Duplicate MIDI files, any favourite programs to seek and destroy these?

I will be facing into a rather large mess collection of midi files wanting to put them in some sort of order and wonder if anyone has favourite programs to identify midi duplicates? I'm on Windows.

Any suggestions to look at?

I'm using Peter Wierzba's Midi Database, just wondering if there's another program that can find midi duplicates. There are times the folder structure doesn't suit the database well for duplicates and, rather than moving folders, if there's an alternate there are times it would be useful.

p.s. yes I did consider just deleting them all... no, that's not going to happen 😁😂

In all the searches I've done for duplicates software I never did see this one mentioned, it looks interesting. I'm going to try it, give it a test. Thanks 👍

You don't know of a program that will find any folder(s) that contain only one specific file, and no other? The DB duplicate feature has left me with (probably) hundreds of folders empty except for the DB file, obviously I didn't use it correctly. I might need to write something to get rid of them though.

Update - AntiTwin is a great program, passed all tests and the options are really useful. Thanks Klaus, it will really help a lot.

Hi Mary

I have a bunch of styles with the same issue sitting on my Tyros Hard Drive ,.. the names are the same as most in my preset styles so I figured ..prefect I can delete them but amazingly when I play some the intros and endings on HD1 are different to my preset ones. I have a spare drive on my computer so any suspect ones are 'backed up" on my "E-Drive" on the computer. Also when I get midi or styles from other places I will often see there are two versions on the collection ..same file name but slightly different and knowing me I will always delete the one that I "thought" sounded better when in fact I should had kept the other one!!!

Yeah, my styles will need attention too Chris. I haven't tested the program with styles yet, but I probably will once I get the bulk of the midi files sorted out. But I will keep the better and the worse, just get rid of duplicates 😂

The Midi & Style Database will do the job well, have you tried it for your styles? It's a nice program, I just found it hard to manage for my midi duplicates when the folder structure didn't suit the way the database works. AntiTwin doesn't need a specific folder structure, and that is suiting me for this particular mess collection.

I tested Anti-Twin with midi files I simply duplicated and renamed and it found them 100% either in the same or in different folders.
I also tested with midi files I duplicated, renamed and changed various parts of some (instruments, effects etc) and again it found them 100%. (it did not identify files I changed parts of as duplicates)

It will move the found duplicates rather than delete them, and that safety valve is reassuring.

Let the deleting begin  8)
