Transfering file between models.

I have a favourite style on my DGX620 that I would love to use on my Tyros 1. Is it possible to transfer this style across, please?

More than likely a style file from a 620 could easily be in SFF2 format so if it doesn't play in your Tyros then you need to convert it to an SFF1 format!  Jorgen has a simple software program that will convert SFF2 styles to SFF1 format ..His software page is :  Guets are not allowed to view links. The DGX620 came out in 2006 (according to wikipedia) and the SFF2 styles first appeared in 2008 in the Tyros 3 keyboard. So, those 620 styles would be SFF1 format and will work in your Tyros keyboard.

I am not familiar with the DGX series but the DGX620 owner manual says you can transfer styles. See page 28 sub 2 in the owner manual. Same goes for the T1

The issue is actually getting the styles out of the DGX; the DGX's prior to the 670 use an older OS, you can't just copy and paste. And as I no longer have a 620 at the store (and haven't for 15 years) I can't see anymore if there's a way to export the file as a .sty. But the OS of the DGX620 was much more like a PSRe373, nothing like the PSRs/sx series OS's most of us here are used to. I don't recall there being an edit styles function on the 620; you *could* download styles into it (that were available from Guets are not allowed to view links. In order to access the links, please Register or Login).

The transfer function you mention, Peter, is for transferring midi files.

However, all is not lost; you *could* create a midi song with the desired built in style, making sure to use bars from all variations (intro,ending,main a, main b, fill in) and then take that midi song and plug it into style2midi (Jorgen) or styleToMidi (Yamaha) and should get a reasonable facsimile of the original style

Sounds like you need to tell us the NAME of the style you liked that is on the DGX620 keyboard. That style might also have been on the Tyros 2 or the PSR-S900 keyboard. You could use that version of the style in your keyboard.

Even if you don't have the actual style name can you match it to a particular song maybe?  That way we could offer up something pretty close to want you want on the T2 .. Charley put up a huge SFF1 collection of song styles a while back here (which I still have) so there is a good chance it will be amongst the 2400 styles in his pack.

You can use all PSR-3000 styles for your Tyros1.

you can find zip files with styles of the "Pianist" category in Onacimus' style collections. These files include some arpeggio styles. Just search for the word "pianist".

Just for interest if you try and use Yamaha's Midi to Style software you really need a voice list file for your actual keyboard and Yamaha only provide voice file for the SX series, Genos and A5000 so creation a text based voice list would be quite a daunting task ... Jorgen's software on the other hand does allow you to choose your model so you don't end up with generic default voices.

3 of the styles came from the 3000 keyboard which will work for you. The other 3 are from a newer keyboard and may not work as well for you.

I finally received the stiffy/USB drive to allow me to copy the "arpeggio" files to my keyboard. I am getting the following message "Data has not been loaded properly" Does this mean that they are not compatible with my Tyros 1?

Hi Bob,

The three style with a "space" character before the number (Arpeggio 1, Arpeggio 2, Arpeggio 3) are in SFF2 (= SFF GE) format, i.e. these are NOT compatible with Tyros1 (that can only read SFF1 styles).

Please try the other three styles (Arpeggio1, Arpeggio2, Arpeggio3). These are in SSF1 format and should work on Tyros1.

By the way, I listened to these Arpeggio styles briefly on my computer: Obviously the first three, the SFF2 Styles, are almost identical to the respective SFF1 Style anyway.

Just for the record Chris and Bob,

I have a friend with a PSR-S900 which also cannot read SFF2 styles so I just use Jorgen's SFF2 to SFF1's convertor which does both batch and single jobs and voila all your SFF2 styles are now readable on earlier arrangers!

Hi Bob,

I usually only use the free "vanBasco" Player to listen to styles on the computer (Windows PC). This is actually a player for MIDI files, but you can also load Styles (e.g. using "Open with ..." in the File Explorer). Unfortunately, the manufacturer's site has not been online since April 2024, but you can still find the Vanbasco Player (version 2.53) when searching on the Internet.

As MIDI tone generation on the PC (if no keyboard is connected via USB) I use the software-synth "CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth" (Guets are not allowed to view links. In order to access the links, please Register or Login) together with a free Soundfont like "Timbres of Heaven" (there is also on the site mentioned).

When playing "as MIDI file", a Style of course does not sound like the keyboard played. You cannot change chords, i.e. you can hear everything as the style was programmed (mostly in the C Major7 chord). But for a fundamental assessment of styles, this is enough for me.

Another option would be the use of the PC (Windows) Program "JJazzLab" (Guets are not allowed to view links. In order to access the links, please Register or Login). This is actually a program for creating backing tracks with the help of styles, but of course you can "only" use it to listen to styles on the PC. It should be noted that styles are referred to here as "rhythms".

With VanBasco ..I can get a midi to play from the playlist but cannot load an sty file ..Do you still use the playlist cos when I go to a folder with style files it's blank!!

Disregard the above ..yeah it works fine just need to right click and open with the app.  No issue now ..Are there any tweaks apart from installing the Virtual MiniSynth and the  Timbres of Heaven ... do you need to set anything in setup at all

With my download of the TOH sound font I also was given a patches files (much like a voice list?) How do I apply those voices to the sound font ... ?? There doesn't seem to be any "edit" button on the forum now so you cannot even correct spelling mistakes unless you do it within a few minutes of posting then it vanishes so sorry for the 3 posts!!

This should work as follows:

- Download and install the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver V3.1.4 on your PC. (For current Windows 10 / 11 PCs use the 64-bit version of the USB-MIDI Driver.)

Note that the instrument must be connected to the computer (via a USB type AB cable) BEFORE starting the USB-MIDI Driver installation.


- Download the "Tyros1 OS Upgrade V1.40 via USB":

Unzip the downloaded zip file on your computer and follow the instructions of the included ReadMe.txt and Installation_OS_Upgrade_USB.pdf files.

Hi Chris,

Regarding vanBasco Player: I don't work with the Playlist function integrated there. The vanBasco Player normally registers itself automatically as the Standard player for the file extensions .mid, .midi, .kar and .rmi during installation. .mid and .kar are important here. You can check in the vanBasco settings (click on the eighth note symbol or right-click the main window). By double-clicking on a .mid or .kar file in Windows Explorer, vanBasco should then open automatically.

If the VirtualMIDISynth is not yet active, it will take a moment when you first click on the Play button (or press the space bar) until the VirtualMIDISynth is loaded. You do NOT need the "patch files" you mentioned that you got with the "Timbres Of Heaven" sound font. The VirtualMIDISynth (in conjunction with an installed sound font) only replaces (within certain limits) the MIDI sound generation of the keyboard.

It is ideal if the keyboard is connected to the PC via a USB cable, the Yamaha USB-MIDI driver is installed on the PC, and you select "Digital Workstation 1" (or "Digital Keyboard 1") as the MIDI Output device in vanBasco. This will control the SONG parts of the keyboard. (One of the preset MIDI templates "All Parts" or "KBD & Style" should be set on the keyboard.)

I still run it not connected to the keyboard and it sounds OK even on the small speakers I have on my computer ..works fine to check out midis!!!
