great rendition of the theme from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

There's also the great man himself doing the theme in his L.A studio.

Colin, you on G2 yet, or still G1? I ask because in terms of orchestral drums, G1 only has 1 set (the same one going back 20 years) and the G2 has 3 new sets (4 orchestral sets in total); with the 3 being a Hans Zimmer drum kit, a John Williams drum kit, and a "stomp" kit.

The Hans Zimmer kit is what inspired me to do my Top Gun Maverick Medley. It'll still be possible to do something close enough on G1 (by using a revo kit; it's just a shame there were no revo orchestral kits added, which I emailed Yamaha about when G1 came out. So for G2, 2 of the 3 new kits are Ambient drum kits (similar to revo with twice as many velocity layers).

But it's still doable on G1, we'd just need to use revo 'standard' kits.

And yes, this is one of the themes I'd eventually want to cover, too!

Mark

Yes I absolutely love doing Hans Zimmer covers (I love John Williams, too, but his themes are generally more difficult to recreate with 2 hands; you'd need a StageA organ with pedals to do most of them properly)

You can just do a selective quote rather than replicate the whole post if you wish.
It's easy - just highlight the text you want and choose 'quote selected text'. The selection below is from Mark's post.

Should you wish to follow-up my suggestion of isolating the percussion as an aid to learning, here's a quick guide.

There are a few free options for separating audio stems. I use Virtual DJ (VDJ) as I'm very familiar with how it works. Just drag the audio file onto one of the decks and select the Kick and Hi-hat [on the left] and you should be able to hear just the percussion. It's always a bit hit and miss as we don't know how the original recording was made, and VDJ is obviously not designed for orchestral pieces.

The timing and BPM of the audio track are shown underneath the title and to the right are the volume controls for vocal, instruments and beat. The waveform for the Kick and Hi-hat is shown at the top and I've circled a timpani roll for example.
It might take you a bit further.

Another alternative would be to look for a MIDI file and then just "borrow" the percussion.

Not heard of this guy Ashton Gleckman, before. He is a full-time composer and filmmaker from Indiana. Gosh, his MIDI programming skills and choice of sound libraries is incredible.  When asked which sound libraries he uses he states:  "It's 8dio electric cello for all the electric cello, strikeforce, HZP, and damage 2 for all the perc, Berlin winds for winds, ark 1, Berlin brass, and cinebrass for all the brass, and [the] a mix of SF and OT for all the strings. CS2, ark3, and fluidshorts for the string shorts. "

Been listening through headphones to some of his other Hans Zimmer work on YouTube. Truly inspirational and something to aspire to. Thanks for the link.
