Genos 2 New Added Styles ?

Do we have a list of just the new styles on Genos 2 not on Genos (1) ?

Simone1972

Graham,
this list is probably accurate.
What is driving me crazy is that Yamaha is still renaming old styles and present them as new !! >:(
One example is "80sLoveBallad" that was already part of the CVP 809 preset styles as "Careless Pop"... but I'm sure there are much more.
I'm literally pissed off by this bad habit, just for non-value-added marketing purpose.

Here is the list (excel sheet) of all the styles in the genos 2 with an "N" beside all the styles with new names.
As the previous responder said there are lots of styles with new names that are just the same old style with a new name - not really a new style.
If anyone is able to eliminate all of these that would be really helpful.
The styles with a "2" are styles from the upgrade  (version 2) of the Genos one keyboard styles.

Hope this helps.

Excellent job, Mark!

I had downloaded all Preset Styles on my Genos1, and started to adjust each "new" Style (Genos2 styles not existing on Genos1) to be played decently on Genos1.

It is a long work, as whoever is familiar with Styles editing  may know that. I plan to make the results available to the Forum members when I'll complete this job.

During this skill I was working on Styles with new names. BUT in a few cases after a long work I discovered that some Styles  had just changed names, but were basically same Styles as in Genos1.... as you pointed out.

Therefore your Excel file (a long work also that you fave done) will be very beneficial for avoiding to duplicate files already existing in Genos1.

Thank you so much!

I must notice that (real) new Styles have been made with (IMHO) better musical taste, comparing to Styles in Genos1.
A negative point (IMHO) is that the OTS are generally very modest if you consider the huge availability of Voices and Effects both on Genos1 and Genos2. Same situation I had noticed also on Genos 1.

Looks like I missed converting the "WesternWaltz" in the country section.

The Up-tempoCountryShuffle in this list, is the same style as the UptempoCountryShuffle from the CVP809 keyboard.

I am working on converting 25 styles in the "Oldies" that I thought were new. This list has only 18 noted as new.

Thanks for these lists. It makes things easier to double check stuff.

Interesting thread. Thanks for the efforts!

Observation
I've listened to several demos of the G2 and while the sounds have improved in some areas, the styles still seem to be four bars long and as repetitive. Even after listening to Peter Baartmans, I still sense a "cheesyness" to the styles. His demos are always good but I sensed a lack of enthusiasm in his recent efforts. It's like the styles use the same formula, with some modest enhancements. I was looking forward to styles that employ a little more AI in their making, just like a real drummer or accompaniment player does. This "round robin" architecture has been around for a long time and yet, Yamaha drags their feet in using it. Styles are the pulse of an arranger. As good as these styles are, they are still very predictable and boring after a while. It seems there's been no progress in this area.

Now that Canada is getting some G2 in stock, I'll likely demo one and find out what my trade is worth :D.
"Learn" your music correctly, then "practice" it. Don't practice mistakes because you'll learn them.

Quick update After 1 hour spent on Genos2 at the store.
Fake new styles:
Epic Drama Ballad
Movie Mystery
70s disco dance
70s discoteque
70s swedish 8beat
80s swedish pop ballad
Groove Camp
10s 8beat rock
90s hard rock ballad

I've mostly dig into the pop/rock genres only....
I already commented on the post above.

After converting 28 G2 styles to G1, that's enough for me!  :)  :'(

While browsing the SX900 styles, I noticed that some of the "new" styles may have been adapted from SX900. I'm thinking of R&B SlowBallad, MinimalElectro, NatureHipHop, RetroSoul, maybe others. Did I do duplicate work?

Even so, the styles with these names had REVelation reverb and Multiband Comp effects, Ambi drum kits and new to G2 voices in the OTS. Yamaha clearly does some updating even if the style name remains the same.

Not really a complaint because us beggars can't be choosers.  ;)  One can definitely go bonkers trying to track the history of styles, tho'...

Best of luck to everyone -- pj

There are also some styles from the CVP809 as well as some from the superior pack.

When I read all this again I sometimes wonder if 'style hunting' has perhaps become some kind of addiction.  'Having' has a much higher purpose than actually 'using'.  There are several thousand styles in circulation: who has such a large song repertoire to justify that number?  I admit that I have had that 'obsession' too  ;D.  But I've been kicking the habit for a few years now because I don't see the point in it.  Every now and then you can still search for a style for a song that you want to add to your repertoire.  It is even better to try to put it together yourself (easy via assembly) and it is even more fun. Jm2c ;)
My best regards,
Ton

We are all "Great Believers", maybe one day if we are lucky and work hard at it, we will find something that is NEW & USEFUL.
It's a trait that is Unigue to Yamaha Followers.
We all live in hope.   :D :D

I have converted several packs and I have only found 2 styles that I might be able to use to create a custom song. Both of those songs were from back in the 70s. I currently am looking for songs that are 80s and newer.

I'll be using these G2 styles to use for their parts to create custom song styles when mixed with other older styles.

I did find one style that might work for "Jessie's Girl" from 1981. It's not country but a favorite of my sister in law. It will take a lot of work but the main rhythm pattern is there in the style.

It is hard for me to notice the "fake new styles" as I very seldom use the preset styles as is. So thanks for the list. I can only weed them out by "name".

EileenL

I do believe that some just collect styles for the sake of it. You never hear them being used in any songs played. I like many have down loaded some to try and found them quite unusable. I personally would never post a style if it did not work properly. It is surprising how much time you waste trying to find a good one.
Eileen

DrakeM

Oh, I believe there is no bad style but rather gems waiting to be enhanced and/or finished.

I have all of Maximan's styles tucked away. None of them have I used as is, but several I have taken and added MAINs to them and finished them into great styles, like "Chain, of Fools" and "Ain't No Sunshine (When She's Gone)".

Then there are the KorgPA3 converted styles. I use parts from their PHR1 and PHR2 in many of my country styles. I have even examined them to learn how to make my own patterns.

I think the new Yamaha Midi to Style program is going to unleash even more possibilities for style creations. I am just all tied up with my gigs and converting some of these G2 styles for everyone right now. I'll get to figuring out the program pretty soon.

Thanks, Eileen. I recognize a few from the CSP series, too. All spiffed up for G2.

Oh, I believe there is no bad style but rather gems waiting to be enhanced and/or finished.

Here, here. I enjoy the process and learning aspect of style conversion. I get to study Yamaha's work and expertise in detail, then apply that knowledge elsewhere.

In this case, it gives me a chance to taste G2 even tho' the target is G1. Unless I drive to Canada and visit Mark, it's going to be a while until I actually experience G2 in person.  :o

Plus, it's a kick to see people download converted styles and maybe use the stuff. Like letting your kids go -- "Write if you find work."  :)

Good on everyone -- pj

I posted a link to my converted R&B styles at:

https://sandsoftwaresound.net/genos2-rb-styles-converted-for-genos1/

Please let me know if you have trouble downloading the ZIP file. Either Wordpress or Chrome is giving me conniptions about file downloads and I haven't found the culprit, yet. Probably Chrome.

If all is good, I will post on a new thread so more people can try the styles. The page also has a link to my style conversion notes.

All the best -- pj

P.S. If one of the moderators want to post the styles on the PSR Tutorial Genos styles page, I'm good with that.

jimlaing

Thanks pjd ... I tried some of your converted R&B styles in my Genos1.  I also used the Playlist Excel file that someone posted, to determine which song(s) Yamaha had in mind for each song.  [although for the R&B category, I didn't know alot of the songs in Yamaha's playlist!]

Interesting - they worked fine in my G1 and sounded good / useful for sure ...
Thanks again,
