Voice layering

When using Voice PART ON/OFF buttons I'm not sure I understand the layering function properly. When MAIN and LAYER are both selected, the DGX is playing those two instrument at the same time. As an example: if MAIN is set to CFX Grand and LAYER is set to StringsPad and I play middle C. I will hear middle C for both instruments? Is that correct?

That's correct. And you can alter the presence of each. And bear in mind that some layered voices are also already included in presets... like piano and strings. In those cases you cannot change the presence of each individual voice, but as they have been set up by the pros, they are usually about right.
