Expansion Manager Files ppi and pqi - what's the difference?

I've exported the same 4 packs, once as *.ppi and again as *.pqi

The *.ppi is 227 MB, the *.pqi is 9.89 MB... big difference, so I'm wondering what each extension means and how they are best used.

ps - I just found this post, it might help me
https://forum.psrtutorial.com/index.php/topic,57888.msg448997.html#msg448997

I read the post, from what it explains the PQI is the contents of the 4 packs I selected, the PPI is the update file which shouldn't have any additional content (to add or remove) as I didn't make any changes to my selection. Am I thinking right?

...also is C (cpi, cqi) for Contents and P (ppi, pqi) for Packs, but otherwise they are the same content?

OK I installed the 4 packs. Now I'm going through them and there are some I really like, others not so much. It's going to take a while though.

When/if I decide I don't want to keep something, do I just delete it? If I do, do I then have to export these files I want to keep so I can put them in again when I install more files to try? Is that how it works?
Or... do I tick/untick them in the YEM program for the next time I install a pack?

If I decide I want to keep something must it stay in Expansion? If it's a flute (as example) can it be relocated in a way it will be presented with other flutes in Woodwind or in a User/USB folder I might call Woodwind?

It seems to me by the time I've gone through the 4 packs (and I have more!) I will have various files in many separate places which seems pretty confusing.

pqi *only* installs the difference; so if you installed 4 packs on your sx720, then wanted to keep the same 4 but install a 5th, you'd use a pqi for that purpose. ppi installs everything (which is also necessary everytime you remove a package; there is no delete, unfortunately, as the samples need to be contiguous/ non fragmented)

Cpi is enCoded (ie encrypted) but as long as it's for your keyboard, you wont' notice any difference in usage (except that you can't import data from an encrypted pack into your own custom pack)

Thanks Mark, you wouldn't believe how confused this YEM stuff has me (or maybe you would!)
I see what you mean, I think.

Let's say I've done my trial run with these 4 packs and I know what I want from them, if I tick those in YEM to prepare a custom pack, does it automatically put the files needed for it for it in the pack? If I tick a Registration will it bring the styles or voices etc needed for that, if I pick a Style will it bring voices, pads etc? Or is that something I need to sort myself?

When my files are selected I can make a ppi pack, install that letting it do a format, and from then on I'd do any further updates with a pqi file so not to lose files from the first install.
If this is correct, that would seem to make auditioning on the keyboard difficult, is there a method that works?

Maybe?  ;D

You can literally check and uncheck everything needed within the pack, you don't even need to install the entire pack; as far as CPI is concerned there's no difference. The difference I was referring to was if you wanted to make your own pack by importing; but if you're only trying a few packs out there's no reason to do that, just check/uncheck what you like. Just remember, the first time *has* to be cpi /ppf. And you can't use quick install if you're removing anything.

Cheers,

 ???

No, I am back to confusion.

Having gone through the installation of the 4 packs, I decided which files I want to keep. In YEM I ticked all of those files in the 4 packs. I saved a ppi to do a format and install of the packs with just the content I want. Perfect.

I want to try new packs and I have too many to do them all at once. I can do a PQI to add these but then with no delete how do I manage to keep only what I want from these new packs?

Do I have to keep re-installing those first files, along with the next lot of edited files (and repeat this until I've gone through all my packs)? I thought I read somewhere if you do this sort of thing there is a chance of upsetting the file address so possibly messing up registrations using the files.

Hang on!! - If I edit the 2nd 4 Pack (as I'll call it) in YEM ticking what I want, and do a PQI does that update the auditioned packs so removing the files I don't want? Is this how it works... could this be my breakthrough?? (I hope so!)

OK so, another day. I installed my edited 4 packs yesterday with the sounds and styles I liked. Today when I start playing a style from Expansion there is no Right1 voice. This tells me the YEM program doesn't bring what's needed when selecting for installing, that I need to do this myself. That's not good.

Yes, unfortunately YEM doesn't tell you which voices are used in which styles; you have to either manually check when the styles are installed (which is what i do, check every voice, ots and then check *on* voices in the pack) or use Y Style Revoice. Most of the time though, nearly all the voices in a pack are used, but quite often you can find a preset substitute and remap and save your version of that style

I've used Y-Style Revoice so will check that out for the packs, see how that goes. Thanks.
I'm making progress  8)
