Tiltable screen

Today I stumbled upon this video showcasing tiltable screen on the SX900. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUihnDMSdHQ

Does any member have any idea on how it's done, as it's a good addition not having screen that's reflective under bright light conditions.

Hi @TechDocTones,

In any case, this must be a (relatively complex) hardware modification, because you cannot connect an external touch display via USB.

Best regards,
Chris

I was also thinking the same, and I also noticed that the empty space was covered instead of it being hollow as one would expect...

I greatly miss the "Display Lift" on the Genos, as it was on the Tyros keyboards. I had hoped that Yamaha Corporation would incorporate these changes into the Genos 2, as they are essential for users with poor eyesight, not just for their aesthetic value, but for their practicality. Unfortunately, they did not implement these changes on the Genos 2, which is very disappointing.

@TechDocTones,
I agree with Chris. I wouldn't recommend making these modifications unless you have technical expertise, as incorrect connections can potentially damage your keyboard.

Best regards,
Alex

Thank you for your inputs Alex.

Even though I would pick a Yamaha over a Korg anytime, I appreciate small conveniences that Korg has designed into its keyboards to make it easier for its users, whether new or old. I simply am a fan of tiltable displays, but disappointed Yamaha hasn't implemented it even into its flagship models.

Anyway, fingers crossed, hoping Yamaha would do it someday...

@TechDocTones,

I also prefer Yamaha keyboards. For over 30 years, I have owned nearly every model of Yamaha keyboards and synths. While Korg and other brands have their unique characteristics, I have always appreciated the distinctive sound of Yamaha keyboards.

I hope Yamaha will consider adding a tilting display in their new flagship models, such as the Genos.

Best Regards,
Alex

Hi @TechDocTones,
hi Alex,

For me, the biggest weakness of the Genos1 is the relatively dark touch display, which is often difficult (or impossible) to read/operate during live performances. Even though I had Genos1, I still played almost all live performances with Tyros5, and Genos1 was only in the car as a backup. The Genos was only used when I needed two keyboards at a gig.

Completely different now with Genos2: I have "retired" Tyros5 and Genos1 (but I still have them). When I perform live, I now play with Genos2 and have a second Genos2 with me as a reserve. :)

In addition to many other advantages/improvements over Genos1, Genos2 now has a very good display that is very easy to read and operate even under live/stage conditions. It's much brighter and more contrasty and has a different, better tilt angle than the Genos1 display. I've never missed the fact that it doesn't have additional tiltability.

A tiltable display is always a relatively "wobbly" thing and is prone to problems in the long run. I'm glad that Yamaha chose this solution for Genos2 with the improved, but NOT tiltable display.

Best regards,
Chris

Agree with Chris. Tiltable screens have mechanical moving parts that can break. The screen of Genos2 is fine.

This is indeed why they were abandoned after Tyros (not to mention servicing the screen was an absolute nightmare.. you literally had to disassemble the entire board first), but the G1 screen could be made unreadable by overhead spot lights; I've tried every angle, and have yet to find any angle where I shine a light onto the G2 screen that makes it unreadable, which is a huge improvement. I agree with Chris, this is a more practical solution.

But there's still room to improve... e.g the touch screen could be more sensitive, and multi touch. And would it have killed them to include a brightness option?

Hi Mark,

We already have a "brightness option" on Genos2 (continuously adjustable for the Main display, as well as in several steps for the LED buttons and also several settings for the Sub display). It's in "Menu > Utility > Touch Screen/Display"). :)

Hello Chris,
I do agree with your point, they indeed are hard to maintain though, can't imagine what happens if, god forbid, it breaks or something :o .
Also great to hear the Genos2 display has a good viewing angle :)

I knew about the sub display brightness (very disappointing that it can't go any darker, it's definitely a downgrade from the oled sub menu screen on G1; like most I'll have to look at putting a tint on it) but how did I miss the main screen brightness! Also sad that they downgraded the hard drive and removed the digitial audio out.

*tries brightness out* Egads, that's *too* bright... I love it! That should definitely work the next time I'm outdoors on a stage! Thanks Chris,

lol-ing at myself for not even looking for a brightness menu. There wasn't one on G1 (except for turning up the brightness of the buttons) so I'd foolishly assumed there wasn't on G2 as well, because I didn't immediately see it

I must be getting old...
