How to set up a MIDI controller to handle left hand

OK, I give up.
I need help.
I've wasted hours going through the owner's and referance manuals and cannot seem to find the right set-up to allow me to play left hand parts - specifically acompanyments, on a MIDI controller. The M-Audio Keystation 49ES.
From all I can tell there's nothing unusual about the controller but nothing I've tried will force the 920 to recognise it. All I get is the same "uncompatable device" message no matter what peramaters I put in.
Any insights would be appreciated.

Might be helpful to describe what cable you are using to connect them, and which physical ports on both devices, plus describe on which sx920 screen you get the incompatible device message. (I'm guessing at startup).

Edit - the M-Audio Keystation 49ES is bus-powered, designed to be attached to a laptop or similar, so if its only connected to the sx920 I doubt the sx920 supplies power through its physical ports.

If everything fails, read manual (SX920):

"Compatible USB devices
• USB flash drive
• USB display adaptor
• USB wireless LAN adaptor

Other USB devices such as a computer keyboard or mouse cannot be used."

It does for sure, powering USB thumbs and other compatible devices. I'm pretty sure 49ES is properly powered from SX but SX is not able to work as SW master "host" for any USB-MIDI keyboard.

Use another MIDI keyboard with DIN-5 classic MIDI connectors (may be it can even be powered form SX USB).
