Hello. I am trying to understand how file search behaves on my SX700. I would think that it should be a basic software file function but does not appear to be that way. Let me explain my scenarios and search results.

To set the stage, I have my user area, USB1 and Expansion which contains a myriad of styles, Registrations, pads, voices, etc.

  1. When create a new Registration I save it in a folder on my USB1 along with the same folder name in the
keyboard USER memory(they are mirrored). When I search for it, I get zero results. It takes a very long
time before the search finds it. Sometimes days, or even weeks. There are times when the keyboard is
on for hours day after day and the search still can come up with zero results.  Then out of the blue like
magic it appears with the 2 entries(one in user and one in the USB1). Once they appear then they always
appear as normal from that point on. It does the same for any new style as well and it does not matter if
I put the entry in a folder or not. Why is this happening.

  2. This one is even harder to understand what is going on. I was going through my Expansion pack
"Latin-EU_S770 , Registraion Italian 1" , on Bank 8 there are accordion voices that I wanted to see
what they were. Don't know how I got a list of voices but they contained ItalianAccordion 1,
ItalianAccordian 2 and ItalianAccordian 3. What beautify voices. I should have done a save when I had
them but I hit the back arrow to try and find where they were located. Well I have spent hours and hours
searching for them using full name, partial name, even the numeric 1,2,3 and they are nowhere to be
found.  I did back track all my steps with no success to get them to reappear. Why would they show up
and then disappear(there was no delete activity performed at any time). Again I have no idea how I got
them to appear in the first place, but they did play for me without a problem.

The software level that I have is Version 1.11  and my USER capacity is 1gb with 734mb available if that matters.

               Regards,       dom

Problem is probably in MYRIAD of doubled styles, registrations and others, which should be searched through with non NASA computer, but a relatively slow computer in keyboard. Try to pull out the USB stick at first, then search this forum. This problem was discussed here some time ago.

Hi Dom

I have the same keyboard.

I Only keep styles, registrations etc on my usb stick.
I keep Copies of that usb stick on my Windows 10 computer. That way, if the file is corrupted or the stick goes faulty... can happen as I'm sure you know then I format a new stick and retrieve the copy from my PC
I back up the usb DAILY, peace of mind for 5 minutes work.
I don't use the user drive to store what I already have on the USB.... Why would I? Why store it twice on the same keyboard. Either store it on the USB, or store it on the drive.
I think your poor SX700 is struggling with too much duplicated data being stored on it, and it simply can't cope.

I would ensure that you have all your files up to date on your usb, a backup on your pc, and then do a factory reset to clear all the bloat in your user area

Your keyboard is confused by the same stuff in 2 locations.

As to your 2nd query.

I can't see any expansion pack for Latin EU S770 in the currently available packs.
https://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/contents/keyboards/vse/index.html

I just had a quick look, and I can see various Latin, EU and other packs, but those Italian Accordian files aren't listed in the contents

It's probable that the pack you are referring to simply isn't designed to work on the SX700.

   Hi Keith.

Being a retired MF storage specialist for 46 years has embedded Backup/Redundancy/Recovery in my brain and it is second nature for me to backup up everything.  In fact I clone 4 USB sticks and when I change the LIVE USB1 on the keyboard, I fire up the others one at a time and copy any thing that was added/changed to the others. Crazy, maybe. But the beauty is that I can grab any one of these sticks and put them into my keyboard or any other keyboard(done that already) and they "work" fine.

The copies on the computer when I tested them by putting them on a stick and tried to use them did "not" work for me. They behave the same way as moving things around like registrations from one folder to another or renaming a folder, the path to the necessary registration components are lost. Unless the Registration is using ONLY what is loaded on the keyboard, then they work fine.

To your point of perhaps keeping them taking them off the "USER" memory, now that I think about does make sense because if I don't load any of my USBs and try to use the ones in memory for example a Registration needs resources from a source other than what is loaded on the keyboard, the Registrations will not work. When I fire up the same Registration with any one of my USB sticks everything works fine.

My searches however are done with one or even all of my stick loaded(favor of the moment) at times, so when I sync my sticks I may have them all connected, USB1,2,3 & 4. While in this state if I search something that has shown up in the past as I stated previously, they will always be found with no problem. Yes it may take the search a little long but they do come up and work.

I have a previous post where Chris made recommendations on my setup with multiple USBs loaded at the same time, so I kind of understand what I can be up against in that first search scenario but been running okay till now.  Note that once in a while the search request can pop up a window with the word "Checking" in it when things take a little longer than they should, but at the end I get my results.

As for the Expansion Pack, I got that free from the Yamaha website late last year and only starting to paly with my Packs now.  Not sure if the S770 in the name has something to do with my second behavior perhaps meaning that the pack is designed for the S770 and using it on the SX700 may not work as expected and I just have to accept what works for it and what does not?

However, I would still need to understand fully why it takes so long for the keyboard to recognize new entries on the USB. It must have some odd save/search algorithm.

Thanks for your feedback, but I am curious about your backup strategy. If you were to get a new stick and only put some of your Windows backed up files on it and then tried to play say a registration if it would work, keeping in mind that you pick one that does not required ONLY the resources that are loaded on you keyboard.  Meaning, that a style in that registration resides in a folder that is/was on your USB at the time the registration was created. In my case I have over 25,000 styles and of course they are not on the keyboard so I have to depend on my folders on my USB sticks.   Give it a try and let me know.

PS:  FYI. https://www.psrtutorial.com/forum/index.php/topic,60280.msg464350.html#msg464350
I have read this and with my fully loaded USBs, regardless of what I have on them, my search
for old existing files is fine as mentioned above where it can take some time to find or go into
checking mode with the pop up window but it gives results within less than 3 minutes"  .  It's only
the new stuff that takes it's time to appear.
Note:
I also forgot to mention that this issues pertains ONLY to new stuff in folders. If I save outside folders I have no issue with the search. It finds the file within 1-2 minutes. My USB sticks contain 21gb of data on them.  I did a test with a USB containing many duplicate files pushing it to 45gb on a 64gb USB and still had no issues with the search of old existing files. So my final conclusion and observation on how much is loaded on a stick is that size does not hurt me, yes as Chris mentioned in the attached post, the keyboard is overwhelmed, but it does work over tme very well if you are patient with it and know what to expect.

      Best regards.

Hi Keith.

BTW I saw the expansion pack list from your link but here is what I have and what is loaded on my keyboard.
Not sure why it is not listed in your link under Voices and Styles?
