MIDI record/playback in DAW not working

Hi,

My goal is to record a performance as MIDI data in my DAW on PC (Reaper) and then playback on the G2.

G2 connected to PC over USB for MIDI in/out, works a charm.

No problem to capture and record the MIDI in DAW. But when I playback and send MIDI back to G2, the wrong sounds are used, the style is using all the wrong voices.

Have experimented with various MIDI templates on the G2, but without success. I would expect this to "just work" out of the box.

Please don't tell me to use the onboard MIDI sequencer, no, I want this in DAW for advanced editing.

There must be some setting or trick I am missing.

Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm a general midi user, so not much 'in dept' knowledge. But what I know: every new keyboard has often given new names to the various voices. Basically the DAW loads the GeneralMidi instruments that are most similar to it. That's why you need a 'patch script' that translates your transmitted MIDI data into the correct voices of your keyboard (the G2). I work with Cubase every now and then and there is already a patch script available for download for the G2 because Cubase is also from Yamaha. You import the patch script into your DAW. For Reaper you should look for a patch script for the Genos2 in the Reaper community.
Hope this helps? ;)
My best regards,
Ton

thanks for the help although I'm not convinced.
when I had my psr s900 i was able to record midi over usb to DAW and play back without any issues, and no strange patch scripts.
the keyboard should transmit and receive all the necessary patch change and sy*** messages needed to change sounds, variations registrations etc.
but strangely not working.  the g2 has 2 virtual midi ports over usb which doesn't help either.

HI,
Watch this video. I record on Cakewalk and then listen to Genos(1). I ensured this by using PORT 2 to play the recorded midi. I hope it helps.

thank you, I think this might be the solution.
however, was unable to test because I found the yamaha usb audio/midi driver to be very unstable, crashing my DAW and then failing to detect the connected keyboard.
only solved by restarting everything, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, only for it to happen again after a short time.

somewhat related topic, i also tested the audio over USB to record G2 in DAW, but quite useless feature because the levels are so hot that it clips, ruining the recording.

no way to adjust the USB audio level that I can find.  if anybody knows, thank you, but frustrating first experience of the USB interfaces.

yes, this indeed was the answer.
if anybody else is stuck and finds this thread.
the built-in MIDI templates do not work. You have to create your own, based on the first one.
configure the keyboard to transmit on PORT1 and receive on PORT2.
edit the transmit and receive parameters so that they correspond.

since setting my DAW to transmit on PORT2, the drivers have been stable.

I also found a workaround to the USB audio level issue. the volume dial does not affect USB audio level. you must go into the Master FX and create a compressor or EQ setting that lowers the overall output level of the G2.

hope this helps somebody else who is diving more into the technical details of the PC DAW integration.
