SX 900 Change or edit Intro Volume

In a style, is it possible to edit volume of channels pertaining to 'Intro' without affecting any change in the Main Variation? I am asking this question because whenever I change the volume of a Ch in 'Intro' the same change gets effected in Main variation.

Yes! You must use the Style Editor from the SX900.

hi Chax,
As you probably assume, in Intro (or Ending) you can change volume for each channels separately, the same way you do that for Main variations. In your case:

1. Select desired style and open Style Creator
2. In Basic tab select desired section (i.e. Intro1)
3. Press START/STOP button on panel so you can hear Intro1 playing
4. Press MIXER/EQ button on main panel and select Style tab on screen
   (keep in mind that you're still record mode inside Style Creator, so don't touch keys on keybed)
5. Adjust volume for each channel
6. When done, close Mixer/Eq by touching X on the top-right side of the screen -that will return you back to Style Creator
7. Save the style and close Style Creator.

If it is an on board Yamaha style you must save it with a new name in the user section, or it will just revert to Yamaha original settings.

My mistake. I have a Genos and do not have the button Mixer/EQ on the panel.

I tried with the Assignable to go to the Mixer, but that didn't work.
I need to go via the Menu1 -> Mixer from within the Style Creator.
I watched the video from ckobu, and so I did found the solution.

aaahh, interesting... I never noticed that on Genos.
Yeah... as you realized, the only important thing in that step is, that we don't exit Style Creator (we only temporary open Mixer while Style Creator is still open/active).

I noticed when I did that (change the volume of a channel), I immediately loose the dynamic volume + panning  on that channel. I'm guessing those are some sysx commands which get cleared once the user updates the volume of that channel manually?

How I overcome this is by using an insert compressor or using the compressor on the system dsp to control loudness/threshold.

Hi Kevin,

Yes, some styles are programmed very "tricky", so it could well be that the dynamic progressions (volume and/or pan) determined by manually changing the mixer settings are lost, especially if multiple CC #7 ( Channel Volume) events are used and not CC #11 (Expression).

Also note that a style file can contain data on up to 16 MIDI channels (which are routed to the output channels 9 - 16 via the CASM part of the style file). In the Style Creator on the keyboard, however, you only have access to these channels 9 - 16. In the case of complex styles, changing them directly on the keyboard will usually be a compromise.

With the PC (Windows) program "MixMaster" you can edit all MIDI channels in style files separately:

As mentioned before, why doesn't Yamaha (before releasing an high-end arranger) submit the styles to professional mastering people, who know studio recordings-----the ensemble balance, tonal issues, etc., so that the result is, more or less, "radio ready."
