Recording SX900 midi into a DAW

I have a midi question.

Will the sx900 transmit the individual midi channels of a style file into my DAW, (using an interface of course)
so I can revoice the tracks using instrument plugins?

Thanks,  Allen

Hi Allen
You can do it. You can record a MIDI song in the recorder in SX and transfer it to the DAW using a USB stick. And you can connect SX and DAW and record directly. Watch this video that explains the process.

Of course, you have to set up some things in your DAW to make everything work properly. Here is a video that explains that part.

Turn on English subtitles on the video.

Casper, I have one more question.(sorry for bothering you again)

Can the drum(percussion channel) be broken out into the separate components
so you can assign a drum vst such as easydrummer to play the separate midi drum component tracks as a new drum kit?

Thank you very much in advance,  Allen

It can. You don't have to separate the elements into separate strips. In channel 10, just add a VST instrument and you will get what you asked for. Watch this video.

Hi Allen,

If you use the standard MIDI template "All Parts" on the SX900, the Keyboard parts, Multi Pad parts and Style parts are transmitted via MIDI Port 1 (via DIN MIDI OUT of the SX900 or with USB-MIDI via "Digital Workstation"). Also see the attached screenshots.

By the way, there is no physical DIN MIDI OUT for MIDI Port 2 (on which the SONG parts are output by default) on PSR-S/SX models, and Port 2 cannot be sent via USB-MIDI anyway. Mixing up the MIDI Transmit ports is therefore impossible in the present case (MIDI recording of the Keybard, Muti Pad and Style parts).

The easiest way is to connect the USB-to-Host terminal of the SX900 to the computer, install the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver there (see SX900 Download page) and select "Digital Workstation" ( of the Yamaha USB-MIDI Driver) as the MIDI Input device in the DAW.

As a MIDI Output device in the DAW, select "Digital Workstation 1". This controls the SX900's SONG parts for playback.

Note: If for some reason you want to control the SX900's Keyboard, Multi Pad and Style parts from the DAW, you would have to select "Digital Workstation 2" (corresponds to Port 2 Receive) as the MIDI Output device in the DAW. It should also be noted that the Receive channels of the Keyboard parts (Right 1 -3, Left) are shifted by one channel. So you would either have to increase the Transmit channels of the tracks where the Keyboard part are recorded on the DAW by 1 or create a User MIDI template on the SX900 in which the Receive channels for Right 1 - 3 and Left are changed from Ch 2 - 5 to Ch 1 - 4.

If you have any further questions, just get in touch here again.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Chris

Thank you very much Chris,

Your directions are very clear, especially for a MIDI NOOB like me.
