Using pitch correction with the SX900

I have a Yamaha SX900. I have a dynamic mic that I connect to the 1/4" TS mic jack on the back of the keyboard for outputting vocals through the keyboard's speakers. It works well for my solo purposes. I also have a TC-Helicon Mic Mechanic 2 foot pedal, which I have tried to connect between the mic and the keyboard's mic jack to utilize the Mic Mechanics pitch correction capabilities. When I do this, I get a humming noise from the keyboard. Is there anything I can do to eliminate this noise?

Have you tried the pitch correct mode of the SX900 (Ref manual p98)? If you save the different vocal adjustments of each song to a reg memory, you can modify the vocal for each song.  As the gnd loop goes, that device uses a TRS I/O which may cause a problem with the output to a TS input on the SX. I'd contact the TCH company to see if a TS-TRS connector would help.

Are you connecting in using minipin stereo (aux in) via the L&R outs from the TC Helicon? If so, no, that hum will always be there. But if you're connecting from L from TC Helicon into the line input (not aux, the mic/line... make sure you switch to line first!!) then that should get rid of it. Yes it's in mono (but so is your mic) but it should work without hum that way, barring an electrical hum issue.

Thanks for your response, Gene. I wondered about that pitch correction mode on the harmony settings. It could be a beneficial function. I wonder if there is any way to use that pitch correction feature when you are not using harmonies? I will follow up with TCH on the cable suggestion. It sure would be nice if a TS-TRS connector could solve the issue!

There is a ¼" TS Mic/Guitar (with switch) jack on the keyboard to which you can directly connect your dynamic mic. My dynamic mic is connected to the TC-Helicon Mic Mechanic with an XLR cable and then outputs from the Mic Mechanic with an XLR to TRS cable into the keyboard's mic jack.

Wait, you're going XLR out (is it line or mic level?) into TRS? The sx900 plug isn't actually compatible with TRS in, only TS. Causes all sorts of issues if you try plugging in TRS into the mic/line input jack. That's the first thing I'd try; I thought the mic mechanic might also have 1/4" line outs, which would be better (if it's sending mic out, the voltage is much, much lower than line level... about 25,000 times lower) which introduces a lot of noise with a powered unit. Much better if you're sending line out from the TCH (if possible)

Yes, if that's the case (that  there's only mic level out, which would be unusual for a mic fx pedal) you're better off programming the built in harmony on the sx900, yup!

Mark, I rechecked and the line going out from the TCH Mic Mechanic 2 is XLR to TS at the keyboard end (not TRS, as I had previously mentioned). The Mic Mechanic has no ¼" connections.

Hello,

Just a quick note, make sure you use Micro cables and not PA cables ... they're not the same!
Your box produces a 24v power supply, it is strongly recommended to connect any dynamic Micro on the keyboard Off with all gains at minimum, it analyzes the voltage connections on power up and adjusts itself ... seen on another forum .
